Mr. Dis_Yoda: 30 Year Old Retail Manager - First trip to WDW was in 2006 & has learned to enjoy it as much as his wife does, Very into exercise & Star Wars

Reason for This Trip
Originally for our anniversary, we were planning on going to go to Las Vegas as I’ve never been as an adult & my husband has never been. Then something happened in early June that changed our vacation plans so that we would now cancel our anniversary trip & go somewhere else about a month earlier. This was the exchange when a certain race was announced:

GnMNtPB.png

uNmazD4.png

So we agreed to both sign up for the Rebel Challenge (10K + Half Marathon) before we even run our first long distance race. Our first long distance race will be on October 4th, 2014 at WDW’s Tower of Terror 10 Miler that we are currently training for. We will start our official Rebel Challenge Training the week after the 10 Miler even though it probably will be the official training plan’s Week 4 or 5.

This will be my husband’s first trip to the Disneyland Resort. This will be my first extended trip to Disneyland. I have only been to Disneyland once in May 2012 in the midst of an interview trip that didn’t work out. I spent about 7 hours at Disneyland & felt I didn’t even get close to the amount of stuff done that I wanted to accomplish. I have not been to California Adventure.

Hotel Bookings

From the research I’ve done, I know a lot of people tend to stay off site while at Disneyland as the costs are a lot less. I know we could have done that & saved some money, but I’m just used to being in the Disney bubble while at WDW trips. As DVC Members, we knew there would be no hope in trying to get a room booked a VGC as it is the smallest of the DVC resorts & didn’t want to hold out hope on a waitlist coming through or not. I had enough stress dealing with the one night reservation waitlists for our September & October Food & Wine Festival trips at WDW!

The availability to book at Disneyland opened on July 30th for 2015.

gRKVtpE.png

Of those choices of prices, I ended up selecting:

ipqYYli.png

There was over a $320 difference in savings from the Disneyland Hotel & over a $550 difference for Grand Californian Hotel when compared to the Paradise Pier Hotel. That amount of savings can go towards the airfare cost.

I know its a bit farther away from the parks & DTD than the other two but we should be fine to walk those distances.

I ended up selected the 4 Day Park Hoppers as I know its easy to switch between those two parks & I’m not sure which days will work better for Fantasmic or World of Color. That at least will give us an option to not be stuck to one park for the day. It was only a $78 difference overall for the park hopper & I feel that is worth it! I’m also not sure how much park we’ll really want to do post Half Marathon.

Looking at the current availability for flights to Santa Ana, CA, we most likely will land at 10:30PM on Wednesday, the 14th. We probably will leave on Monday, the 19th, either around 8AM or Noon so we won’t be able to visit the parks on either of those days. I didn’t want us to fly out the same day as the half marathon as I know that it isn’t recommended, especially with us having at least 6 hours in the air.

Sounds like you're off to a great start! We did the DDD last Aug and had a blast. My favorite part was running the 10k through all the backlot stuff. It was awesome! I think I heard that the 10k course was changed for this year's 10k... Not really sure though.

As an engineer, you'll love it. I know I did!

Happy training!!

Thanks for reading along! I would love to be able to see the backstage areas!

Are you doing the DDD again this year?

I'll keep an eye out for the reports from the Disneyland Half Marathon once everyone gets back next weekend (and I get back from my vacation as well) and hope the people took pictures along the course.

Run Information

When this run was initially announced & we said we were going to go for it, I then had to worry about registration. We are DVC Members, WDW Annual Pass Holders & Disney Visa users. Luckily, they did have advance registration for DVC & AP Holders!

It was super stressful that day as I had a meeting at work at 11AM & I knew registration opened at 12:00PM EST. Luckily, the meeting didn’t run long! I was back at my desk, waiting on the links to go live on the DVC Website at Noon. I got us both registered prior to it selling out in 9 Minutes for the advance registrations!

Reading over the thread for the race, I was super happy we had no issues as it seems there were some for some people. It also made me happy when registration officially opened the next week, I didn’t have to deal with that madness or the madness that was general admission.

I have one long time friend who will be running the Half Marathon with us. Her children are running the 5k! Hopefully as we get closer to the trip, we’ll figure out more of a meetup for us. She stays around a 13 min/mil which is where I hope to be at. I was almost there until I hurt my ankle during our July WDW trip & I’m now working on bringing my pace back up as it heals. This also will work out well if my husband gets annoyed at me & leaves me behind (which is perfectly ok)

Flights

Purchased Airfare Today as it was finally less than $900 for the two of us, which for flights from the east coast to west coast is very reasonable.

We are flying out on January 14th at 6:11PM from Fort Myers, FL & Arriving at Orange County @ 10:32PM. There is a 54 minute layover in Houston.

We are leaving on January 19th at 11:29AM from Orange County and arriving at Fort Myers @ 10:13PM. There is a 2.5 hour layover in Houston.

ADR Selection

As my 60 Day reservation window has opened for Disneyland Dining, I’ve made some decisions on where we would be dining during our trip. Everywhere we are going will be new to us. Part of me wants to do the chef’s counter at Napa Rose but as this is our first trip, I should probably try normal Napa Rose first.

Training Since Tower of Terror

Originally, my training plan was going to be to start up on the official Rebel Challenge training plan after the completion of the Tower of Terror 10 Miler.

FUQcbwe.jpg

See! We Finished!

Here is the full post about the run for us:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=52501514&posted=1

However, the other side of that run was that afterwards I was really beat up about how bad I did. For as much training I did for that, I still finished above the required pace requirements of 16:00 min/miles which killed my ongoing motivation for the Rebel Challenge. The month of October I pretty much half heartedly did the required runs in the plan.

On October 28th, Fit2Run opened a new location closer to my home & did some giveaways.

It didn’t really help my motivation either.
In November, Disney released the Star Wars Medals.

aX3dmN9.jpg

Also didn’t help me get excited. I cut some of the schedule runs short or skipped some of the middle of the week runs.

I had signed my husband & I up for the Turkey Trot 5k. Thursday Morning at 5:30, when my husband told me he wasn’t going as he had gotten home at 2:15AM (Black Thursday/Friday Set Up), I was actually shocked I did go through with doing the 5K. My motivation was gone. I did it though - although I was slow.

BU6yuGi.png

Rwzc6TZ.jpg

RlGrzEA.jpg

The good thing about the Turkey Trot was that I did try to run in my SparkleSkirt I had purchased in October. I hated it! It kept sliding down feeling like I was going to moon the people behind me. I need to sell it so my husband doesn’t get too mad about me spending $80 on a skirt that didn’t work for me.

I had a bit of a breakdown this morning about this challenge. I have also weighed myself and I am up a fair amount from my lowest this past year - like 20 pounds more. Its like all that great work I did earlier this year is gone. I started thinking about some of the things that are different. I haven’t been holding myself accountable for weekly run updates. I haven’t been doing any extra workouts outside of the runs. I started drinking soda and sweet tea again. I’ve been enjoying a snack at work when people put food on the work food table. I haven’t been bringing lunch from home. All of these things add up.

So I’m going to start my weekly training updates again to help my accountability. I recorded my measurements again for my own information. I need to not purchase anymore bad drinks and keep up with the water (adding either lemon or peppermint for flavor) Hopefully it helps my confidence for being able to finish.

Congrats on paying off your vacation!!! That's major!

Wow! Your dining reservations schedule sure is packed!!! We love Carthay circle (did a solo visit at their lounge and DH and I went for my birthday in October). Yummmmmmmyyyy!!! Definitely get the cheddar biscuits (more like hush puppies, but super delicioso!!!). Did a mommy day for my girlfriend's 49th bday at steakhouse 55. We had a great experience. One day we hope to do napa rose.

I love the Disney themed Dooney and bourkes...have the DCL wristlet, Disneyland wristlet, disneyland cross body (both in light blue), and in July purchased the Mickey & Minnie downtown shopper tote in pink and light green. Your new purse is so cool and unique!

Can't wait to hear more! :santa:

Following along! Still reading about your marathon training and will catch up later! :thumbsup2

Thanks for joining in!

Its a great feeling! Now just to wait for the packaging papers to come!

We aren't really ones to enjoy counter service type meals - we rather just sit down and get out of the heat although sometimes it may just be a meal of appetizers. I also am not a breakfast person but my husband is. Those cheddar biscuits sound good!

I had a lot of Disney Dooneys but I sold them off a couple years ago when we moved from Georgia to Florida as we decluttered the house. Everytime I've gone to WDW, I haven't been able to get the Haunted Mansion purse & this has a similar feel to that one.

December Week 1 Run Update

Monday, December 1st
Plan - Make myfitnesspal even out
Actual - 33 Minutes on Bike

JHUyEja.png

As it wasn’t a run day, I needed to find something to motivate me to go to the gym. I restarted myfitnesspal this weekend & most days I’ve been within 200 calories of my goal intake after exercise. Today we went to dinner at Carrabba’s so it brought me about 375 calories over the daily goal. I headed to the gym to do the bike for long enough to burn enough to get even for the day.

Tuesday, December 2nd
Plan - 30 to 45 Minute Run
Actual - 30 Minute Walk on Treadmill

MrfRTCT.png

There wasn’t enough time to do much longer as we planned on finally seeing Interstellar this night so after work we were able to get the 30 minutes in, eat a healthy dinner (Rotisserie Chicken - Yum!) and get to the movie on time.

Wednesday, December 3rd
Plan - No Plan
Actual - Nothing

I actually ate pretty well in line today for the calorie plan so I didn’t feel bad about not going to the gym.

Thursday, December 4th
Plan - 30 to 45 Minute Run
Actual - Went Short

uW52FaE.png

I got home really late from work & the gym was having one of those member parties that I avoid going to as it makes the gym too busy so I did a quick loop down my street and back to my house. It was more of a walk than a run though as I was too busy thinking about work in my head.

Friday, December 5th
Plan - Get Rid of High Frustration Levels
Actual - 30 Minutes on the Bike

xlepFpC.png

I was really aggravated today at work. I left at 3:00PM as that should be the time I leave on my working Friday only to be called back into work on an issue that wasn’t even my deal & I couldn’t fix. I got home at 6:00PM and really just wanted to drink my dinner. I decided to head to the gym (to balance out the calories) and then get ice cream and Publix Chicken Fingers for dinner. I guess that was a better solution than just vodka (although I did have some of that too)

Saturday, December 6th
Plan - 3 Mile Run
Actual - 3 Mile Run

C3JXueh.png

My husband and I headed to the gym early in the morning after we woke up to get our 3 Miles in per training plan. It wasn’t busy so that was great!

Sunday, December 7th
Plan - 11 Mile Run
Actual - 7.26 Miles

PtSlD1j.png

My plan was to wake up with my husband as he went to work. This would then force me to run on the road rather than the treadmill as the gym wouldn’t be open. Well 5AM came and I just rolled back over and eventually woke up at 8AM. I never sleep in that late! But with getting to the gym at 8:30AM, I only went so far before I started realizing all the other stuff I needed to get done today and just went for a long as I could before I had to go elsewhere.

following along!! I love running but this past year haven't got to do it I did my first 5k last year and would love to be able to go to a Disney run one day!! I know exactly how you feel with the sodas and bad snacks and all...I was doing so good on myfitnesspal then started slacking and it has been so hard to get back into it!!

Disney Races are great for beginners although the price point is higher than most local races.

Its a continuous cycle of being good and not being good. It's comforting to read about other people have the exact same struggles of falling off track. I've been good for 2 weeks now - now to keep it up through the holiday season!

Waivers

On Friday December 12th, runDisney released the Course Maps & Waivers for the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend. While I couldn’t bring the waivers yet, I was able to to see what our bib numbers are.

Corral Placement

So with our bib numbers, my husband was placed in Corral B. I was placed in Corral E. Honestly, it is where we both belong. I was super slow at Tower of Terror where as he did really well. I’m nervous now about being swept, especially after this week (will explain in my weekly training roundup.) I’m going to have to try to get as close to the start of E as possible to get as much space between myself and the balloon ladies as possible.

December Week 2 Run Update

Monday, December 8th
Plan - Rest Day
Actual - Nothing

I apparently fail at walking on flat ground in stable old running shoes. I rolled my ankle once again. I did this during training for Tower of Terror while doing my required run at Disney World in July.

I’m so angry at myself!

Tuesday, December 9th
Plan - 30 to 45 Minute Run
Actual - Nothing

At my place of work, we have someone that does Active Release Techniques that visits on Tuesday & Thursdays. The one we have visit our site also works with some of the players for the Miami Dolphins so he’s pretty good when it comes to athletic based injuries. He’s actually one of the most certified A.R.T. practitioners in the state.

I had went to him weekly from July until right after Tower of Terror because of my ankle but he deemed it good to go & well, it was until yesterday. I went by his room after a meeting to see when he could fit me in for an appointment & luckily he had availability! During my treatment, I told him I have like 5 weeks before I leave to go on this race trip & we do have 2 weeks of plant shutdown that would affect his on site appointments. So, I’m going twice weekly during those open weeks until Tuesday before I leave for Disneyland. I’m also not allowed to run this week. I didn’t ice when I hurt it yesterday but I did ice it today as he told me I have up to 48 hours to ice to help the healing pricing.

Wednesday, December 10th
Plan - Nothing Planned
Actual - Nothing

Still babying the foot.

Thursday, December 11th
Plan - 30 to 45 Minute Run
Actual - Nothing

When to the A.R.T. specialist today and he worked on my ankle for about 10 minutes. Still not allowed to run this week.

Friday, December 12th
Plan - Nothing Planned
Actual - 20 Minutes on the Bike

Not doing any exercise all week was really bothering me at this point. I remember that the gym had this upper body cardio trainer called the sprinter along with the cardio rope. Well, I tried to do the sprint thing and after 3 minutes, I was annoyed. It wasn’t a comfortable exercise & I couldn’t adjust the arm handles to make it less awkward. I looked around for the rope pull but apparently, they got rid of it. I did just a weight training with the upper body but felt it wasn’t enough. I decided to do the stationary bike on a lower level than usual (like a level 5) for about 20 minutes so I could at least feel like I did something. It didn’t cause any additional pain at least! I also didn’t push myself to risk more injury.

V2Uyt0o.png

Waivers were also released today for the Star Wars Half Marathon and I had a freak out on how I’m going to do this in 5 weeks, especially considering the injury that just took place. I’m looking at a few different 4 week Half Marathon plans to see which one is going to work for me as I no longer think the Galloway Plan is going to work with as many off days I’ve now had.

Saturday, December 13th
Plan - 4 Mile Run
Actual - 30 Minutes on the Bike

When my husband and I woke up this morning, he really wanted to go the gym before we went grocery shopping. I decided that the bike didn’t hurt too bad the day before so I did it again. My husband cut the gym short so I ended up not going for the full hour like I thought.

0MobQxy.png

This night I also went on a 2 mile walk around a friend’s neighborhood as she lives in a neighborhood which really goes all out for holiday lights so there was a large group over for wine then a walk around. My ankle was slightly sore afterwards but not horribly so.

Sunday, December 14th
Plan - Nothing
Actual - 2 Mile Walk

I figured doing 2 Mile Walk on the treadmill would be good for me after looking at my pedometer and seeing I only had walked 2,000 steps all day by 4PM (I had my monthly massage & we went to the movies) I didn’t want to push it though and end up hurting myself more.

MFa5ZFe.png

1 Month Until The Trip!!!

UGH to that poor ankle! :crazy2: Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks! It seems if its not one thing its another. There is no way I'm not running without a brace for the foreseeable future at least not until Princess if over with.
