Class of 2021 Parents

How's everything going with the kids? Mine started basketball again, JV team again- she tried out for Varsity- but 16 girls also did, and only 5 tried out for JV- so the Varsity coach asked all the sophomores to stay down and "help", my DD was ok with that as she will get lots of playing time. 1st report cards came out and she did really well also. She seems to definitely be maturing, talking about college and all. Ugh, she's growing up. :(

Soccer season has ended, ordered them both varsity jackets. Honor roll for ds, high honor roll for dd. Winter track started yesterday, both are playing club soccer (different clubs). Dd has a cold and only managed to get to her last class today, but will go to track after school and soccer tonight at 7:30 (both outdoors). Dd is back with her senior boyfriend, this better end before prom! Dd and ds have become pretty good friends finally!

Volleyball season (school) has ended and we are into basketball (she plays varsity for both). She starts club volleyball this week. Just completed our first two college visits over the Thanksgiving holiday o_O Not sure I'm ready for all that! We visited Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill (we are from Texas). She took the PSAT in October, so hopefully she will get scores in December and she will see how she will have to buckle down for Junior and Senior years.

Marching Band season ended a few weeks ago. We moved into parade season and winter guard season. DD has been in tech week all week for theater. Her first shows are this weekend. She was selected to be the dance choreographer and one of the fairies. They are doing "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Grades have been good all year.

Our marching band season just ended on Friday night, too, and jazz band and indoor percussion have started. It is a never-ending cycle!

School is going well - 10th grade it much better than 9th grade, IMO.

DS just finished up his first semester of school in Argentina and is now on 2.5-month summer break. School isn’t terribly hard or involved, so he has done well, having picked up on the language very quickly. He spent a weekend in Bariloche (ski resort town) this month for a conference with all the other exchange students. I told him he leads a very rough life! He plays on an indoor club soccer team and is loving that. He only made the practice squad because as he says, “Mom, these guys are REALLY good!” He says he is learning a lot by playing against them. His practices are held at 10:00 at night. That is also the time that dinner at anyone’s house starts, and he goes to dinners a lot! They party all night, and that is not limited to just weekends. “I nap a lot here.” He is loving life and I love hearing about his adventures!

We were recently trying to decide on cruise itineraries, with a choice of fall or spring break of next school year. We decided to book for fall break, to keep spring break of junior year open for college visits. Yeah, college visits.

We don't get report cards until Thursday--Hurricane Florence messed with the school, the kids missed 3 weeks! DD was given a "bye" on some work in her Honors Forensics Science class (online), but she chose to do it anyway, because she loves the class. That, and it was the only school work she could do during those three weeks.

Orchestra is done until Jan. Surprisingly, their concert was really good--they only had 5 rehearsals, so my expectations were low. But I think the kids who play in an optional orchestra are the dedicated ones, certainly at the HS level, so they all worked hard to make the music sound great.

DD finally, FINALLY! earned her pointe shoes--a minor miracle! It's funny, because to look at her, she has the perfect dancer's body, but she really has to work to even be average. I think it's good for her--a lot of stuff comes easily for her, and points shoes certainly didn't, but she persevered, and I was blessed with the privilege of paying $150 for shoes, inserts, elastics, and ribbon--and having to sew on the elastic and ribbon myself.

DD is giving some thought to college. She took the PACTs a few weeks back (required for all sophomores in this state), no scores yet. She's coming around to considering an in-state school. One of the big things is, she knows she wants to go to law school, and we've been pointing out that, if she saves money on undergrad, she can spend it on law school. She kind of has her heart set on Boston University, which is far away and expensive, but they do have a Law School, so it might be a good choice for that. Also, knowing her personality, I'm not sure that being super far from home is a good choice. Live on campus, sure, but Boston is 800 miles away--she couldn't come home for a weekend if she wanted to. we'll just have to see how things pan out.

I can't even think about these college visits, omg. lol We have an only child, and she does need to be more independent, so we have definitely stressed about her going away to college as well, BUT in state. LOL

I can’t evn think about college, one just graduated in May, dd17 has 3 more applications to submit, and ds20 graduates next year. They’ll start SAT/ACT tutoring at the end of the summer, I’ll start focusing then.

DD took her PSAT this year for the second try to get more familiar with the test and her ACT this year for the first try. Her hope is to go to University of Kansas. She wants to be a marching jayhawk so bad. Unfortunately for DD her parents aren't exactly rolling in dough so she will probably be in state and going to Missouri State or Southeast Missouri State.

Ah, the talk of college. My daughter took PSAT and another one here in IL that is a practice one for the ACT. And we have been discussing college ideas. She plans to go to the community college here in town the first two years and then transfer somewhere. Her older brother did the same thing and it really was a HUGE savings! Plus, every single class he took transferred and he has his Associates degree now. He is a senior and will be staring his final term in January. My DD plans to go into computer technology with a second major in Spanish. She is currently taking Spanish 3 as a Sophomore and loves it. She has a natural knack for it too.

She recently finished marching band season. Concert band will continue until the end of the school year. The band did an amazing job this year with three first place finishes and one second place finish in the competitions. One of the first place finish was for their class at the Bands of America sectionals in St. Louis. It was the band's first time at the competition. WOW! ALL the bands were AMAZING! I just sat and watched band after band, thinking about all the long hours, dedication of all these wonderful young adults!

Lol Dd has Spanish 4, gets A’s but relies on the kindness of her classmates, who are all pretty fluent - thank goodness for group work! Ds is in 3 and would be failing 4 (Dd had the good 8th grade Spanish 2 teacher, ds had the bad one, no one in that class tested into Spanish 3 as freshmen). My niece did marching band all throughout HS in Indiana, so time consuming! My kids play sports, so that was out, but you can see the band kids have such a bond.

That's awesome! Our show wasn't quite as good as last year (we had a lot of seniors who graduated and lots of incoming freshmen), so they're a "young" marching band right now. But now we'll have indoor winter drumline coming up, jazz band, and concert band is year-round.

My DS took the PSAT (I think this was his third time -- and the last time before it really counts). They were supposed to take the practice ACT at the end of October (which is a real test but from a previous year -- so, you have an idea of what to expect and how you might score), but because of state standards that changed, the sophomores had to take something else. He took the practice ACT last year in the fall and spring, and he will get to take it again this spring, but it would've been nice to have that practice again a couple of months ago.

He's getting good grades but isn't a fan of AP European History. Such a shame since he was really looking forward to that class. He likes it less than AP Human Geography that he had last year, but I think it's because of the teacher. They can make or break a class for you sometimes. On the other hand, he is really liking AP Chemistry and I attribute that to the teacher.

He's eligible to get his driver's license in February... crazy.

College... he used to say he wanted to go to school in the northeast (we're in TN), but I think he's finally come around to the idea of staying in the south. We have 2 years of free community college here which is such an awesome thing, but I don't see him doing that. I'm thinking he'll wind up going to school in TN, AL or FL.

How's everyone's sophomore coming along? We are almost at the end of basketball season, DD's team is undefeated so far(last year they won counties- which is the highest JV competes here), so hoping for B2B championships. Grades are great, she's getting used to her GT classes(mostly A's and 1 B), and we signed up for next years classes already, with taking English at the community college across the street. She can get her license next month(you have to be 16 and 6 months to get it) OMG

My DD is doing fine. Second semester just started--it was late due to the hurricane, they missed three weeks of school. She took her Pre-ACTs in Oct. and scored a 28--I have no idea if that's good or bad, but she hadn't yet started Algebra 2 or Chemistry, so I figure it can only go up from here. This is my first experience with ACTs instead of SATs.

DD needs to take a test to get her learner's permit here--we hadn't looked into it, she had a lot on her plate. But maybe now that she has a study hall instead of her online class, she'll have more spare time.

As for college--we're encouraging her to look within a 4-hour radius of home. She hasn't demonstrated the independence I'd like, to go farther away. Naturally, she wants to go to Boston University, a mere 800 miles north.

Winter track is coming to an end, dd’s coach voted her county athlete of the month, so she got a newspaper article. She qualified for groups at sections in 2 events, ran in 3 but got sick in the 400 and missed by 2. Ds made sectionals but won’t be moving on. Dd still has straigh A’s in her honors classes (plus an A in AP STAT and loves it), ds has more A’s than B’s. Both are also still playing soccer this season and next, and spring track starts in another week for them. I’m loving how great they get along now (I think Dd matured quicker than Dd).

Since we are in the middle of college decisions for dd18, not even thinking about college for them. Ds’s club soccer team is going to Barcelona the end of June, I think DH will go with him. Dd will be getting a nose job (apparently she broke it at some point in her life and has a very deviated septum).

Our big thing with college is, we now live in a different part of the country, so all my previous college-search knowledge is pretty useless. Also, our flagship school (UNC-Chapel Hill) is both excellent academically, and a good value (tuition is under $10k/year for in-state). DD keeps insisting she wants to go far, far away. Problem is, she doesn't have the personality to support being so far from home on her own. Heck, at this point, she can barely manage a few days away from Mom and Dad. Plus, she has some anxiety issues (no diagnosis, just some issues), so we have to choose wisely. Add in the fact that she wants to go to law school--which we can afford, but only if she goes to a state school--and it's a bit of a challenge. Plus, she gets so busy with dance and orchestra, visiting campuses is tough to fit into our schedule.

On the good side, I don't think she'll have a problem getting into a really good school--not super elite or anything, but the tier below that shouldn't be a problem.

Things are going well here. DD is in the middle of her winter guard season. She is doing trying out for the solo and ensemble competition for band to try to make it to state. She was accepted into Mu Alpha Theta which I or her father was never smart enough to achieve. She took the Pre-ACT this week which she should have done fine on because she has already took the ACT. Her school picked 4 kids out of the entire sophomore class to fill out an application for a summer program called Missouri Scholars Academy at the University of Missouri - Columbia. DH and I were pretty proud of her for getting picked to apply. We find out in March if her essays and application got her into the 3 week program. She just finished up picking classes for next year. I think she will be happy when her dual credit US History class is done as she is not fond of the teacher much. As far as driving goes DD has her permit, but she hasn't been driving much even with the permit. She says she wants to focus on school and when school is out we can focus on driving. I'm trying not to push her much and let her take her pace. Last thing I need is a kid on the road that is not confident. We have discussed colleges because next school year we will have to start the visits. Right now our list of 5 is University of Kansas, Missouri State, Southeast Missouri State, and Truman University. University of Kansas is where DD really wants to attend, but she has to get that ACT score up if we are going to afford KU.

My DS is having a great year. All As, taking 2 AP classes, swim season is over and he's waiting for track to start. We've been doing the whole college application thing with older DS this year and I think some of it has started the younger about thinking about what he might want to study (math and possibly stats). He's already getting plenty of mail and emails from colleges based on his PSAT scores. He's also starting to learn to drive and can't wait for summer when he'll take driver's ed, go back to work as a lifeguard and generally live a charmed life ;).

Well DD's JV basketball team won County Championship last night!! We won last year too, so we went Back to Back, which is awesome! They didn't lose any games last year or this year- so 31/0. It was crazy! DD is on Cloud 9(as we are).
So JV Basketball is a wrap, Next year Varsity!! Up next track- tryouts are Friday. She was on the team last year, so expecting the same.
