This Is Us- Season 3

I dont think it was one of there better shows but it hit close to home with me. My daughter just loved dance, spent every waking moment in dance class. Then she got a real nice teaching job at a real nice suburb in Cleveland. She left it to run a dance studio and teach some classes also. You go Katie

Loved seeing Dr. Luka again!

I always love seeing Phylicia Rashad. I've enjoyed her in the Creed movies. And I've loved seeing her sister Debbie Allen in Grey's and Swat. What a talented pair of sisters.

But Beth going back and teaching dance? And Randall in his new job as a councilman? They must be doing a great job watering that money tree in their basement.

I forgot that Debbie Allen is her sister.

The best part of the episode was Beth running into young Randall.

Randall's face was priceless. It was like the sun came out. :rotfl:

(And I couldn't tell whether the accent was accurate if you paid me, but it was pretty!)

I was simply thinking out loud how funny it would have been.

A tad off topic but here's my favourite video for you -

So, we only have like 3 1/2 seasons left?!?

Apparently they knew from day one the complete arc of the show.

Not really. - I just figured they took a lot of shots, and this one came out good.

But you never know what will be important on this show, and speculation is part of the fun, so I'll entertain the theory. I see Randall looking toward the future, Jack and Beth looking at the audience (as if they're the narrators), Rebecca Daydreaming, Kevin lost in thoughts of the past, Kate just sad, and Toby - for some reason I can't guess - angry.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that the show runners have said that they will likely end This Is Us after season 6.

While I'm sad about that, I'm also happy at the same time because so many shows go on for way too long and the characters' stories suffer in the process.

I listened to an interview with the creator, his name escapes me right now, but he said that he had the entire show written before he pitched it. He said that he wrote the entire series and has the ending completed. He said that due to the time jumping that the show does, he had to have the entire show written before he pitched it or he didn't think the executives would "get it". While it makes sense, it's also sad to know that there is a definite end to the show. Of course, on the other hand it means they won't keep dragging stuff out to make it last longer either.

We were discussing the similarities to Misty Copeland (me and DD15, who dances ballet) during the episode. The one thing that bothered us was, during the entire episode, they kept it all about ballet, but then at the end, Beth's dancing was much more like modern or jazz. I recognize that this might have been the limitations of the actress, or you could spin it that she found the movement more freeing, literally and figuratively. But it was noticeable--and irritating to DD15, who has to work really hard for every ballet gain she makes (she recently earned her pointe shoes).

BTW, the dad was played by Carl Lumly--I can't for the life of me remember what he's been in through the years, but I definitely recognized the name.

It stood out for me, but I also found my heart up in my throat at the thought of anyone attempting to go full out ballet with essentially no real warmup and not having worked up to small ballet moves for a very, very long time. My daughters studied ballet and dance for a decade and a decade plus. They're both much younger than Beth, yet neither one could walk up to the barre today and decide to run through the moves without at least a couple months working up to it.

Yeah, I had read that in an article somewhere and also that they have already filmed some of the closing scenes. Makes sense since the kids have already grown quite a bit.

I also love that she bumped into Randall. I think one of the very important themes in this show is how the choices we make (both the big ones and the little, mundane things) affect our paths and connect us in ways we can't imagine at the time. I'm big into silver linings, so I'm glad they used that moment to let us know right away that what we felt was a bad decision by her mom ended up leading Beth to the family she has and loves today.

I was holding my breath when Bethany got out of mom's car and walked into that freshman mixer, dying to know if we were going to meet one Randall Pearson. It made me so happy to see it, even though I know it happened at some point obviously.

I've wondered for quite a while if that isn't precisely what is meant by the title of the series, that all this stuff along the way, big and little, results in us being us.

I watched Milo on Ellen yesterday and he said that if there’s huge outrage in season six that it’s ending, there is a chance it could be continued. Maybe he was just saying that, though, because it’s what the audience wanted to hear.

I think you're right he was probably trying to not smash the audience's hopes. Once it was obvious in season one how the story was being told it only made sense that there had been an outline of the whole story when they started. If they mess with the outline to extend or to contract the seasons it's gonna get real janky.

I agree. That's what happened with Lost. The writers and producers had no clue how huge a hit it would be. I believe they only planned on 3 seasons and then had to come up with stuff to make it last longer, just ruined the show doing that.

I never knew that. I didn't watch that show but I remember it being popular and then I remember hearing fans trash it but I didn't realize that's what happened.

I wonder if Randall ended up at that school. Remember at the counseling session, Rebecca screamed how Randall was the only one that stayed with her and didn't leave her.
Washing DC was not that far away from PA, but I have a feeling Kate and Kevin left for LA.

If you watch the beginning of each show, there is always a different Director and Writer that gets credited.
With the Writer-I don't know if the person has a team or writers and that person gets credit, but it truly is different each week.
The last show about Beth was written by Eboni Freeman. Directed by Ann Fletcher who was an American dancer, actress, choreographer and film director. She is best known for her films Step Up (2006), 27 Dresses (2008) and The Proposal (2009). Eboni does not have any credits listed on Wikipedia. What I am trying to say, is I think the producers bring in writers and directors that know what they are writing about and directing. So some people do not like some of the shows as much as other ones. This probably explains why some shows are so different.

Very well could be. I was surprised how anxious I was watching it, waiting to see if that's where she meets Randall. Even if it hadn't been at that event, obviously they wind up together, but I guess I've become a bit more invested than I realized in them as a couple.

It's funny you mention that because I actually knew Anne Fletcher so I realized we were no doubt going dancing the minute I saw her name in the credits.

BTW, how I know her happened before the movies and was dance related, but it's not interesting. I only mention it at all because of OhMari's comments about different writers and different directors and how that may factor into the specific episodes.

On another forum, someone posted they saw a small sign at the registration table that said Carnegie Mellon, and then someone confirmed by way of the internet that Randall went to college at Carnegie Mellon University, which is in Pittsburgh.
