I conducted a mini poll with my family last night at dinner.

Over dinner I asked if schools should teach Arabic numerals?
My wife immediately answered sure why not, not knowing what Arabic numerals are.
My son and daughter both looked at each other and answered yes. They both knew they had already been taught Arabic numerals.
My father in law answered why, then quickly followed up with an emphatic no. The kids (16 and 19) explained that the numbers we use are Arabic numerals and asked why he seemed to be dead set on no. He got flustered and would not answer so we changed the subject. It would appear that bigotry/racism may play into some answers of no.

I don't think anyone is stupid because they don't know what something is. That is perfectly fine. No one knows everything.

What I do think is ignorant is offering an opinion on something that you don't know anything about.

If you don't even know what the question is asking, then you don't give a definitive "yes" or "no" answer. You acknowledge that you don't know and therefore don't have an opinion. You don't make an assumption based on zero knowledge and then respond "absolutely not, no one should be taught about that".
But you're forgetting (or ignoring) that people THINK they DO know. Think about all the people who get song lyrics messed up. They THINK they know the lyrics, but they don't.

But thinking you do KNOW something when you DON'T is the definition of ignorance.

So I guess you're ignorant? Because the definition is simply: "lack of knowledge or information". It has nothing to do with thinking you know something when you don't. I think you just proved my point.

The term “racist “ gets thrown around on these boards very cavalierly. Almost as frequently as on cable news and late night TV.

No, the term racist is used more frequently lately because many who used to hide their racism seem to feel more comfortable showing it. Thank goodness there are people willing to stand agaist it and call it out.

Why is it that you feel are more comfortable showing it?

Totally disagree. To me it’s modern McCarthyism. And I’m sure now someone will “bravely” label me a racist, without knowing one damn thing about me.

That is not the full definition, awareness is ALSO part of the definition. I am fully aware that I don't KNOW everything, if I am unsure of something I am willing to admit that before offering an answer on something like the poll in question.https://www.google.com/search?q=ign...hrome.0.0l6.5595j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

OK. I left out a word. Still doesn't include "thinking you know something when you don't" which is what you claimed was the actual definition. So you incorrectly thought you knew something. You were confident enough to make a statement like a fact when it's not. Which proves my point... there are times you think you know something, are confident that you know it, but are actually wrong. So if you're confident that you know the answer, why would you not answer a question? Because you might be wrong?
