Living with alligators

This was the subject line of an email I just got from our CDD. Apparently people have been calling them complaining about seeing alligators roaming our neighborhood. We sometimes see them in the retention ponds but don't often see them come out. Of course, everybody knows never to let a pet out unleashed (we have no stray pet problems here).

The CDD says that May is alligator mating season and the males come out of their respective ponds to look for a mate. Apparently we just have to sit tight until mating season is over.

I'm probably being overprotective but for the rest of the school year (all two weeks of it) I'll be driving my son in rather than having him ride his bike.

I've had a place and raise children along lakes and canals in Florida for many many years and not once was this a worry for me or never voiced by anyone I know.

Yeah, I've lived in Florida for over 18 years now, often along canals or retention ponds, and have never worried. We've lived in this community for six years and we've never heard anybody express concern about the alligators. I'm kind of an out of sight, out of mind kind of person, and while I know the gators are there, I don't worry about them. But when people start complaining to the point that the community sends out an email, it puts them "in my mind," and I get a little nervous even though I know there's no reason to be.

Although to be honest, the love bugs are bothering me more than the threat of alligators. They seem to be particularly bad this year.

I had a to-go cup of coffee in the car this morning that I'd picked up when I got my oil changed. When I got to the bottom, there was something solid there. It was a love bug, or a "couple," I should say. It didn't quite go in my mouth--it was stopped by the hole in the plastic lid--but it came close.
