Class of 2021 Parents

DS’s return date from his exchange year has been set – I will get to see his handsome, smiling face in person again in mid-July! I am going to completely lose it when I see him again!!! He thoroughly enjoyed his summer break down there (Dec-Feb), though his GF left for college as soon as classes started back up earlier this month. They will see each other over Easter and then just before he comes back to the U.S. Ahhh, young love. I’ll have to refamiliarize myself with the permit and driving laws here, as I’m sure he will want to get his license as soon as possible after he returns. He’ll have about a week and a half at home before soccer pre-season camp begins and then two weeks later junior year will start. We told him to stay in country as long as he can because he will never have this specific experience again. He gladly took us up on the suggestion!

I've somehow missed this thread! We were so happy to end 9th grade (DD suffered a concussion, missed lots of school, catching up with assignments was difficult, etc.) and can't believe we are now setting our sights on the end of 10th! DD has been driving most of the year (she has an earlier bday). Driving laws are so different, it seems from what I read here. She took 1 AP class this year (World History) and will do some dual enrollment/AP courses next year.

We are already talking about colleges and majors. She thought she wanted to be an industrial engineer but lately has changed her mind due to some experience on the production side of theater/live entertainment. We will see!

How's everyone doing? Winding down sophomore year, my DD's last day isn't until June 13, but I know a lot of southern schools get out soon.

We get out June 26th. Dd has an AP Stat exam on Thursday, plus a county track meet, running the 100, 200, 400 and 4 x 4, and might miss the 100. Why schedule a HS track meet the same day as AP tests? Her twin brother’s track season has ended, dd16 and dd18 will most likely make it to groups (their 4 x 4 just broke the school record). Ds leads his club soccer team in goals though.

Awesome!!! And that sucks about the scheduling conflict!! ughh
DD just finished with track too, she's glad because she's also doing a travel basketball team, and it's A LOT! lol

Yes, it can be hectic, both Dd and ds are on a town soccer team and a club soccer team, she will miss a game on Thursday because of the meet. Not too many conflicts since track is after school and soccer practices are at 7:45/9 for her and 8:30/9 for him (dd’s soccer practices are unfortunately the same day and field in town, 3 practices a day are brutal), ds’s club practices are a half hour away. Dd also works at a garden center on days with no sports, and it’s peak season. She wants the money though!

Well I get that she wants the money for sure!! LOL
Makes me glad I only have 1 kid, for all that running around. It has helped that she's driving now, she goes to practice by herself now. So I can actually get stuff done at home. haha

DD has finals next week, with last day on the 24th. She will do a PSAT prep class in early June. Then she has two camps plus a national youth gathering and a mission trip to Guatemala this summer, then right into volleyball in August. I’m already getting teary thinking about junior year coming up. We’ve done three college visits and have a few more to do over the next year, but she is really liking my alma mater (Mizzou). We need to edit recruitment videos in the next few weeks and she will start reaching out to coaches.

I'll be glad when AP exams are over!

School for us ends 6/13. Normally it's earlier, but Hurricane Florence mucked everything up (they missed 3 weeks of school).

We have a cello recital coming up, and dance performances of "Midsummer Night's Dream". And DD needs new pointe shoes, and has a few other dance obligations.

On the good side, she turned 16 last week. She signed herself up for driver's ed., and has been applying for jobs. We're looking at getting a cheap "beach car"--not exclusively for her, but something old and 4-wheel drive. We live coastal, and yu can drive on the beach with a permit, which is nice, but you need 4-wheel drive (DH's all-wheel drive doesn't cut it). She was thrilled to hear she'd be able to drive even a crappy car!

School ends late next week for us. Both of his AP tests (AP Euro and AP Chem) were last week, so the hard stuff is pretty much over with. He already received his summer assignments for two of his AP classes next year. In his junior year, he'll be taking 4 AP classes and 3 honors classes. He's foregoing a study hall for the extra honors class (Organic Chemistry) which I'm not sure is the best idea. He says he never did homework and just talked during study hall anyway. Whatever, I just don't want him to get overwhelmed with that and other stuff.

He talks about getting a job, but honestly, I just don't see how he could have the time. He got his driver's license a couple of months ago and takes one of our cars sometimes, but he probably won't have his own car until September or October.

They took a practice ACT again in March and they finally got their results/report and he did amazingly well. Let's just hope it translates to the PSAT next fall (he takes it every year anyway, but this fall is the one that actually counts).

Well, guys, the HS journey is halfway over. So hard to believe!

Exams start today, and school is out next Thursday. We've had an end of year band banquet and awards day over the past week, and she took the AP US History exam last week. All of the sophomores and juniors take the ACT during the school day at her school, and she did pretty well. I at least don't have to worry about her getting into any school in our state.

She has NO summer plans other than band camp, though I just got a babysitting offer that I need to pass along to her. This will be the first summer in a while that she hasn't volunteered at the zoo, so it should be more relaxing. She will also be getting her license in July, FINALLY (you have to hold a permit for a year, and she delayed getting her permit).

We did a tour for Mizzou a few weeks ago. We loved the campus and the programs there. DD has been looking up the marching mizzou because she wants to do marching band in college. We have a visit with University of Kansas on July 5th.

DD has been doing good and ready for the sophomore year to be over. Her last day is May 24th and it is a half day. Today is graduation day for the seniors so she is at graduation tonight with the choir and marching band.

We visited Mizzou a few weeks ago. Loved the campus. We visit Univ. of Kansas in July to tour the campus. We have a few other schools to visit. I'm trying to schedule on her days off next school year.

We have a busy summer coming up.

How was everyone's summer? I cannot believe that it is August and our HS's 'check-in' was today. Schedule complete, ID photo taken, registration and athletic fees paid! DS came back from his exchange year two weeks ago and slid right into soccer pre-season camp and hanging out with friends. He hopes to make varsity this year, though his run time is not the best after coming to altitude after being at sea level for so long! But he's getting better everyday as they practice. We're getting driving hours in and he is doing well with that. Here's a direct quote: "Not much has changed here at home, except all my friends have cars now." School starts on August 12!

Summer is going well for DD, we don't start back until the day after Labor Day, so still a month away. She has been hanging with friends, helping her AAU basketball coach run a basketball camp this week. She's been driving all over, no friends can drive with her yet though (provisional license) until after August 24, so she mostly meets them or goes to their houses.

We have parties every weekend from now until Labor Day, so she's spending time with family and cousins(she has about 6-8 around her age).

I also let her get a tattoo on her upper arm for an early 17th bday present. It's an infinity heart, that says family. People think I'm crazy for it. lol

Still a month to go! Dd has been busy with her part time job, babysitting, friends, new boyfriend, and is finishing up a week at the beach with 2 of her best friends. We are heading to the beach tomorrow for a week, might actually pick her up at a parkway rest stop. We are renting a house with the Chicago cousins, so she is very excited (and tan). Ds hasn’t worked much, volunteered for the HS soccer coach at soccer camps. Mostly just hanging with friends. Varsity soccer starts up for both of them the end of next week, ds has a tournament Friday and Saturday, so might leave the beach early (although the purpose is really for the coach to try out new players, so I don’t think it will be the end of the world if he doesn’t go). If anyone has any suggestions for a non fiction book, let me know!

Summer is over for us. School starts this coming Friday, Aug 16. My daughter just finished marching band camp. So our big marching season is just starting! My daughter will wrap up the summer with her last volunteer day at the zoo. She has been in the Junior Zookeeper program since fifth grade and is now a Master Junior Zookeeper. During the school year, she attends events at the zoo and helps out too, so it is not just a summer committment here.
I am looking at dates for more college visits. Fortunately, over the past couple of years we have had the opportunity to visit several already including: Northwestern, University of Illinois, Illinois State University, Ohio University, and Coastal Carolina.

First week of junior year is in the books! He has 3 AP classes and is also taking the auto tech class that he's wanted since 9th grade. He made the JV soccer squad, but realizes that he'll have more playing time there than he would on varsity. Seniors are not allowed on JV, so I guess he'll get bumped up next year regardless! All juniors at his school will take the PSAT for the NMSQT on a school day in late October. He will most likely sign up for the December ACT to get a baseline as well. Is anyone else doing the ACT this fall?

They cut freshman sports here last year, if juniors don’t make varsity they don’t play, but even before that rule, some seniors didn’t make varsity (in all sports, not just soccer). Soccer tryouts are in full swing, 7 - 10 six mornings a week for Dd, 8 - 11 for ds. They made varsity last year (ds starts every game, Dd warms the bench). I’ve got to get in touch with the SAT/ACT tutor, been so busy with dd18 heading to college Thursday. They will be taking the PSAT in October, dd16 did very well on the last one with no prep. My kids will definitely be taking the ACT as well, their siblings did better on it than the SAT, I think kids should take both.
