Ontario March Break 2020

Two years ago our school calendar was published around May 9. The board website says that it is usually published in late May after approval from the board and the ministry. We are west of the GTA.

I assume these dates are good? We have a refundable cruise booked but flights open soon so planning on booking. I noticed that the March break shifted a week later starting 2020.

Hi Hon
I am using the March 16-March 20 2020 dates listed.(I also plan on booking airfare soon).,,,to be sure I would check with your local school board,,even the Ministry Of Education advises to check with individual boards.
Regards
Mel

The Halton school boards (Ontario) just approved the 2019-2020 calendar.
March break will be March 16-20. They do note changes can still be made during the summer, but I doubt it.

Yay! Good catch. I haven't even gotten an email from the board, yet and you found it. Thanks.

No March Break PA day, but at least I'm not having to move my cruise. :)

Hi again, WestJet has flights out to Wed March 11/20. As usual the calendar is "frozen". I wish they would have release dates like some other airlines.

I noticed this...and remember from last year too. Very frustrating.
It's strange too as tend to buy airline from Expedia for the points. Expedia "offers" WestJet for March break dates (and these are the best prices) but if you select one of their flights, then Expedia shows an error. No idea why they show WestJet and where the amount comes from.

Thanks for keeping us updated about the flights! My mom just booked us on a March Break cruise (our first non-Disney, the horror!), so we'll need flights now...

Is it just me or are flights crazy expensive? We don't need for this year, but next March break we'll need to fly to Orlando (also for a non-Disney cruise) so I'm monitoring prices for this year to get an idea. I'm getting a return cost of $4800 for 4 of us (and those are using not ideal flight times). Is that normal? The main bottleneck seems to be the return flight home as I did not one-way near opening day costing about $1200 . Hopefully Westjet has better prices once they release!

I found the same problem last year. We just drove for less than half the price, including the rental car (from Toronto), hotels, gas and food. Sure, more vacation days used up, but worth it.

From Toronto too. :dogdance: Don't blame you at all for driving instead. Unfortunately I have a bad back and can't sit that long so it's not an option. We'll probably have to get creative and check either with stops or maybe a close airport "nearby" will work out better?

That would be aweful. DH has some back trouble, but we can go about 10 hours, if he takes breaks (like food and gas) to stretch. The prices with stops can be better and, well, if you were driving, it would be longer, so even having that whole day dedicated to flying is a bonus, but then, if you're buying seats, you have to pay more than once. I don't know if you have to pay for bags for each leg or not. They've got you coming and going for sure.

I'm still going to check Buffalo when the fares come out to see if that would be worth it.

Buffalo is a good option too. Guess you need to wait for a bit for those to be released. There is Detroit too if you don't mind driving a bit further to catch a flight (which is a shorter drive than to Orlando).

Also, it's hard to know whether to jump on opening day. For example...Toronto to Orlando (one way) ...early morning flight on Delta...was $1179 on opening day (Apr 19). Today that same flight is $2739. Or the cheapest morning flight today on AC is 2315. Huge difference.
Unfortunately I missed capturing opening flights for the return flight to see if same kind of numbers. But basically if you purchase one way on opening day, then you rule out any options of going out of Buffalo or Detroit. (i.e. somewhere where you have to drive and leave your car).

Good luck. Hope Buffalo works or WestJet once they release. And if not, you have your backup of driving.

PS - I notice that if you don't mind returning on Mon Mar 23, then its more reasonable (still a lot but better than the Sat or Sun)

If you are taking a non-Disney cruise then I certainly wouldn't fly into Orlando at March break. Orlando is inland and there are major airports much closer to the cruise ports along the coast that will have better rates. FLL or MIA come to mind depending on your departure port.

DTW knows when we have March break, but if you're willing to fly budget (Spirit), then you can get under 400$ USD return per person.

@Frozen2014 - Very true about flying out on Mon. A few years ago, we flew in on Wed, cruised, then took the Mon (following week) flight home. But, that meant hotel for Wed, Thurs, Fri before cruise and Sat and Sun after cruise. It also meant food, a rental car and entertainment (Kennedy and a day at MK). So while we enjoyed it all thoroughly, in hindsight, it would have been cheaper to pay the higher airfare than to cruise and end up with a land vacation, as well. And while we loved the Contemporary for one night (my one and only chance at an on-site stay), it was expensive!

Non-Disney cruise but it's out of Port Canaveral. But we'd definitely look at other airports in the area.
