Greta Thunberg

It amazes me how threatened some people are by young power and wisdom. It's like they know they are wrong and yet have to dig in their heels and be idiots. Not saying that about anyone here, but in general.
I’m not one of the climate change denyer ppl, but what annoys me is the naivety. Nothing will change as long as $$$ is involved. I think she’ll get her 15 min of fame & then will be irrelevant. I will admit that I’m a very cynical/jaded person though. I was once had her save-the-world type ideation (not for climate change but other aspects of life), but the “real world” has a way of wearing most of us down.

Not necessarily. Rachel Carson wrote Silent Spring which was published in 1962. It had an enormous impact on the modern environmental movement. Even thought the moneyed interests were aligned against her she still had lasting impact that is continuing to be felt today.

Nothing will change unless people, like Greta, use their voices and fight for what they believe in.

So my thoughts on Greta, and this is coming from someone who lives in Germany, where this movement has been going on a long time ( Friday for Future)

She is an activist NOT an environmentalst. Big difference. One protests, cry and screams the other offers practical solutions.

This now young adult speaks from her heart but she does not make me "nervous" nor give me "Wisdom. I question not her, but those surrounding her. She has devlopmental issues ( autism not sure how you classify this, and was depressed at a xoung age( where I think she is easly misused. I find it hard that a child can convince parents to give up their careers for a cause unless there are some benefits. Her parents gave up their careers a she wanted them to stop flying. Activism today, like youtubing is also a career. I think her parents fall into this group. Activism is like youtubism.. it's a nice career while getting famous for it. The whole let's take a boat to the UN as airtravel is evil PR stunt made great news, but it was rarely reported that a crew of 6 were then FLOWN to NYC to sail back.

I think we would like to believe that those Memes of her and a certain head of state make grown men uncomfortable. I disagree, annoyed is more like it. She annoys much of Europe right now. Especially Germany. Sure you have kids who skip school Fridays, ( after being dropped up by their SUV driven parents) but she offers no practical solution to the problem. There are 100s of other environmentalists working in 3rd world countries where most of the Co2 is being produced. and are not recongnized or get the PR. Greta and friends sit on nice, clean european city squares and protest and there's cameras.

The only thing she did was bring up the issue even more in the press. Over here this has always been an ongoing topic and Germany is ahead of the game. This is where the backlash is now coming, extreme left politicans want more. Sure let's ban airtravel. ( millions of jobs) add a tax to gas/oil to heat your home (people have a hard time paying now) ,.. All the while while India and China are adding coal stacks.. Germany only contributes 2% I believe of their own Co2 by man made things.

I disagree she has wisdom.. " You have stolen my childhood" she screamed to the UN leaders.. oooookay... how was her childhood stolen. She grew up in Sweden, upper middleclass, fed, clean, warm. free education. If anyone stole anything it was her parents and others pushing this poor child who was not mentally/developly independent. If she wants to see children who have had their childhood's stolen. i suggest she make a visit to Syria as she needs to be educatied on stolen childhoods. And while she's at it, (might take a while as she needs to ride a bike), she should head more east and get the courage to protest in the Middle East (oil) and then bike even further to India/China ( coal), convince those guys to change and then maybe she might make a change.. Stop protesting to me. I have done enough.

:worship: So, so many excellent points here and like you, after further research, I no longer have any hard feelings towards this young person. If she even half-believes all she says, my heart goes out to her for how terrified she must feel. I hope somebody, somewhere behind the scenes is actually educating her on the real situation in various countries, the measures currently in place and technological advancements being made that will enable meaningful emissions reductions. She needs comforting in her (apparent) despair. :sad1: I also hope that parents everywhere whose children are being influenced by this movement are doing the same.

Turns out she was right.

Mosquitoes have developed a tolerance to DDT. It’s no longer effective in reducing the mosquito population spread of malaria.

She is an actress....reading a script, so I'll give her that. Wisdom? At that age? Without any substantive life experience, education or perspective? Nope.

Experience? It’s really not that hard to see the glaciers that are melting by where she lives, or hear about bee and bird populations dying, or about pipelines bursting and polluting.

Excellent point. And that is where for me personally these adult activists make me sick to my stomach. On a german TV show one activist stated “ we will all be dead in 30 yrs if we don‘t do anything“. Not true! Yes if we dont changes future generations will be affected but the earth will not be wiped out. No wonder kids sre depressed and freaked out if this is the story being told. They need to be educated that the western world has done sooo much to decrease c02. Quick google said in Germany since 1990 c02 declined 30%. I believe this. Little things like led lightbulbs using a fraction if energy or our home built energy effecient using a fraction to heat a home compared to older homes. I work for an airline. It’s in our interest to buy more fuel effecient planes. We did and saved billions in fuel.

the problem with the activism is it’s targeting the wrong nations and causing a Sense panic.
Extinction Rebellion this week had activists climb on the Tube in London during morning rush. A platform full of commuters took matters into their own hands and dragded them off the trains and attacked them. No surprise as these environmental activits targeted people using mass transportation that is electricity based? Doesn’t make sense does it?

I personally believe there is still a lot more work to be done concerning saving the planet. But we need sensible, reasonable and pragmatic solutions not fear mongering.

I don't know about that. Cities like Paris have put more attention on climate change and now, have seen a significant decrease in personal car ownership. Does that happen without mainstream discussion of the effects that cars have on the environment?

There's a lot of variables in coming up with solutions that will make an impact. My main hope is that people are accepting of small changes that might come together to create bigger solutions over time. Reducing emissions in urban areas is not a huge task (here in NYC, it was recently surprising to some that turning one street into a no-car zone went over well and has been working ideally), but people need to actually buy in for it to work.
