Parents of the Class of 2019

How big are these classes that just have one day of grad practice? DS has around 400 kids in his and they have four days (half days) of grad practice!

DS's class is 576. Their grad practice is only a few hours long and is not even in the real venue. (The practice is in the high school's auxiliary gym. The ceremony is in the basketball arena at Ohio State.) They practice tomrrow from 9:30am-noon and graduation is Sunday. Parents with older students have told me that graduation "runs like clockwork" so hopefully that's all the practice they need.

Seniors in DD's school had their Sunset celebration last night. They brought in food trucks and had a bonfire. Since she didn't come home until after I went to bed, I'm assuming she had a great time. Of course, she worked the open shift at the rec center today so was gone when I came out to leave for work (at 5:30) so I kind of freaked out thinking that maybe she never came home. Nope, she did, she was at work.

Our seniors have checkout day tomorrow, they need to get sign off from all of their current teachers, the library, athletic director, and transportation secretary to make sure all fees are paid and grades for needed classes are good to graduate. They'll have graduation practice next Tuesday and the ceremony is Friday at 6:00pm! It's so close now!

I think I heard someone say the graduating class this year is 182 students.

My younger son's incoming freshman class next year is 218, I believe, so they're growing a little. On average, class sizes have always been around 200.

DD's class is 54. Our rural area is shrinking, they started out around 70.

Yesterday after grad practice she picked me up from work and we had a Subway picnic lunch at the lake! Today she is home for most of the day for the first time in a LONG time, until it's time for her soccer game. She is working on thank you notes and washing dishes :) Hopefully by early next week she'll find out if she got the job she applied for, and if not, job hunt will be number one priority.

DS's class is "370-something, maybe, I think" - I just asked him, and that was his response ) and they have two mandatory two-hour rehearsals, plus some sort of parade through the elementary school that is also mandatory.

When I went to college oh-so-many years ago, I was in the Honors program and the Honors dorm. I thought that everyone in the Honors dorm would also be in the Honors program, as it was presented as one of the perks of the program. However, I was mistaken. Of the 4 girls in my room, only two of us were Honors students. The 3rd girl was placed because she and the other Honors girl requested to be roommates. (They were from the same hometown. Girl #3 ended up being my favorite roommate.) I have no idea how Girl #4 ended up being placed. She was not an honors student, but she *was* crazy. If she made the kind of threats today that she did then, I'm sure she'd be expelled at minimum, and possibly even arrested. Back then, they just said "I'm sure she doesn't really MEAN that, and it's not nice of the 3 of you to gang up on her like this." when we reported it to the RA, Resident Director, and Student life. It was a nightmare.

My son applied to the Honors program at his college but did not get accepted. However, you don't have to be in the Honors program to be in the Honors dorm/community. Actual Honors students get priority, but if there's extra room, anybody who requests the Honors LLC can get in. I have also heard that the Honors LLC is usually in one of the nicest dorms. I urged my son to request it, and I think he was planning to, but his roommate was not on board. Both roommates have to make the same LLC requests, so he did not choose honors. I'd rather him live with someone he knows isn't crazy than "chance it," even for the Honors dorm.

Anyway, I hope it all works out splendidly for everyone... but it is very possible that everyone in the Honors dorm will *not* be an Honors student (and maybe not even the people in your hallway, floor, or room). That has been my experience anyway.

DD’s dorm is not exclusive to Honors kids, but all the honors kids are in that dorm. It’s primarily older kids as it’s one of the preferred dorms.

Graduation in 2.5 hours........

Senior awards were tonight. Proud that my son got one. It tends to be a revolving stage of the same three kids. While my son is a high performer, he usually isn't the top. Graduation practice is tomorrow afternoon from 3-5. Graduation is on Saturday. I've overwhelmed with emotions. We have a lot going on. Not only graduation this weekend but my youngest is having his promotion ceremony Tuesday morning. On to high school. He has been at the same school since K. My last day of work is next Friday and next Saturday we are picking up and moving 500 miles away. I'm trying to be excited but...

DD's entire class is around 350, I believe (only 87 in IB program). They have an hour and half for grad practice, then DD and about 45 other kids have to race across town for their first Spanish IB test. She still has 2 Spanish IB tests and 2 French IB tests next week, with Convocation (IB graduation essentially) a mere 5 hours after her final test (let's cut it close, why don't we?). The IB kids are exhausted--finals, APs, then most have 10 IB tests-and insult to injury, some AP tests are rescheduled to after graduation since they conflicted with IB testing. I am not a fan of the program, if I have been too subtle. That said, all of DD's friends and acquaintances feel very prepared for university so I guess that's good since I'm paying for that.

Congrats to all who will have graduates this weekend! The end is in sight:)

So, who's starting to stock up on things for college? To those of you that have kids away at college already, what are some helpful things to bring that perhaps you didn't remember the first time?
I just ordered a bunch of blue ikea bags for Dd. I always meant to with the others, but forgot, we rolled up with hefty bags. It appears dd’s school has a pretty organized move in like we experienced at Rutgers, but everything has to be labeled, so our usual shoving stuff into crevices in the minivan might not work well.

Bring water, pen and paper, you will be placing an amazon order on your way home. Command strips, and stuff for the walls, and a door stop (to make it easy for other students to pop in, they will).

ETA, you really don’t want to stock up on much because there is little room, but make sure to get a whole giant pharmacy of meds. My kids’ first year of college reminded me of when they started preschool, always sick, and at the worst times. Find out where the best off campus urgent care is now.

I was wondering about drinking water. My DS drinks a TON of water. Do they have to bring bottled water, or can they use a BRITA bottle and just fill it in the bathrooms?

DS does too, but his school makes a big deal of how environmentally responsible they are, so I'm expecting it to be pretty convenient for students to use refillable bottles.
