We have an old loveseat in our small spare bedroom. Its very traditional, floral pattern from the late 80's. DS14 uses the room as his hang out, and would like the loveseat to look a little more manly!

He was looking at replacing it with his own money with a black modern futon style sofa, but those are generally too long, and he likes the arms on the loveseat to lean on.

I suggested getting a slipcover instead. This is a smaller size loveseat - def not the overstuffed look. It has t-cushions, and a skirt at the bottom. I was looking at the stretch 2-piece slipcovers, but I think even with the tight material, the slipcovers may be too big, and would also look awkward at the bottom where the skirt is. I want it to stay tucked in - he would def not want to be trying to mess around with it after sitting on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice for style or brand? I had no idea they were so pricey!

Thank you for your help!!

Any slipcover that I've ever had didn't seem to fit right and were always shifting...it drove me crazy. The best we found were Sure Fit, but they can get expensive.

It may be cheaper just to get a metal framed futon at Wal-mart or something for $100. My brother got one a few years ago, when he started college, and it wasn't deluxe furniture, but he and his buddies sat and played video games on it for four years, so it couldn't have been that bad.

It all just depends on what you want in your house. If you're looking for something a little more "mature" than a futon, then check out Sure Fit. :)

A suggestion on the skirt if you do go the slipcover route:

My sofa is a t-cusion w/ a skirt. I got the 2-piece stretchy one from Surefit. I pinned the skirt up so you don't even see it underneath the slipcover.

Also, I got some of those upholstery pins w/ the curlicue pin part. You put the big part of the slipcoverover the body of the sofa/loveseat and stretch it out into place and use the pins (you twist them in, taht's why the pin is curlicue) to hold the slipcover in place.

With the ready-made covers you will have difficulty solving the problem. You can try a custom slipcovers. Online you can request quotes to needleandshears, coverissimo and slipcovershop

Every time I have looked at getting slipcovers I could not believe the prices. I would probably wind up buying a new loveseat or futon which can be found for pretty cheap.

We were furniture shopping for our living room about six months ago and my 17 year old daughter was with us. She wound up seeing a brand new loveseat in the bargain area for $125 and wound up buying it for her room which she has set up like a lounge.

There are deals to be found.

As for slipcovers,I sometimes have seen them at Ocean State Job Lot and Christmas Tree Shops, etc. But it is hit or miss on what they have.

Thank you both for your replies! This is an old thread from 2013 :)
And we actually did end up buying a new loveseat for him instead. So your advice was spot on!

Slipcovers aren't cheap. I would just start watching all the listings on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for a better alternative replacement sofa. Trying to cover a 30-year-old sofa just seems to be putting good money after bad.
