My dd and I just got back from our spring break trip and it was a wonderful trip! We were in the parks April 13th, 15th (maxpass day), 16th, 17th, and 18th (maxpass day, we added this day on instead of going to San Diego). Here are my thoughts for the trip. (As background I haven't been to Disneyland Resort for about 2 and a half years so there were several changes but went 4-6 times a year from out of state for about 8 years before that gap.)
We got back yesterday and had awesome ride times throughout the week. To be honest we were shocked at how low the crowds were in Disneyland. Unless you got caught up in the parade or Fantasmic! crowds it didn't seem bad at all. Peter Pan took 25 minutes from getting in line to getting off . . . it had a wait time posted of 30 minutes and was the longest we waited for any ride the whole week I think. I'm not sure what the block outs were for spring break but it worked in our favor. DCA actually seemed much more crowded to us. The main thoroughfare from Carthay Circle back to the pier was packed from about 10:30 or 11 onwards. I personally dislike the Food and Wine festival for several reasons and the crowded walkways are part of it. Fastpass ran out for pretty much all the rides in DCA last week before the ones in Disneyland. Always before we have hopped to DCA to escape Disneyland crowds and this trip it was the opposite which was bizarre.
I'll start with DCA impressions.
Guardians of the Galaxy-- is so much funner than TOT ever was. It's not dark, dreary and depressing which I found TOT theming to be in the dungeon. The ride part itself is a blast. If you aren't trying it because you miss TOT or didn't like TOT give it a shot. You might fall in love with it. My dd very reluctantly went on it with me the first day and it is now her favorite ride and she hasn't even seen the movies. We probably rode it at least 20 times and only once went through standby.
Frozen play-- The effects are cool but honestly I think Anna almost ruined it for me. I'd seen it once before and had forgotten how annoying the Anna character is over acted. I think it is a deliberate choice but . . .ugg. She was just to much for me. I won't bother ever going again and I like the movie.
Pixar Pier-- I loved the re-theming of this.
Incridicoaster is awesome, California Screamin was cool but they have really stepped it up with the theming. I love the smell of the cookies, the family throughout the ride ect. I did get a num num cookie which was very good. It was on my list before I went but I really wanted it after the smell on the ride. LOL
Jessie's Round Up-- was themed well and cute but we only went once. It was one of our longer waits even though it said 10 minutes. The animals seemed to be jerkier going up and down and it seemed sloooow. DD loves carousels but missed King Tritons.
Jessie meet and greet-- was fun and well worth the short wait. She had so much energy and just happiness seemed to flow from her. I never knew her eyes were like flowers which was so cool.
TSMM-- fun as always but I loved having maxpass for it. I remember the days of waiting in the sun for 45 minutes. We only did it 2x the whole trip and both was with maxpass on the same morning. We didn't feel it was worth the standby wait when other things were calling our name.
We were going to do a board game but changed our minds when we saw the cost. $5 a pop was to much.
Ariel-- is one of our favorites and we did several times. I don't know if it is overlooked by a lot of people or just doesn't back up that often because it is a fast loader but we love it.
Carsland-- a fun atmosphere and not as crowded as it used to be.
Racers-- We were supposed to have fastpasses and for some reason they weren't showing up so we just went single rider. It was literally less than a minute before we were both assigned to cars once we walked through the queue. The fastpass line at that time was probably 10 minutes give or take so we took that as a score. There were parts of the ride inside that seemed darker than it used to be and the tractor was already tipped . . . I remember back to when it would tip over as you rode through but I don't think it's done that for years. Kind of sad.
Maters-- is a fun little ride if the wait is short.
Luigi's-- seemed to be down every time we were near it so it was a no go.
Monsters Inc-- we stopped by on our way to Guardians and the wait was like 25 minutes. We asked the CM if they were doing the buddy pass (which I read about just a few days before we left) and they were! We went in through the exit and got put on the next car to leave so that was a really fun little bit of magic. We rode a couple other times as well, just a fun little ride.
Animation Academy-- we had a humorous artist that kept cracking jokes which made the experience even better. Good job to her.
Crush-- this is always fun to go to. I think it gets looked over too and it really is a gem to sit down and rest but still be entertained.
Beasts Library ect-- it's always good to go see what character you are in the books and it is a cool area to explore. I do miss the days of Ursula's sea caves and being able to record yourself singing but I guess life moves on.
Soarin-- we only went once with fastpass but got the center row and counted ourselves lucky to not be on the sides. This used to be a favorite when it was Soarin over California and would have been done multiple times a trip. Now it's a one and done.
DCA food-- Onion Rings at Smokejumpers were great! Hamburger was the best we had on the trip including the one at Hollywood Burgers in LA. Dd got the birthday cake shake and it was actually super yummy. I only got 3 bites. hmm. However I got the cookies and cream Mickey shake at Schmoozies which I had really wanted to try. It was much more liquidy than I expected. The shake itself had a nice flavor but the cream is not whipping cream it's some kind of fake dairy topping I think and just wasn't that good. It looks awesome but honestly the birthday shake tasted much better to both of us. Bread bowls on the Wharf was good as always and the cookies and cream Mickey bread pudding was probably our favorite treat of the trip. Or maybe that birthday shake.
There seemed to be more Photopass people in DCA and most of them were really happy to be there and having fun doing little mini shoots.
CM's in general were very pleasant to be around, helpful and nice. Actually there was only one our whole trip that I can remember not having the magical spirit. She stood out to me because the others were all so friendly and in character but I actually felt bad for her cause I think she must have been having a bad day and we all have them.
Food and Wine and crowds-- so this is my 2nd time being to DCA when F&WF is going on and I really dislike how crowded it makes DCA feel. I think the food is overpriced even for park standards and since I am a fairly plain eater generally nothing appeals to me anyways. It feels like just another way for Disney to make money but not a very good value and it impacts everyones experience because of all the space it takes. I don't know if other factors were going on with the crowds like maybe Bugs Land being gone and I'm not sure about what passes could go in which parks but of the two parks DCA felt busier to Disneyland on all of our days. It used to be we would go from Disneyland to DCA to escape the crowds and this trip we did the opposite. It was a little bizarre being able to pull fp's longer in DL than DCA and being able to navigate better in DL than DCA in the evenings.
So on to Disneyland . . .
Train-- loved the updates to the dinosaur section between Tomorrowland and Main Street. It was very cool seeing the special effects they added and just seemed cleaner and crisper in some way. I love that the train can help you get around the parks without walking everyone too.
Fantasmic!-- was eh for me. My dd really wanted to do it so we did but she is a bit taller than me and was able to see better. I find the nighttime entertainment frustrating because without dedicating a lot of time and effort you can't really get a great view. Unless you overpay for seating. Sigh. Sometimes I'm to cheap but it rubs me wrong to have to pay almost a days entrance fee to get an actual seat to something that is included.I would have loved to see WOC but I can barely handle standing in one spot for the shows themselves let alone the time you have to stand before the shows. I think they do their best to accommodate the crowds but it is just physically hard to stand still that long after being on my feet all day. I wish I had splurged for my kids to see it back when they did the dessert party with seats. None of the currant packages appeal to us.
We did watch on one evening from over by the canoes and watched as the floats came off or went 'on stage'. That was cooler to me. We saw Prince Eric carry Ariel out in her fins and get her situated, saw Belle and the Beast, Rapunzel and Flynn come back to the island and they waved and stuff. Another night we happened to be on the train and went past the ship and saw tons of characters. It is amazing how they stay in character even though the only possible people to see them at that point were people on the train. Jack is so identifiable just by his stance.
Space Mountain-- only rode this once. I don't know why but it just doesn't seem worth the walk anymore. Did it used to have more stars?? It seemed like there were sections where it was pitch black for ages. Not scary but being surrounded by the stars is what I loved on that ride.
Star Tours-- we rode this quite a few times, only once on standby and that was because it was practically a walk on. One of the evenings we pulled a fp at about 8:30 and it was immediately usable. That was fun and a bit mind blowing too. All the fp's for DCA were gone at that point and yet here ST was with one that was good as soon as we got it.
Buzz Lightyear-- I was so happy that the Buzz animatronic was working. I thought it would be down but Buzz was jabbering away as always. He just makes me happy. I tend to suck at this ride but seemed to do better this trip.
Finding Nemo-- we hit this at just the right time one evening. We got on the first boat in and it was probably less than half full. So much more pleasant to ride when you can spread out and not feel so claustrophobic. If you want to ride this try and go when there is hardly anyone in line It was so nice not being full.
Matterhorn-- we did single rider and waited maybe 10 minutes. Both of us were on the right side which I had never been on and we both really enjoyed it. Somehow we never got back to it but it wasn't as jerky as I expected.
Jungle Cruise-- normally not a favorite of mine but in the spirit of my hubby who stayed home with the other kids we went on it and had an awesome skipper named Kyle. Probably the best skipper I have ever had on that ride in more the 10 ish years we have been going. His delivery was great and he had some fresh jokes.
Pirates-- I liked the stuff they added at the front, was disappointed there was no mist to go through and completely surprised at how badly it backed up at the end. Kind of ruined the experience for my dd. Just sitting for ages takes you out of the experience. The people behind us were locals and said it backs up like that alot now. We only went the once.
Indiana-- I may be getting to old for some of these jerky rides. I used to love it and this trip I just found it dark and depressing. Wish the Indiana figures looked better and you could actually understand what he says.
Haunted Mansion-- turns out my dd loves it which I didn't know. We rode this several times throughout the trip. It never seemed to have a wait of more than a minute or two to get on an elevator.
Splash Mountain-- completely skipped this. One bad experience with chafing years ago after getting soaked was enough to convince me some things in life just aren't worth it.
Winnie the Pooh-- I don't know why but this is another ride that just brings a smile to my face. We actually did meet and greets here one day and all the interactions were fun and good.
Canoes-- ok if you have thought of doing the canoes and not done it because you were afraid it would be to much work go do it! It was a lot of fun and after years of wondering we were passing by when the cm's were saying there was no line so we went. Well worth it!
Fantasyland consistantly had low wait times except for Peter Pan which hovered around 30 or 40 minutes our whole trip. To me 30 minutes is a good wait time for Pan. Most rides here we walked onto as many times as we wanted with very minimal waits. I think Alice was our next longest wait and that was 10, maybe 15 minutes when we hit it.
Once on the teacups we didn't even get off because there weren't many people in line. There were still 3 cups empty after everyone got on.
Tangled show at the little theatre was fun. My dd who is really into theatre loved it. I think we both enjoyed it more than the Frozen show even though it is a very different style of show.
Toontown was pretty empty when we went shortly after it opened one morning. We were the first on Roger Rabbit as it had just opened. We had fun doing all the stuff around the gag factory and then backed out of seeing Mickey after waiting in what was supposed to be a 10 line for at least 10 minutes. No one had gotten to go in and we were towards the back so we bailed. Went and rode the little coaster twice without getting off. I found it funner than space mountain even though it is super short. Strange I know.
Disneyland Food
After years of wanting to try the monte cristo and pomme frites we finally went to Cafe Orleans and did it. I liked the sandwich although from pictures I expected it to be much bigger and have more cheese. DD and I shared and guess her half did have alot of cheese so maybe it gravitated to one section. She was underwhelmed by the sandwich, probably because everyone says it is to die for and it was just ok. She loved the pomme frites and I thought they were mediocre. I think the first couple I had must have been from an old batch of fries because when I ate some from another part of the basket they were better but the initial impression just wouldn't leave. We were glad to have finally tried both items and was very pleased with the service.
Raspberry macaron at Jolly Holiday was super good the first time but on our last night it hardly had any of the cream filling stuff and was just not as good. It was a bummer as our last treat of the trip. I guess it was my fault for still buying it when I could tell the filling was practically non existent. We tried the Matterhorn Macaroon earlier in the trip as well and it was a lot different than what I imagined. Drier than I expected but another item I've alwasy wanted to try and happy we did so.
We had a corn dog and fries and the strawberry cheesecake funnel cake which I thought was delicious. Yum. The corn dog was eh which I thought was weird because I remember loving them on other trips. Maybe the funnel cake was just yummier to me at the time.
We had the citrus chicken at Rancho and neither of us were impressed. The chicken was dry and the rice was to spicy for me to eat at all which was unexpected. Granted I am a total spicy wimp but still I can usually handle mexican rice.
We also had the chicken meal at French Market which we have had many times before. They were out of gravy which was sad and the chicken was once again dry. To some degree I understand because it was later at night but it was still disappointing.
I can't think what else we ate in the parks although there probably was more. DCA food was much better than Disneyland food for us this trip and the treats were the highlights.
Overall we had a wonderful trip and felt blessed with low crowds for the most part and were able to do pretty much everything we wanted to without waiting in long lines. We took afternoon breaks each day and just felt pretty relaxed and stress free while at the parks. We did a ton of pin trading as well as just taking our time and soaking in the atmosphere. I will say that five days in the parks is still very physically exhausting but so much fun and this trip was special with just the two of us. Who knows when we will ever be back so until then thanks for the memories.
This kind of turned into more of a mini trip report but thanks to those who hung in. I'll be happy to answer any questions about the parks if I can. Enjoy life and find the magic no matter where you are.
