Looking for Suggestions for Places to Visit a Short(ish) Drive from State College, PA

You can visit Harrisburg. There is a park that has art installations along a walking trail for a few more weeks. Minor league baseball if you’re into that. There may be something interesting at the Farm Show complex. Raystown Lake near Huntington. Not many hotels that way, though. Juniata...

    Vacation/Trip Traditions

Enjoy your birthday trip! I had one scheduled for that birthday but it fell during summer of 2020 and it didn’t happen. I’m hoping to do it for my double nickels birthday. My kids and I travel very well together and tend to have a good time. No real traditions although when we road trip, there...

The Final Frontier (An Alaska Trip Report - UPDATED 4/25)

I just loved your wrap up post! I’ve been following along for quite a while although not a regular commenter. It’s been fun seeing all the places you go and watching everyone grow up. My kids are 17, 19, and 21 and they are the best travel companions. Between Covid and other life events, we...

    Traveling to Pittsburgh - Suggestions?

We love Pittsburgh and have been several times. We’ve been to nearly everything mentioned and would like to add the Warhol museum and Bicycle Heaven as well. Driving in Pittsburgh can be a challenge. It’s very easy to be in the wrong lane and end up on a bridge going a direction you don’t want...

Who does the vacation, date night, etc planning in your relationship?

When I was married, I planned it all and it was an area of contention for me. Now I travel with my kids when I can (they are 17, 19, and 21), and I make reservations and say these are the things I’d like to do and I leave room for suggestions from them and spontaneity.

Cedar Point & Other Parks News/Discussion Thread

My son works at cedar point so we make an annual trip there. This year we are hoping to make it to Busch Gardens in Williamsburg to check out their new coaster. We still haven’t made it Holiday World yet…

How did you deal with Empty Nest Syndrome?

I’m a single parent and my nest will empty within the next year. My 21 year old moves out this fall, my 18 year old will be off to college in January, and next august my youngest will go off to college. I have a great circle of friends and have begun finding things to do solo. I also have a...

Ideas for Pittsburgh Pa trip ideas

We love Pittsburgh but I hate driving there! Someone mentioned the nationality rooms at University of Pittsburgh. Very cool tour. I liked the Warhol museum. The Carnegie science museum is good, as well. Didn’t really care for the aviary. We also loved Bicycle Heaven and RandyLand.

    Vacations this summer

No traveling last summer or this summer. I had a Labor Day getaway in my mind, but I’m not so sure right now.

The Final Frontier (An Alaska Trip Report - UPDATED 4/25)

Hooray for Alaska! I’ve been following the Oblivious adventures for a while and I wondered if this was going to be the year. The packing system is genius! I read somewhere that you should always mix people’s clothes in bags so that if one goes missing, you don’t need to buy a whole wardrobe...

    Bucket Lists

My travel list is always evolving, but I do have an astronomical bucket list of things I’d like to observe in the sky.

What was something you let someone borrow and never got back?

I don’t loan money, but I do give it from time to time. One thing I did loan and never see again was my carpet shampooer. I need to get a new one but haven’t done it yet.

What shortages do you notice in the shops?

The spice section at my local store often has things out of stock. I’ve always been a scratch cook, so I buy them regularly. I actually ended up ordering from Penzey’s during a sale since I had a bunch run out at once. I also need printer ink and it’s sold out at several places. (I will try not...

What are some things you do in the month leading up to your trip?

Before I travel, I meal plan to use up food in my freezer. Also walk more/exercise. Make my cleaning/task lists of things to do before I go (I like to come home to a clean house). Service/deep clean my car. Buy necessary clothing/toiletry items. I love making lists and travel lists are the best...

slo’s SUNDAY poll - Folding & Putting Away Laundry

It’s me and my 3 kids at home and everyone does their own laundry. The youngest and I fold and put away right out of the dryer. The other two live out of laundry baskets.

    House maintenance budget

The number depends on your value, but even with a new build, you’ll need blinds and curtains right off the bat. My house was 5 years old when we purchased it but had cheap mini blinds. Our budget was tight so it took about 3 years to get things the way I wanted (high quality faux wood, curtain...

What age did you let your kids read MAD Magazine?

My son started reading them around 9. I got him a subscription and my mom got him a bunch of vintage issues for Christmas one year. Old issues are not that expensive at the antique store. He will be 21 soon and still has his collection.

    What are your trivial ambitions?

Trivial: finish a New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle in one sitting. I can finish them completely about 20 percent of the time, but I usually come back to it a day or two later. Non-trivial: lots of travel. Seeing all 50 states and also visiting Iceland. That is at the top of the list...
