how much of a necessity is it to have a car where you live?

Necessary. Very limited public transportation. What we do have picks up at certain places to go to downtown Charlotte. There is not public transportation in my town to get from one side to the other. Most roads don't have sidewalks either. My neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks. I technically...

    Interview Questions

I don't have a problem with a candidate bringing in notes or jotting down notes. IMO it's best to jot down some key words from projects you've worked on or something specific you want to not forget to mention about your experience. Something you can see at a glance and trigger your memory.

How many miles a year do you drive?

Me- my daily car is 18 years and has around 91,000 so I drive ~5000/year. I work from home 2 days/week and when I got to the office it's less than a 10mi round trip commute. DH's car is the one we take a trips and such but since he retired he's prob in the same range as me.

Who Pays? A Going Out To Dinner Question….

If you're going to a reasonably priced restaurant I would plan to pick up the tab for everyone then follow the cues of the BF's Dad. If he tells the server to split the tab or insists on picking up for everyone then let it be.

Traveling overseas with elderly dad-is it safe?

We took my Mom to Spain, Italy, and France in 2022. She was 78. She had had surgery on both of her feet 2 years earlier. She didn't have any issues. DH and I went to Germany last year. When got back he had blood clots in his legs from the plane trip. We are traveling to Hawaii from SC in May...

S/O of What household chore do dread the most? thread. Do you have a cleaning person?

We've never had a housecleaner. In the early years it was due to money- if we had extra we preferred to spend it elsewhere. Now there is just 2 of us at home. DH is retired and I still work (2 days WFH, 3 in the office). He does most of the housecleaning now because he has the time during the week.

Gift ideas for 70 year old

We put my mother on our cellphone plan and pay that for her for birthdays/mother's day/Christmas etc. She said she would rather have that taken care of than more stuff. When my dad was still living I found someone to come out every other week and mow is yard. I did that for a couple of years...

Regional Phrases, funny expressions and Idioms

Yeah, growing up in small town SC, lunch was the noon time mean unless it was Sunday. Sunday dinner was right after church and the main meal of the day. Laundry Basket/Hamper

We have a divided laundry basket in the bedroom- one side darks and one side whites. When a side is full they get washed. They are taken out of the dryer, folded, and taken to the bedroom to be put away. We don't put them back in the hamper.

    Eating out

I would say $100-$200/month but there may be some months that are a little more. We typically either order take out or go out every other week. No set schedule or places. But even take out for dinner it $30-$40 for the 2 of us. Most of the time we get 2-3 meals each out of the take out.
