Class of 2021 Parents

Well DD's JV basketball team won County Championship last night!! We won last year too, so we went Back to Back, which is awesome! They didn't lose any games last year or this year- so 31/0. It was crazy! DD is on Cloud 9(as we are).
So JV Basketball is a wrap, Next year Varsity!! Up next track- tryouts are Friday. She was on the team last year, so expecting the same.
We don’t have track tryouts, but just the fastest go to certain meets. As of now Dd is the fastest female sprinter, but there is a rumor of a freshman joining who is very fast who didn’t do winter track, so we will see! I love how inclusive track is. Dd just told me they took the PSAT today, felt she doesnt know grammar, but the math was easy except it was all stuff she learned a while ago - tutoring will start in August. Her second behind the wheel session is today, then she and ds will only need one more. Yikes, teaching two to drive at the same time seems scary.

Yeah, we have tryouts here, last year DD was one of the only freshman, then one got hurt and another quit, so they had her running with the seniors in all the relays.
Sophomore year is going so fast!!!

Yeah, only one person in this household is excited for DD15 to learn to drive, and it's not me!

I have a question, though--how do you teach them to drive when your car has all the fancy tech to make it easier? I got my minivan 6 months ago, and it has back-up cameras, lane drift alerts, mirrors that flash if someone's in your blind spot--all sorts of things that are nice, but don't encourage learning to look over your shoulder and assess the road yourself. I'm concerned that my child will just assume "no beep, it's okay to back up", and run over the cat or back out when it's unsafe or whatever. The minivan I turned in was 10 years old, and it had much fewer safety features.

We don't let him use the car with the backup camera (it's our newest car and we have two others, including the one he will be driving when he gets his license/that his brother drives now). Lol but even if all he drove had backup cameras, we would still be teaching him to look over his shoulder and use mirrors.

I drive a 2015 Toyota Sienna with side view monitors...I know you turn those off. Probably the other safety can be turned off too...

My DD just did all of her classroom driver's ed hours. Now we need her to actually get her permit and driving hours in. You need to have your permit 6 months before you can your license and I don't want it to be winter again before she can take her test-that happened to my son-his test was canceled at least once due to weather and it just adds to the whole worry.

We are dealing with a hot mess with my DD's driving school. She did her classroom time back in August and they said they like them to wait til about a month before to do the 6 hours drive time required. So that's fine, we scheduled it for this week. I kept calling to reschedule Monday(because it was the JV Bball Championship game), no answer, not calling me back etc. I go on the website, THEY CLOSED!!! So all these kids/parents are screwed because we paid $340.00 for
drivers ed w/6 hour instructed time, and can't get it done. So it said call MVA and they will contact us about trying to get a refund from the Driving school insurance company. Meanwhile- my daughters appt is March 25, and she hasn't done drive time. Sooooo, we also have to pay out of pocket for that- cheapest is $250, and they are NOT offering sympathy discounts for our issue. OMG so irritated. I will probably never get that money back.

That stinks! Our local behind the wheel is $300 after a discount. We aren’t allowed to drive with them until the 6 hours are done, had your Dd been practicing? Dd22 ended up passing her exam after getting her 6 hours, and then not driving at all for a year until a week before the test (we got her a refresher course and DH took her to the DMV course every night).

Yes, they are allowed to drive here in Maryland as soon as they get their learners permit at 15 and 9 months. She has driven all over the place(with us in the car of course), on the highway, to school everyday.
Here you have to wait until you are 16 and 6 months to get license. At this point I've paid ALOT!!! ughhh

We are permit at 16 after the 6 hours, provisional at 17, full at 18. It sounds like your Dd is at least ready! I had to pay $600 this go around with twins, dreading senior year costs already.

Yeah, I got a 2018 Sienna XLE in August. I don't get out much, she only has 2000 miles on her. I didn't think about turning off the safety features--I'm sure you can, but the owner's manual is in the car, and when I'm in the car, I'm, you know--driving! We only found out a couple weeks ago that I have heated seats! Not very valuable in NC, but still, I have them, and never would have known (DH figured it out).

We had our third "crap" car, but we ended up giving it to my older DD--she's 23 and lives in Boston, a great place to have a crap car, if you must have a car at all.

I still have to figure out how they do driver's ed, etc. down here. I've been slack, or maybe in denial. Every state is different. In NH, there was no learner's permit--once you turned 15 1/2. you just needed to have a copy of your birth certificate in the car, in case you got pulled over. Of course, the Live Free or Die state doesn't require that you have car insurance, either (we did, but it's not required by law). One thing it did teach me was, if you live close to a border, check the laws in neighboring states--in Vermont, they loved to pull over NH drivers and ding them for not having car insurance, which IS required in VT!

In my Sienna the switch for the side mirror monitors is on the dash to the left of the steering wheel-about the size of a postage stamp. I love my heated seats, heated steering wheel and cant believe how convenient the auto high beams are. :D My DD class of 2021 is my youngest. Her brother & sister learn to drive on our 2006 Sienna that we still have that has none of those features.

In MA you need 30 hours of classroom, 12 hours of road drivers ed plus 6 hours of observing other students driving Plus 40 additional driving hours with parents. You can get permit at 16 and must have for at least 6 months before road test. You can start classroom drivers ed at 15 yrs, 9 mths.

Yeah, we are in Maryland too and that always seemed backward to me, do drivers ed after the permit. (I grew up in a state where you take drivers ed, get your permit and then drive with your parents). DS got his permit in December and won't be taking drivers ed until summer but has already been driving quite a bit. He can't even test until September at the earliest but wants those hours done.

It's so crazy how different the laws are in each state.

Here in TN, you can get your permit at 15 -- just a written test required.

You do not have to take driver's ed here, although, DS did do it (30 hours classroom and 6 hours driving) last year about 2 months after getting his permit.

You can take the road test at 16 as long as you've had your permit for at least 6 months. The parent has to certify that they've had 50 hours driving time (10 of those have to be night time hours) during the time they've had their permit.

The DL they get at 16 is restricted to only one additional passenger (unless someone 21+ is with you or if you're transporting siblings) and you can only drive between certain hours. I think at 17, you get another kind of DL where the restrictions are lifted on the number of passengers, but the driving hours are still somewhat restricted (not as much). At 18, it's a regular DL.

DS got his permit last March and has his road test scheduled in about 3 weeks. Unfortunately, we don't have car for him, so he'll just have use one of ours if needed. Our roads in our community suck due to lack of of infrastructure and there is so much construction (road widening/crap roads) that despite having his permit for a year, I still feel pretty nervous.

I must vent or I think steam will come out my head literally.

Oldest daughter got a letter in the mail that she was eligible to apply to honor society for Junior year. She needed to go by the teacher's office to pick up an application as well as get a teacher's recommendation to put with the application. Okay, Great she took care of both of those items. Due date for the paperwork was yesterday and on the paperwork it said no late applications will be accepted. She tells me in the car at 9pm last night that she didn't get a chance to drop the application by the teacher office because she was too busy with choir and the 8th graders coming to visit the school. :rolleyes2 Of course, I'm are highly irritated at her. I told her to give me the application and I scanned it to my email then forward it on to her email. I told her to write the teacher an email explaining why you did not get by the office today, attach the application and let her know know if she needs a paper copy that you will bring it by to her. It was technically still the 11th when she received it just not in paper format so I am hoping that they still accept it. If they don't I guess she learns an important lesson not be so nonchalant over important things and make sure they get done.

I just found this thread, so exciting - school is flying by! My dd played varsity waterpolo, varsity soccer (division 1 champs) and swim, as well as comp soccer and comp waterpolo. Currently has a 4.25 gpa and plans for 3 AP classes next year (yikes). We are learning to drive and she will take her permit test in May.

I guess it's time to start thinking about where she will be applying to colleges. We are hoping she might get some sort of scholarship for waterpolo. She was all league this year, ranked #2 in our league and scored 70 goals. Anyone have any thoughts about athletic scholorships?

I love to hear about so many other driven kids on this thread!

Well, DD16 officially got her license on Tuesday(you have to be 16 and 6 months). We added her as a driver on our insurance(ouch-$$ but not as bad as I expected), so she can drive our cars. DH works nights, I work days, so she will driving to/from school now by herself. I cannot deal with this "grown" business. LOL
We also just had to order school rings, they have a ring ceremony when they are juniors at school. I thought it was early- but guess not.
Track is coming along nicely, she also is doing a AAU/travel basketball league, so we are SUPER busy!!

DS got his driver's license last week. The cost to add him to our policy wasn't bad at all, but I know once we add another car to the policy (although, that won't be for a while), that it's going to hurt a lot more. We let him drive by himself to something at school this past weekend, and that was tough for me seeing him drive off by himself. :(

They took a practice ACT a couple of weeks ago at the same time the juniors were taking the real one. I would imagine they'll be getting the results soon for that.

DS is taking 4 AP classes next year -- that's double from this year -- hope it's not too stressful.

Did they wind up accepting it? DS got the letter inviting him to apply to for the NHS, too, but he's not going to do it. It's just not the type of thing he thinks he'd enjoy and he's already stretched pretty thin. He was supposed to go to a meeting today during lunch for something else he was invited to join, but I just realized that since I didn't remind him this morning, he probably forgot. Maybe he'll surprise me...

Yes, same for us, just adding him as a driver wasn't bad at all. We won't be adding a car for a while as well.

I think DD is taking 2 I think next year- she will be stressed. ughh

Dd and ds are running track, playing club soccer, and HS spring soccer. So track practice after school and saturdays, and then nightly soccer practices. Tuesday’s and Thursday’s Dd has back to back soccer practices at the same field, so 7:30 - 10. Ds and DH just left for a tournament in Virginia. Dd’s bff’s mom (who I’m friends with) told her mom the she thinks ds is hot (I hope he never finds out, this is a 10 year old friendship). They are definitely teenagers, lots of weekend parties.

Yes they ended up accepting it. They said they would allow a one time extension for her since it was technically in on the day even though it was not handed to her like she would have preferred.

DD was 1 of 4 kids in her sophomore class nominated by the counselors to apply for the Missouri Scholars Academy back in February. We got word about a week ago that she was selected for the opportunity. She will be attending the academy for 3 weeks in June at the University of Missouri Columbia. She was on cloud 9 when she got the email.
