Say Please in French - A June and Sept. 2018 DLP TR *Updated 4/22

I really enjoyed reading about your DLP experience! Makes me want to scheme on how to get there one day. I would definitely want to splurge on the Disneyland Hotel - how fantastic! I will definitely stick around to read about your Sept. trip and maybe more updates on your move to the UK. Thanks for taking the time to share your trip with us!

To me, if you're going to splurge and go to Disneyland Paris, then you might as well go big and stay at the Disneyland Hotel. I've stayed at the Polynesian and the Contemporary - some of the closer hotels to the MK - and they hold a candle to proximity and convenience to the Disneyland Hotel.
I will try and remember to include any little tidbits about our move this summer. Alex and I are at the point where we just want to get over there and start exploring. Before we do, though, we are going back to the states for a month and have a grand Disney trip planned, so it'll be an exciting summer for our family!

This has been a great trip report. I'm glad you got to experience DLP as an American and enjoyed it for it's worth. I look forward to your next DLP trip report and maybe sometime in the future I might be able to see you while I'm there.

It was a lot of fun taking the time to explore the parks and get the chance to enjoy another park outside of Walt Disney World. It makes me want to visit Disneyland in CA, and Alex wants to go to Disney Sea now.

What a great end to your trip! I feel like its SO hard to leave Disney when you can leave whenever you feel like and dont have a plane to catch! My family learned that the hard way the one time we drove and we left way too late and timed it perfectly to hit all of the terrible Atlanta traffic. But it seems like a great way to end your trip with a ride on BTMRR and a decent lunch!

And of course I'll be sticking around to here about your September trip as well!!

I can see how having a set flight can help with leaving Disney.

Alex and I made a horrible mistake once, back when Landon was 13 months old. We stayed until 6 p.m. because we were like, "Landon can sleep in the car and it'll be his normal bedtime." We failed to think that we would be exhausted after a day of park hopping with a baby! Alex drove the first 3 hours while I crashed, and then I had to take over for the remaining 4 hours. That was the only time ever in all our travels that I had to drive.
So we've definitely become more strict about leaving at a certain time, but it's really hard!

I really enjoyed your report! It was so fun to see your meetups and how much the kiddos have changed!

Thanks for reading! It blows my mind that Dugette and I really started talking on our kids' first Disney trip when they were around 1. Now they're kindergartners and fast friends.

Still here and absolutely staying for the September trip!

We are just about 3 months from our trip, so looking forward to hearing more!

It was interesting explaining to people back home who I spent my time with at DLP.
"How are these people your friends?"
"I met them online."
"So this was your first time actually meeting them? And you watched each others kids?"

LOL!! I sure get that!

Alex loves Earl of Sandwich. It's not bad, but it's a sandwich shop. I feel like now there's so many other great QS options at Disney Springs. But then again, I don't get American sandwiches that much anymore so I think that was part of the appeal. But when I lived in Florida and had access to Publix subs and Firehouse, I didn't comprehend Alex wanting to eat at Earl every trip. :confused3

Hmm, well when I lived in Crapistan, I didn't American food at ALL unless I made it, so anytime we could get a burger of ANY sort, we'd for sure do it. I also know that while, I'd agree EoS isn't the BEST sandwich out there, they are good and it may have a nostalgic value added too. EoS was one of the VERY first places I ever ate at DTD a million years ago, and it just gives me the feels when I pass it. Someday I'll make it in there again. :goodvibes

Still here and absolutely staying for the September trip!

We are just about 3 months from our trip, so looking forward to hearing more!

Thanks for hanging on!
Are you getting excited for your trip? The weather should be great by then, or at the very least the sun won't be setting at 5 o'clock anymore! Do you have any one attraction in particular that you don't want to miss?

How sweet

Looking forward to reading about your Sept trip.

Most days, Landon is very nice to his sister. We'll see if that carries through as he gets older.

EoS was one of the VERY first places I ever ate at DTD a million years ago, and it just gives me the feels when I pass it. Someday I'll make it in there again. :goodvibes

That makes sense. Nostalgia can play a huge part in your opinion on a place. Alex and I's first Disney restaurant was Kona Cafe and while we have no desire to go back anytime soon, I would probably shed some ugly tears if it ever closed.
Also, I think I've heard before that the EoS in CA is the best of them all, so at least when you do stop and have a bite you're having it at one of the premier locations. (Or wait, I'm just assuming you were referring to the CA one. I might me mistaken.)

So very cool that y'all were able to hang out so much with @Dugette & family during your trip!

I can still picture in my mind how close the entrance to the park is from the Disneyland Hotel. It totally spoils you!! Our pixie dust upgrade there is still something I sometimes can't believe really happened to us! I'm glad y'all were able to get that experience too.

Loved reading about your trip, and of course I'm in for the long haul as you recap September!

As always, wonderful updates! I loved “coming along” on your June vacation and will absolutely stick around for September!!!

I think that before anyone visits Disneyland Paris, they look at pictures and think staying at Sequoia or Newport or NY won't be that bad. (Because they're definitely close and since we visit a lot they're perfect for us.) But once people get to DLP for their once in a lifetime trip and see how just how close the Disneyland Hotel is they regret not splurging for it. Whenever someone asks about the parks, I try to sell the hotel, because it's one of those unique Disney experiences you want to say you've done.

As always, wonderful updates! I loved “coming along” on your June vacation and will absolutely stick around for September!!!

Thank you! I just noticed in your signature that you have a Hawaii report going; I'm on my way over to subscribe and read now.

Disneyland Paris Race Weekend Report 2018

Last fall, my family made a quick trip to Disneyland Paris to participate in the race weekend. A Disney half marathon had been a dream of mine for 4 years, and the previous winter I felt like the time was finally right to accomplish the goal. Little things like deploying husbands, birthing babies, and out of shape-ness had kept the dream at bay. But 2018 was the year I was going to make it happen. I spent the summer training and together, each member of my family participated in a race and had a blast.

To make the weekend even more exciting, we were joined on our trip by one of my dearest friends and her family. Ashley and I met through a mom’s group the first year we moved to Germany, and the minute she spotted my Disney Dooney and I her Haunted Mansion car decal we knew we would be best friends. She has two kids the same ages as Landon and Evie who are very close, and our husbands are buddies so our families have meshed into one big group over the years. People have come to expect that if one group is at an event, the other is sure to be close by.

In the spring, I had told Ashley’s husband about the half marathon. Thinking it sounded awesome, he also signed up for the event, and together we registered the kids to the run the kid races. Ashley refused to sign up for the 10K with Alex, so we weren’t completely matching. But that was all right.

(The runDisney bug bit Zach, the husband, so hard that over the summer he signed up for the 2019 Star Wars half in April so he could try for the Castle to Chateau medal. Hadn’t even run his first race and he’d already committed himself to two more…)

The D.’s weren’t staying at the same resort as my family, but we still planned to see them a lot throughout the course of the trip. It was going to be a jam packed weekend full of running and visiting and hopefully some park touring!

Friday, September 19th, 2018 Part 1:

The morning of our departure arrived, and I couldn’t have been more nervous. A part of me wanted to go and just get the whole thing over with, the other part of me was dreading the task. A week earlier, Landon had given me his back-to-school head cold so I had spent the last few days curled on the couch with Dayquil and tissues. The last training run I did was on Tuesday, and while it was supposed to be 4 miles I had to stop after 2 because of too much coughing.

I was terrified I wouldn’t be feeling better by Sunday, and I packed the car that morning worried about how much the cold would affect my overall pace.

To add to the turbulent emotions, Landon was having a rough morning. He was furious that we were letting him skip school to go to Disney.

:rolleyes2:rolleyes2

Yes, you read that right. Landon threw a massive fit when we told him the news. He screamed, hollered, told us he was going to the bus stop by himself, kept whining, “Nuh uh, I am NOT going to Disney” whenever his sister goaded him with “You’re not going to school today.”:sad2:

It was a meltdown of epic proportions, made worse when he checked his school calendar on the fridge and realized he was missing his Reading Buddy day. (A time when he gets to go read with a 3rd grader.) You would have thought we were telling him he was going to get shots at the doctor or making him bathe the dog the way he was bawling.

We tried to let him know that he was going to Disney WITH HIS BEST FRIEND!

Seriously, kid. You’re about to ride Dumbo with your number one person.
Why are you fighting this?!?!

The attitude and grumpiness continued through the morning, past dropping the dog off at the kennel and eventually tapered off at the gas station. Before getting on the road we actually got a smile out of him:

01.JPG
(And before anyone comments, this was before we started driving and the chest clip got moved up.)

I had been messaging Ashley all morning. She thought her husband was going to have to work a half day on Friday and they didn’t anticipate getting to Disney until late that night. Fortunately, his boss had told him the night before he didn’t have to go in, so they were trying to leave the same time as us.

When we got on the autobahn, they were fifteen minutes behind but two hours in we saw this in our side mirror:

02.JPG

We’d found each other on the road! All four kids thought that was hilarious and got a kick out of waving to each other from the windows.

The rest of the drive was uneventful and boring. I took cold medicine which knocked me out for most of it, and Alex listened to an audiobook.

For this trip, we were staying at Sequoia Lodge. The Disneyland Hotel would have been our first choice, but Sequoia’s price was too good to pass up. Alex booked our entire weekend through a travel agent, so when we stepped into the resort lobby we checked in at the counter set aside for the TA’s. There wasn’t a line and soon we were handed a packet with our park tickets and room keys.

Sweet. It was only about 1:30, so I wasn’t expecting our room to be ready yet. It really helped that it was, though, because I was able to take the kids in and clean down the room while Alex went and got our bags.

The room was standard:

03.JPG

With the biggest downfall being the lack of outlets. This is pretty common among SL guests, and I have since learned people bring surge protectors with them when they stay here. Definitely stealing that idea for next fall!

Our view was nice and peaceful:

04.JPG

Shortly after we got our belongings settled, Alex and I walked the kids over to the Expo Center to pick up our bibs. It was a very short walk, with the Expo located on the other side of the lake from Seqouia Lodge.

Other runners were pretty peeved with the people in charge of the Magicrun weekend, because they didn’t email the vouchers we needed to present in order to pick up our bibs until that Thursday. So everybody traveling before Friday had to stand in long lines at the computers to fill out and print their forms. It was a nightmare and caused backups lasting over an hour.

Thank goodness, Alex was able to print ours out at home that morning, so we were able to sail past the mob.

05.JPG

Our first look at what the weekend would entail.

Things got real for me when I saw the race course:

06.JPG

Holy smokes, I was about to run that.
Settle down, nerves! We still got two more days to get through!

The expo was a ghost town while we were there. Alex and I split up with him getting his and the kids packets and me going to get mine. None of us had to wait at any place.

I’ve seen photos of the WDW runDisney merchandise sections. Disneyland Paris’s is not nearly to that scale.

This was ours:

07.JPG

It was small, but it fit our needs. I have tapered my souvenir purchases down a lot over the years, and I wasn’t planning on buying anything that day. But then I got to see the I Did It t-shirts that were available during pre-sale online and changed my tune.

I loved that it had the race course on the back in pink and lime green colors:

08.JPG

For less than 20 Euros, it was a great purchase. I wear it on days when I’m feeling a little glum and need to remind myself of how much I’m capable of so long as I have the right mindset.:goodvibes

Past the merchandise were sponsor booths and the gigantic wall of every racers’ names:

09.JPG

We found ours and took a couple selfies with them, then moved on to another wall where photographers were taking pictures with people in front of a villains background. The theme for this year’s race was Disney Villains so it was a cute backdrop that I made Alex stop for:

10.JPG

Were we ready?

:confused3

The jury was still out for me, but regardless I had my bib and nothing was left standing in my way.

Time to put those important docs in our bags and switch our focus from the races to the parks. We were ready to head into the Disneyland Park for an afternoon of rides!

Up Next…What Kind of Time Did You List for Him?

Oh Landon! That will be a funny thing to tease him about when he gets older!

Sounds like your travels went really smoothly! And a nice bonus having your room ready early!

It's funny seeing such a small selection of Race merchandise compared to the pics I've seen of the Orlando race expo. I like the shirt you ended up buying!

That is too funny about Landon! I dont think I ever would have reacted that way as a kid :rotfl:

That stinks that you had such a head cold the week leading up! Hopefully it didn't hurt you too much during your run!

Oh, Landon- I hear you! My parents had to drag me to Disney when I was in 8th grade and had to miss a dance. It was terrible. Until I got on the plane!

I am so happy to hear more about DLParis- as my DH just told me that if dates work out- we can go when/if we go to London this summer! He even said we could stay on property. For just DH and I, would you recommend the Disneyland Hotel? Or too pricy/other hotels ok?

Sounds like an interesting start to the trip. Landon's an interesting kid. But it's nice that he's so interested in school ... even if that does manifest in some weird ways.

Wow, that expo merchandise selection is small. At WDW there's a whole building of just merch. It's very very different.

To be honest, I don't think I'd be able to do a RunDisney Marathon at any Disney Theme Park even if I tried. I know I did cross country at school but it was never like 4K or whatever it is for these Marathons. I mean I don't think I'd be able to get past the first day let alone the whole run.

Unlike Landon I actually welcomed trips to DLP away from school. Oh bless him he's missing out on his reading event and annoyed that he's going to be able to do it. He's a funny kid that Landon, nice but funny.

Sorry I've been away so long! I finally caught up on all the updates I missed!

Alex and I had to kind of trick our kids into eating their chicken burgers. For some reason, neither of them like burgers or sandwiches (outside of PB & J) or anything on a bun.

I was the same way as a child. I wouldn't even eat a bun around my hot dog. Now I'm reasonably normal though, so there's still hope for them! :rotfl:

Well, this night we had no choice but to get them both chicken burgers.

This did not go over well at first.

They fought back and whined and cried, swore they wouldn’t eat a single bite…the usual dramatics. Alex and I had to sell them hard on the burgers. The only thing that got them to try it was telling them their food were chicken nuggets masquerading as hot dogs.

*Sigh*

:rotfl:

Proof our kids were eating a sandwich:
0047-jpg.377633

Impressive! Yeah, as a kid my mom would have given up and I would be eating the chicken patty only by itself with a fork. I was such a weirdo.

And stumbled onto the second greatest plushes at Disneyland Paris:
0057-jpg.377638

Lion King!

:eek::eek:

These are gorgeous! I love Rafiki :lovestruc

Whenever someone asks us if we know any Spanish, Alex throws it right to me, because he knows when I was much younger, I was somewhat proficient in it. But that was a longgg time ago, and I always get nervous because Alex makes it seem like I’m a pro.

He’s got way too much faith in my ability.

This is me and Nathan with French. My French is pretty rusty, but Nathan always calls on me for it when needed.

It was a beautiful evening, and I was gifted with a spectacular view of the park from my perch:
0071-jpg.377645

Wow! Beautiful :lovestruc

The last Disney day.

What a sad statement.

“But she would miss out. I go places with Evie. Not by myself!”

Just like that my grand idea of a weekend away with my oldest shattered. Landon was visibly upset that I had the audacity to leave Evie; if one kid goes to Disney then they all go. What’s vacation without your little sister to share in the shenanigans?:confused3

Oh my goodness! Landon is a sweetie for not leaving his sister behind. But so much for your great plan!

After our mini photo shoot, Evie begged us to go on the carousel.

Because nothing’s better than the carousel at Disney.

You guys should know this by this point in the trip report, right?

Naturally.

And then laughed hard when in the next second I captured his Dad face in action:
0036-jpg.380095

:rotfl: Such a dad moment.

Not twenty seconds after the carousel began moving, someone unbuckled their seatbelt and caused the whole ride to stop, followed by a Cast Member coming back through and checking everyone all over again.

Don’t try and tell me you feel tortured by It’s a Small World. Go on Disneyland Paris’s carousel and then we’ll talk.

Oh my goodness! That's intense!

For the moment, princesses are out and villains are in.

Which I can live with. So long as it means we get to buy that Scar plush next fall…:rotfl2:

:rotfl2:

After that final photo, we said goodbye to Dugette and her family for good, with high hopes that we would see them again one day. I can’t speak for Dugette, but I know what started as a great online friendship evolved into a genuine one that I want to keep going for years to come.

That's so wonderful! And it seems like Landon and Izzy have the same thing going on, too!

:lovestruc I love this photo of Landon.

06-jpg.383559

Holy smokes, I was about to run that.
Settle down, nerves! We still got two more days to get through!

Woah! That's quite a course! Can't wait to hear how it went. :)

Poor wee Landon is such a loyal brother and student not wanting trips to Disney without Evie and now, not wanting to miss school! I’m guessing he likes to “play by the rules” My older boy was exactly the same at that age ( still is most of the time and he’s 21). :confused3
I’m in awe of people who run! :worship:In my dreams I’d love to run a Disney race. In reality running for a bus is a challenge lol:rotfl:
I love the t-shirt and the fact that it gives you strength and joy when you need it most!:thumbsup2
Can’t wait to hear how you all get on. Hoping your cold takes a hike so you can enjoy your race. :goodvibes

Omg this is why I will never ever do a surprise trip! Have you seen the videos of the kids flipping out? Like for weeks parents tell kids they are going to the beach or whatever then that morning they say surprise it’s Disney and the kids flip out! Or when they tell the kids there are going to see grandparents and pull up to Disney. Google it there are some classics (also not sure I would post my kids having a meltdown like that, but it confirmed surprise trips are not for me).

(And before anyone comments, this was before we started driving and the chest clip got moved up.)

Ugh how sad is life that you needed to post a disclaimer...

For less than 20 Euros, it was a great purchase. I wear it on days when I’m feeling a little glum and need to remind myself of how much I’m capable of so long as I have the right mindset.:goodvibes

Love this! You go girl!

It's funny seeing such a small selection of Race merchandise compared to the pics I've seen of the Orlando race expo. I like the shirt you ended up buying!

Landon's a unique kid. We're absolutely dreading having to tell him that he's finishing school two weeks early in order for us to move. He's going to lose his mind!

I think if/when I go to an Orlando race I'll be a little overwhelmed with the merchandise area.

That is too funny about Landon! I dont think I ever would have reacted that way as a kid :rotfl:

That stinks that you had such a head cold the week leading up! Hopefully it didn't hurt you too much during your run!

Right before the school year started, I pulled up the calendar and remember going, "Oh nooooo! The race is three weeks after Landon goes back to school. Just enough time for him to catch those back to school germs and give it to me."
And sure enough, he did!!! I've got to get better about upping my immune system next fall so I don't repeat that again.

Oh, Landon- I hear you! My parents had to drag me to Disney when I was in 8th grade and had to miss a dance. It was terrible. Until I got on the plane!

A dance is a big deal in 8th grade! I completely understand you being upset about that.

Oh, that's so exciting!! Hmmm, I would definitely recommend staying at either Sequoia Lodge or the Disneyland Hotel. The Disneyland Hotel is very Grand Floridian-esq so it's elegant and has lots of perks. However, since you won't have kids with you park time and walking won't be as big a factor so Sequoia would be fine.
I guess I would say, if you have the money to spare go ahead and splurge on the Disneyland Hotel. But if you don't want to be too extravagant then Sequoia would be the next best option.

Sounds like an interesting start to the trip. Landon's an interesting kid. But it's nice that he's so interested in school ... even if that does manifest in some weird ways.

Wow, that expo merchandise selection is small. At WDW there's a whole building of just merch. It's very very different.

Landon's very unique. I used to work with kids and had made education my career, so I thought I'd seen it all. But Landon throws me for a loop on an almost daily basis.

I think I'll be a little overwhelmed if and/or when I got to a WDW expo.

To be honest, I don't think I'd be able to do a RunDisney Marathon at any Disney Theme Park even if I tried. I know I did cross country at school but it was never like 4K or whatever it is for these Marathons. I mean I don't think I'd be able to get past the first day let alone the whole run.

Landon is certainly unique. I never know what he's going to do or say.
Disney races are pretty generous with pace requirements. I know most people walk the 5K courses. Not to mention, people rest for 30-60 minutes in character meet and greet lines, so I'm sure that helps with fatigue.

These are gorgeous! I love Rafiki :lovestruc

Right?! I still can't believe my kids didn't have any interest in the Lion King plushes.

Woah! That's quite a course! Can't wait to hear how it went.

Seeing that massive map with the course really intimidated me! I had ran a 10.5 mile course leading up the race, so deep down I knew I would be capable of completing the half marathon...it just still took me back.

Poor wee Landon is such a loyal brother and student not wanting trips to Disney without Evie and now, not wanting to miss school! I’m guessing he likes to “play by the rules” My older boy was exactly the same at that age ( still is most of the time and he’s 21). :confused3

Landon is a very routine oriented and organized kid. In general, he likes to play by the rules, but he does struggle with behavior in school. He's almost always getting in trouble in class because he won't stop talking!

The Disney races are really geared to all abilities. The 5Ks, in particular, are meant to be "fun runs" and don't have any pressure.
My mother did a Disney 5K about 7 years ago, and she walked the entire course! Another walker found her and they decided to finish the course together. She absolutely hates running and cardio-like exercises, but she had an absolute blast at this 5K.
So I say if you can walk 3 miles, then you can absolutely do a Disney race!

Yes! My sister in-law shared a video of some kids getting sooooo upset they weren't going to their grandparent's house like they thought, because that would have been Landon and his cousin's reaction! Don't get a kid's hopes up for one thing and then suddenly change it on them!
With Alex's job we have to deal with a lot of unexpected surprises, so we're firm believers in not springing additional stuff on our kids.

Ugh how sad is life that you needed to post a disclaimer...

I've been a mom on social media long enough to know I need to cover my bases...:sad2:

This is where we are currently booked for our trip so can’t wait to hear your thoughts. How’s the distance to the parks etc. I am considering upgrading but I’m not sure the additional cost for the Disneyland hotel will be worth it.

Sequoia Lodge is really nice. The rooms are small, but that's just the standard in Europe. And the walk to and from the parks is only about 10-15 minutes. Plus, if you want to grab something to eat or drink in Disney Village, then it's along the way. The biggest pain while we were staying at the Disneyland Hotel was the only restaurant open for breakfast was Starbucks. So we had to walk down to Disney Village and then turn around and walk back to our resort.

My only piece of advice with SL is to bring a surge protector with extra outlets! I'm not exaggerating when I say there's only about 3 in the room.
