Countdown to the end of the school year!

Can’t wait. June 14th. We’re in countdown mode. It’s the last year for MS for 1 and the other is halfway done with HS.

DS18 is a senior this year and finished on 5/17 because he doesn't have to take any finals, but school doesn't let out until 5/24. Graduation on 5/25. I'm a school secretary and I work all summer, but shorter hours and no kids!

HS graduation is June 26th. Ds21 should be home from college in a couple of weeks, evicting dd22 from his bedroom, she’ll move in with dd18 until she gets an apartment by her job around September. Ds21 has an internship in manhattan this summer, he’ll need to be on the bus at 6 am, so that should be interesting. There is a local stop he can walk to from our house in two minutes but it’s a local and takes longer than an express (that he will need a ride to, 5 minutes but it's 6 am!). Dd16 and ds16 can enjoy sleeping until varsity soccer starts the second week in August, the girls varsity coach has practices at 6:45 am, boys are around 9. No August xc practices for dd18 anymore.

Today was the last week of classes at UMaine. Next week is finals. I will take the upcoming Monday and Tuesday as vacation days, but have to proctor a final on Wed morning and then spend the rest of Wed. grading exams. Thur and Fri will be dedicated to getting the labs set up for summer session, which starts on May 13. We are running a crazy schedule for organic chem this summer; we are teaching the entire course in 4 weeks! Lecture is 9-noon, Mon-Thur, with Friday exams. Three labs a week from 1-5pm; I'm in charge of the labs. As soon as O-chem 1 is finished, we'll do 4 weeks of o-chem2, same schedule... and DD is getting married smack-dab in the middle of all this (and I am taking a week off... I'll come back to a MOUNTAIN of grading)! The whole schedule is giving me hives, just thinking about it, but the up-side is, I'll be done teaching for the summer on July 3rd, and classes won't resume until after Labor Day!

This is the first year that in our district that both the kids and teachers are out before Memorial Day. The teachers always had to go back for two days for meetings and cleanup. This year the kids' last day is the Wednesday before and the teachers the Friday before. Then my busy time starts as I watch my 9 & 13 year old nieces and 11 year old nephew. During June I will actually only have DN9 as DN11 will have summer school until noon and DN13 is in a Focus Program that doesn't get out until the end of June. DN11 has learning disabilities so I have workbooks for both him and his sister, DN9. When DN13 is here she helps DN11 with his math as a review for her. DN13 is an only child and really doesn't need a "babysitter" but isn't quite ready to be home all day every day by herself. She will walk down the street to my house after she gets up and gets ready. We signed up for Kids Bowl Free and will bowl once a week, go to the library once a week and join the pool so they can swim a couple of time a week. Plus DN13 is getting a puppy tomorrow so guess who will be puppy sitting also! I'll have her starting Monday until DN13 gets home from school. The puppy should keep her from sleeping all day once shes out for the summer!

It depends what you're used to . School here has always been from after Labor Day until the end of June. I think of summer as July and August. So for me I think it's strange that some kids start school in August. LOL

That's a short summer break! We get just under 3 months. May 24 is our last day and we return August 20 next year.

I’m a teacher and am ready for this year to be over! Our state testing finished up earlier this week and the students are so done. Our last day is June 7th. I’m starting to see light at the end of the tunnel.

On a personal note, my semester of grad classes ended two weeks ago and I have so much more time in the evenings to do things other than grad work. I’m taking two classes this summer, both week long classes, so I know the work will be vigorous, but I can handle it knowing that at the end of the week, I’ve earned three more credits.

The kids get on average 76 days in our district. A far cry from the 104 days Phineas and Ferb get.

My daughter texted me all excited a few weeks ago. She had figured out she has exactly 104 days of summer vacation this year between college years.

We usually get out end of May. Thanks to the enormous amounts of snow days used we’re into the first week of June until we are done. And we didn’t get a spring break and lost most of our days throughout the year. I’m ready to be done and DS is very much ready to be done. I told him every snow day he’d regret getting excited about them later. :confused3

Technically our last day is June 26th. My kids are all in HS and MS and will probably be done a week or two before that.

That was the schedule here in California when I was in school (1962 to 1975). Day after Labor Day until the end of June. They "shifted" everything earlier so that first semester finals are now the week before Christmas break instead of the end of January. THAT does make sense since having 2 weeks off tended to cause kids to forget what they learned right before finals.
They have also changed Thanksgiving break from Thursday and Friday off, to the whole week off. And President's Day off, is now a whole week off. And every Thursday is a half day for students, the afternoon on those days is set aside for Teacher Prep and in-service training.

I think my wife would stab herself in the eyes if I told her school went until June 28th.
And a lot of parents are stabbing themselves in the eyes because school is out so early now!

All I can think of is the Staples Ad for their BACK to school sales......."The Most Wonderful Time of Year"

My son finished his last day of high school yesterday. My middle schooler is done in two weeks. I can't wait for summer.

Mine have 4 weeks left. The kids are excited for summer. They’ll be in camp. I work full time so summer really doesn’t make much of a difference for me. I still have to wake up early. Traffic is lighter though.

This year the break is 78 days, which is around the usual for us. There are 180 school days.

I didn't mean to sound snarky, if I did. Our state has switched to hours and I don't remember what the # of required hours is, but the school I work (private school) for still uses the same calendar and we go 180 days also. It must be the difference in the breaks during the year.
