If you have alerts set you have a decent chance to at least get some of those. And a lot opens up a few days before and up to the day before the reservation when people finalize their plans and cancel extra reservations. I've gotten CRT twice with it opening up the day before I needed it.

I don't think what you experienced has anything to do with having resale points. I think it is just that the search and modification tool are terrible. I know anytime I am trying to book a hard to get reservation I just cross my fingers I don't get the dwarves.

You'll want to go to guest relations to upgrade. In the past I've went to the one in Disney springs and it was easy to upgrade a ticket
