Everthing you wanted to know about Uber/Lyft at WDW

So if I'm leaving a Halloween party after midnight, and walk to the Contemporary, I'll be able to get an Uber even if I'm staying off property? I think we'll be too tired to trek to the TTC if we don't have to!
Yes. Uber or Lyft can pick up or drop off anywhere that is open to public traffic. And they don't care where you are staying or where you are going.

I'm not awake yet, but I'm confused. If you are at the Magic Kingdom, can you walk to the Transportation & Ticket Center? I thought you had to either take the monorail or take the ferry.
No, you're awake :D
The person I quoted seemed to be referring to the actual length of the walk. Tapstiles to monorail to TTC requires fewer actual steps than walking to the Contemporary.

We will be using Uber to get from the Sapphire Falls Resort at Universal to MCO (Southwest). How long before our flight should we arrange for a ride? Our flight is Thursday at 1:15 the first week in September. I have only done Uber once in Colorado. The app said it would be 45 minutes for someone to pick us up, and the ride was there in less than 10 minutes (and we weren't there waiting yet). How long does it usually take in the Orlando area?

I can't imagine a pickup time of 45 minutes! There is absolutely no way a driver could make a profit on a ride with even a 20 minute pickup.

Here in Miami, most drivers won't take a pickup more than 7-8 minutes away. I think Orlando is a little different, because I hear a lot of 10 minute pickup remarks, but even so pickup should be quick.

Katieeldr's suggestion about not ordering the ride until you are ready to actually load is perfect. If you're not ready on time, both Uber and Lyft send the driver a message to cancel and move on to other waiting rides -- and you get hit with a cancellation fee.

Thanks for the information Kaytieeldr and JimMIA. We were going to a wedding in Colorado, so we kept checking the app to see how far out we needed to request a ride to get there on time. I was surprised because I didn't think it should take that long either, but it was our first time using Uber so we went with it. We did get hit with a cancellation fee, which didn't seem right because it said 45 minutes when we requested the ride...oh well, live and learn!

So we will request a ride 2.5 hours before our flight from the hotel lobby. Easy enough, glad I asked!

My 13yr old daughter and I will be in Disney next summer. The plan is to use DME from the airport and Disney buses to the parks. However, I'm considering scheduling a dinner at the Poly on our arrival night. We're staying at AKL Jambo, so I've been considering Uber/Lyft to avoid busing to MK and then transferring over to the Poly. I've never used Uber or Lyft (we live in a quite rural area); and after reading through about 50 of this thread's pages, I'm getting the vibe that it may be worth paying the extra for a Minnie Van simply for peace of mind in avoiding a list of problems such as drivers not knowing where they are going, not speaking English, and just overall sketchy-ness with ride sharing in general. But, because I'm not entirely sure...are Minnie Van drivers Disney cast members? Are they more knowledgeable in getting around Disney property? Is there generally a higher level of quality with the higher fare? I'm not opposed to using Disney transit for that AKL to Poly trek...I'm just not sure we'll have the extra time.

...are Minnie Van drivers Disney cast members?
Yes.
Are they more knowledgeable in getting around Disney property?
Probably yes.

In addition, in certain circumstances, MinnieVans can go where rideshare cannot. Rideshare can take you anywhere public traffic is allowed, but they cannot go places which are restricted only to Disney employees/vehicles. The most important of those is MK, where they can take you to the bus terminal right at MK.
Is there generally a higher level of quality with the higher fare?
Probably.

I drive for both Uber and Lyft in Miami, and I use Uber everywhere I travel, but your reservations are by no means unusual.

I am confident your Uber ride at WDW would be fine -- you should have a newish, nice, CLEAN car and a safe ride from A to B. You will also have a driver who has passed a very rigorous background investigation, and in the case of Uber, continuous background monitoring. Your ride will be double-tracked in real time, and you will have the ability to share the ride progress in real time with trusted family or friends (true also of MinnieVan)

You might have a driver whose English skills are marginal. The Orlando market has a lot of drivers who have fled Puerto Rico (hurricane) and Venezuela (political turmoil, starvation, etc). That doesn't make them bad drivers, but it can make communication challenging. That said, they will be following their GPS and should not have a problem.

Is it worth it?

I just checked AKV to Poly on the Uber rider app and the Uber X fare (up to 4 passengers) was a little less than $11.

MinnieVan pricing is $15 + $2.75 per mile. The trip is 6.6 miles, so the approximate MV fare (for up to 6 passengers) would be $33.15.

Minnie Van drivers are Disney CMs. Many, many Lyft/Über drivers in the WDW area are also Disney CMs, just driving on their own time.

Therefore, the bulk of rideshare drivers can reasonably be expected to know their way around Disney property. Drivers also have the advantages of up to date GPS, along with excellent signage.

I have not used a Minnie Van, but all my Lyft drivers have been excellent.

Am I correct in assuming that Minnie Vans, at large resorts like OKW, will pick you up in front of your building, and not at the check-in area, since the buildings show on the map? I have a group of 5 going to 1900 Park Fare for breakfast, and that would make it a lot more convenient to do a minnie van, if they come to our building.

Either MV or rideshare can pick you up at your building at OKW. Rideshare can go anywhere the public can go, and that's everywhere at OKW.

Can I ask a general Uber/Lyft question that is not WDW related here? If not Jim may I PM you?

Probably better to post it here because if it's occurred to you, others have probably wondered about it as well. Or you can always PM me.

Will Uber/Lyft pick you up at your building at Port Orleans Riverside if you request your ride while standing near your bldg.?

I'm not that familiar with POR, but Uber and Lyft can pick up anywhere public traffic is allowed. So if you can park next to your building, Uber/Lyft can go there.

Yes they will. We experienced this when staying there.

Similarly, when we stayed at Caribbean Beach, they came right to our building.

Be sure to stay where you order the ride so they can find you easily. And expect them within 5 minutes usually!
