20th Anniversary Trip - Keys to the Kingdom, Victoria and Albert’s, Grand Floridian OR Why we will eat ramen for a year.

Figured I would go ahead and do a whole review of our recent 5/27 - 5/31/2019 adult trip to Disney for future adults to read and enjoy. I stink at pictures, so they will be few and far between, but we did some totally awesome things on this trip, and I’ve got no FP+ to snag, so why the heck not.

Quick background, DH and I are early 40’s, Celebrating our 20th Wedding Anniversary and Florida Residents (former Orlando residents but now way south). We happen to be AP this year but only because we knew this trip was coming and we have a DD who has played some soccer tournaments at Disney so we grabbed them last year. I’m a Disney fan, but the kids really never were. So, we haven’t really done Disney in years and when we do, it’s just for a day or so, spur of the moment type thing. I head up to the Food and Wine festival pretty much yearly with friends.

Originally we had grand plans for our 20th involving overseas travel and fancy pants accommodations but our oldest DS is finishing his Jr year in high school and wound up with a stacked summer of crazy opportunities to travel and attend some pretty cool programs. I couldn’t see not being there to get him packed up and ready and off on the plane for the first 2, so we thought long and hard and decided to go big at Disney. No holds barred, all the things I have always wanted to do, nicest room, etc.

It was the trip of my lifetime. Of course there were some hits and some misses, but overall, we had such a really lovely time. Follow along as I share the good, the bad, and the awesome.

Here’s a quick breakdown:
Day 1: Arrive at GF SLC, Le Cellier Lunch, All 3 Mountains
Day 2: EMM, Keys to the Kingdom, California grill
Day 3: Nine Dragons Lunch, Behind the Seeds, Jon Secada, Frozen Ever After Dessert Party
Day 4: Cabana at the Grand, Dinner at Victoria and Albert’s
Day 5: Tiffins and FOP

Day 1!

Wellllll, it would have been Day 1 if I hadn’t gotten over excited the day before Day 1 and hoodwinked my husband into getting on the road a day early and Priceline-ing a hotel for the night. We wound up at Rosen Shingle Creek, which was lovely. So on Day 1 v2 we woke up at Shingle creek and made an incredibly romantic breakfast stop at Waffle House (as do most couples looking for love). From there we headed over to GF to drop our bags and head out for the day.

We were staying at the Sugarloaf Club at the GF, so when we checked in at the guard gate, they must have given the heads up to at CM at the front. As we pulled up to unload our 8 bags (yes, that’s like 2 bags per day but WHATVER) she approached and asked if I was Mrs. Fox. Super nice touch. Husband went to park the car and I took the opportunity to have the CM help me pull of a surprise. I had called the GF bakery a week ago to ask if they would be able to re-create the top tier of our wedding cake and put our actual cake topper on it. They had me send pics, charged me a reasonable fee and told me to sneak them my cake topper. I asked if she could help and she was excited to. We hid it in a bag she carried while she escorted us out to SLC.

We got to SLC just about 10 minutes before breakfast was ending. Since we’d only had one breakfast so far, we let them twist our arms into trying some Mickey Waffles. They kept telling us they do not have them every day (SPOILER: they have them most days) and making a big deal. So, we ate them. Then the concierge person made us little Happy 20th Anniversary buttons to wear and told us we would get a text when the room was ready. We happily headed off to EPCOT.

We were extra super excited to take the monorail over. I have a thing where I don’t like the green/purple monorail and only ride it in dire circumstances. As we walked up to security at GF monorail station, purple/green was pulling up, so we slow-rolled it to let it pass. Oh, and yes, my DH is the most tolerant human on the planet, why do you ask? We wound up getting PINK (which they stupidly call coral) and had a totally empty car. If I was smart, I could turn this picture the right way, but I am me and so it is sideways forever.

Took the monorail to EPCOT and were running a teeny bit early for lunch ressies at Le Cellier, so we stopped at the butterfly house to check it out. Apparently, I took a picture there! 407910
All that picture taking was making me super hungry, so we headed off to Le Cellier to eat. It had been at least an hour since something went in my mouth hole and no one wants that. Since we had 4 more lunches to eat today, we shared a lunch here. Yummy bread, Beer cheese soup, some other unmemorable appetizer, and the filet. All were good to pretty good. Nothing knock your socks off your feet, but still a great lunch. We were too full for dessert but since our pins said we were celebrating, the cast of Canada gifted us with a Mousse Moose.

He’s cuter right side up.

Since we had our 3 mountain fast passes coming up, we headed out to the monorail to MK. Well, we tried to. But the monorail was broken. So, they sent us to a bus. And then as we were getting off the bus, super special CMs were there to magically touch our Magic Bands and give us free extra FP+ for our trouble. Our trouble was non-existent, but I’ll take a FP+ anyday.
We headed to Thunder, Splash, and Space. Waited no time with our FP+s (too annoying to keep using the + sign, FP from now on). I should note that it was as hot as the surface of the sun so I was very glad we were not just wandering around. Plus, it was like 45 minutes since my last meal so I got a popsicle before we walked to Space. Here’s a fun fact, I am getting old enough that my stomach was not feeling so hot after the three coasters. I am sure it had nothing to do with all the crap I had eaten. Oh, I almost forgot, my DH’s favorite thing in all of WDW is the Hall of Presidents. So, I indulged him because I am the most amazing wife on the planet. Only issue besides how BORING that is, is that just like everything else, people now feel the need to let their feelings about current and past administrations known. So, there was some booing and some cheering at certain spots, which made me roll my eyes way back in my head and want to punch people in the face.
After Space, we hopped on Carousel of Progress (which got STUCK and repeated a whole scene and where was the Magic FP CM then, because I totally thought those androids were going to come to life) and then People Mover. And then we got the text that our room was ready so we hopped right back on the monorail and headed back to GF.

When we got to SLC it was afternoon tea time, which was good because who doesn’t need a 5th lunch? They had uncrustables, which I would not normally eat, but, eh. Free. There. Disney. Yeah, I ate them. We went up to the room and it was 2 Qs instead of a K and there was a whole drama and we somehow wound up in the very worst room in all of Walt Disney World. And, I mean, it sucked. And it was a problem the whole time, but in the Grand (see what I did there?) scheme, it just made us sure we’d never stay at GF again, and didn’t dampen our trip. I posted more in the Resorts thread where people hate me because I did not love the GF if you care at all.

In the end, it took so long to get that all straight, that we decided to forgo our planned monorail crawl and just sit at the GF Marina, eat pizza, and watch the fireworks. It was really nice and even nicer to head right back to the room after and sleep peacefully until Godzilla started getting breakfast prepped the next morning!

Super curious about your room! Off to the resort board...

DH would probably never go back to WDW, but I think it sounds like a fun anniversary.

Joining in! We are also celebrating our 20th at Disney in three weeks time! Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures!

Day 2: Early Morning Magic, Keys to Kingdom, California Grill

We woke up super bright and early to get to MK for Early Morning Magic. Grabbed a cup of coffee from the CL lounge and got on a monorail pretty much immediately. Oh! I forgot to mention that I am the best wife of all time and had ordered husband and I matching shirts for our anniversary. They were spectacular and he was just so surprised when I pulled them out of my suitcase! The added bonus was that every time I looked at DH all day, I basically died giggling.

(WHY ALL UPSIDE DOWN PICTURES?!)
Anyway, we got to MK super early and waited outside the gates to be let in to Fantasy Land. Pretty much exactly at 7:45, they let us in and we made a beeline for teacups. We managed to ride teacups, Peter Pan, Small World, Carousel, Little Mermaid, Winnie the Pooh, and Mine Train before the real rope drop at 9am. Basically no wait for anything. Then we went to Cosmic Rays for our breakfast. Breakfast was exactly as described in every review I read - fine, filling, and plentiful. Beating the heat and crowds was priceless.
408344
We finished breakfast and headed to Tony’s to meet up for our Keys to the Kingdom tour. No spoilers, because they told us not to, but this was a really excellent tour. I loved the parts on stage where we learned some cool things about MK and the history. I was surprised by how much I did not want to be backstage and in the underground parts. It really was strange to be in a place where I knew I wasn’t supposed to be and I much preferred the cool on-stage stuff. Still, the tour and our guide were fantastic and I learned so much. Lunch was included at Pecos Bills. I got the nachos. Don’t do that. Get the tacos. I mean, they were fine, but the way they keep them from getting soggy means you basically get deconstructed nachos that are kind of hard to get constructed. Everything tasted good and was a nice break.

We finished our tour and headed back to GF on the boat. Super easy and fast. We rested in the room for a while and then the GF delivered our awesome surprise cake complete with our wedding cake topper. They did a super spectacular job and it was an almost direct copy of our original wedding cake. Very impressive and the cake also tasted really good.

Next up was dinner at California Grill. We booked this at 180 days out at 8pm to catch the 9pm fireworks, hopefully with a window table. We took the monorail over and got to the check in booth at 7:40. Requested a window table, told them we were willing to wait however long at the bar and went upstairs. Checked in again upstairs (that’s weird, right?!) and again said we’d like a window table with a fireworks view and were willing to wait however long and have bar drinks. At about 8:40, they were ready to seat us. The seater walked us right by an empty window table and sat us at a table in the middle of the room. I mentioned that we had been waiting for a window table and pointed to the empty one by the window. She told me that they will not sit parties of two at window tables at fireworks time. Totally fine, but maybe someone could have mentioned before we waited 40 minutes past our reservation? There was actually an empty window table in the lounge area, so we sat there for dinner. It’s full service and same menu as regular Cali Grill and there were several open tables. It counted as a canceled dining reservation but they waived the fee as we were considered a “walk-away”? So, if you are a party of 2, wanting CG window table for fireworks, just get there super early and stalk a lounge window table. Of course, YMMV, but this worked beautifully for us. We had the charcuterie and short rib dumplings for appetizers. I had the filet for dinner which was absolutely out of this world and the potatoes were so so good. I can not even recall what husband ordered. Fireworks were totally so awesome. They turn down the lights and pipe in music and it was really lovely. I had chocolate melting cake for dessert and it was super good but so much food! This meal was a highlight of our trip, shockingly good and what a view. I would absolutely eat here again.
408347
We headed back to GF on the monorail and went to bed! Up next was EPCOT and we needed our rest.

EPCOT day!
409009
Since I was little, I always felt like a day at EPCOT was like a punishment. Then I married a man who really prefers it to the other parks, so what could I do? Planned a day at EPCOT, hitting some of his faves and making it palatable for me.
We started with an 11:30am FP for Spaceship Earth. The genius camera somehow thought my husband’s shoulder was my face so we had some laughs about that.
409012
We booked a lunch reservation with the concert seating for Jon Secada that night, we decided on Nine Dragons because with all of our trips to EPCOT over the years, neither of us could remember ever setting foot in China. Nine Dragons was actually really good. The package came with an appetizer, main course, and dessert. All were much better than we anticipated and the service was excellent. The restaurant was really pretty and not overly crowded. It really was a great choice and we would go back. It was so freaking hot this day that as we walked around the World Showcase, a few of the countries had CMs with trays of ice water walking around helping people hydrate.
From there we had FP for the Land and a Behind the Seeds tour, which frankly, I was pretty much dreading. Turns out, the tour was really great. We got to eat some slices of the cucumber they grow there and also feed the giant fish. Our tour guide knew an awful lot about the growing practices and we got to see some really cool things up close. This was a really cheap tour and I have to admit I really enjoyed it.
409011
We had FP for Soarin’, which I really enjoy. Then we snagged FP for Imagination which is now the worst ride on the entire planet and I do not understand why they don’t just revert it back. Then we grabbed a FP for Nemo, which is fine but why they didn’t do more with the existing tanks is a little confusing, those parts are so amazing and the rest is a little blah.
Then it was time for food and drinks from a few places including my favorite slushee from France, and decided to stop and get some fish and chips at the Pub. I fed a squirrel by hand, which I found incredibly enjoyable. We had a few of the food offerings from the Flower and Garden Booths, but all a little blurry from there! It was time for Jon Secada, which was really a great show and we had excellent reserved seats and plenty of room.
After Jon, we walked over to check in for the Frozen Dessert Party and then went to ride Mexico. When we were done riding the Dessert Party was fully open and we got our table. It is communal seating and we were placed with a nice family (two adults and a teen). I was a little tipsy by now but we had a quick chat with them and then got some fondue and desserts. Alcohol is also included here and the drinks were strong. I could not finish mine for fear of being actually drunk at Disney. We had great seats for Illuminations, and the snowflake glasses they gave us were pretty cool. Walked over to Frozen ride, rode with no wait, and walked out with almost no crowds. A really great EPCOT Day. Next day was our actual anniversary, with a cabana at GF and dinner at V&A’s. A very relaxing day.
409013

Resort Day!

Today was our actual 20th Anniversary and we planned a very lazy day totally at our resort. Cabana for a half day, Victoria and Albert’s for dinner. We planned on sleeping in late and rolling out to the pool at 10am but the breakfast prep was loud today, so we were awake with the sun. We lazed in bed, watched some GMA, and had some breakfast in bed from the CL. I tried to call Ivy Trellis from the room to see if there was anyway to fit me in for a blow out and makeup later to be all pretty for V&A’s, but no one picked up and I hung up after 10 minutes. Leisurely got dressed and headed to the pool.
409015
We had gotten both a phone call and email confirming our 10am cabana ressie, so imagine our surprise when we got there and the attendant told us she was showing our reservation for the afternoon! Luckily, there was a cabana open for her to get set up, so it was really more of a 5 minute issue than anything. The cabana has a fan, a TV, a fridge stocked with water, soda, and fruit. It also had a billion towels, sunscreen, and two lounges, a couch, and a table. Really nice way to spend a day. The pool was quiet at first, but around noon, they had like a pool host and music. The cabana attendant brought around menus and took our drink and lunch orders. I got the frozen drink flight and it was so good. Mmmmmm. My lunch was a crab cake sandwich, which was fine. Not amazing, not disgusting. We swam, read books, napped and enjoyed until 2pm. Then we headed back to the room for a nap and to get ready for dinner. Mousekeeping had made a cute little towel swan thing on our bed. Super sweet.
409017
When we got back to the room, I tried calling Ivy Trellis again, again was on hold for a long time, so I wandered out to CL to ask if the concierge had a magical number to call and get a person. They did have a magical number, but unsurprisingly Ivy was fully booked. I should have really thought of this earlier in the week, but it saved me $100 or so, and really was fine. But, if you think you might want this, book early, as with everything at WDW.
Got all dolled up for dinner, had a glass of champagne in the CL, walked over to the main building and sat and listened to the band play for a little bit. 409016
Victoria and Albert’s deserves its own longer post, so I’ll work on that later.

Victoria and Albert’s

Before I start, I think what most people will want to know is if this was worth the cost. I will say this; it was an incredible meal, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the service was exceptional, and the food really fantastic. We have never had such exceptional service anywhere else. We have, however, had food that reaches (or exceeds) this level. We’ve never had a dinner bill this high. So, it absolutely was worth it once, but it would not be worth it twice, if that makes sense. I’m really glad we did it, but I am not looking to do it again purely because the cost is so much higher than comparable food in Miami where we live. A dinner with wine at the best restaurant here would be about half the cost. The service would pale in comparison but the food would not.
We were impressed with V & A’s on every level, though.

Ok, so here goes.
409051
We got all dressed up and headed out to dinner. We were greeted before the door of the restaurant and the host offered to take some pics. The restaurant is really pretty, if very Victorian. Each table had fresh flowers. We were in the Queen Victoria room so there were only three other tables of 2. One table was largely silent, one table had been there before and wanted us all to know it and were so loud and also obnoxious, and one with a lovely couple enjoying their meal. I lack the ability to tune out anyone at a restaurant, so I got to hear a whole lot about couple # 2! It was fine, though.

About a week before dinner, we got a call from Victoria and Albert’s asking for dining preferences or allergies. I actually am a pretty fussy eater and I completely hate scaled fish and also caviar. I’ve had fish at really excellent places, I’ve tried the dishes that “even people that hate fish absolutely love this dish”, and really I just do not like it. However, I had decided not to ask for any adjustments to the standard menu, as I wanted to try what the chefs were cooking. So, I was actually really nervous about spending a gajillion dollars on a meal that was sure to have a few courses that were likely not going to be a hit with me. It was stressing me out!

We got our personal menus and one waiter came by to see if we wanted any additions. We both did the wine pairing and DH did the beef upgrade. I did drink all my wine, and did not get a list of what it was, so I both can not tell you what it was AND do not even recall which I liked best. We’ll call it a perfect pairing and move on!
409055
They poured us a glass of champagne and we were off to the races.
409052
Our first course was a fried oyster with caviar. It was the dish I was 2nd most nervous about. But, I should not have been. The caviar was so mild and the oyster so yummy. I really enjoyed it and started to relax a little. Also, wine. I also enjoyed my magic wand spoon.
409054
Next up was bread and butter. The bread was just a normal roll but the butter was special. Sculpted like a chef’s hat and hand carved. Apparently also more butterfat than normal? It was impressive to watch but really did just taste like bread and butter.
409056
Next up was lobster. A tail and claw preparation. It was really exceptional.
409057
Next was the fish, which I was completely worried about. So worried I did not even photograph it. It was bar none the best dish of any type I have had anywhere. The fish was so delicate and the sauce delicious. Absolutely my favorite dish of all time. So good. Mmmmmmm.
The next course was a surprise from the chef. A pasta envelope with bacon and cheese. Seriously really good. Yummy.409058
Ok, now I have made myself really hungry and need to go eat some lunch! More later!

My lunch was no v&a’s but, I am properly nourished now and can continue!

Next up was a chicken thing with ramp gnocchi. I still do not know what ramps are, but this gnocchi was seriously insane. It was the one item everyone in the dining room commented on as they ate it. Completely phenomenal.
409086
Somewhere in this meal was two more bread and butter services. One maybe with salt and herbs and one with truffle. Little blurry.
Next course was really good too - sort of savory and sweet. The lamb is resting on a sweet purée of some sort. I liked it a lot.
409095

The next course was the wagyu beef course. I can not even describe the texture and flavor of the upgraded beef (though husband preferred the non-upgraded beef). It was seriously worth the cost of the upgrade and beyond imagination good. Like, really. So freaking good. One weird thing, the service and food had been super friendly and not at all fussy and weird until this course. They brought out some apparently incredibly special bottle of very fine balsamic vinegar (?!?) and doled out a teeny tiny drop for each of us. I seriously thought they were joking and started giggling. And then I realized they were serious. My review of the special vinegar: damn same as the colavita I have at home!
409096409097
And honestly, this is where it all goes downhill for me. My tummy was totally full. No more room. Like, NONE. But there were courses left. And also, I had soooooo much wine that I was also beyond tipsy at this point. And the vinegar really struck me as hilarious. And I got the giggles in a huge way. Like, could not stop. And I tried to be quiet but I am sure I was not. And so, there were a few dessert courses and I have only these pictures of all of them and no recollection of what they may have been.
409099409100

409101
Somewhere someone offered me coffee. And my brain felt like that was a good plan, which it was not. But, it was a cool brewing method.
409102
Then they brought out chocolate, which no way I could eat, so they boxed it up for me.

And then Scrooge McDuck had to pay the bill!!409103
And they gave us a bag with the chocolates and some bread and a rose for me. And apparently someone took another picture of us. And then I went back to our room and died all night long!

I just stumbled on your report, and love your no-holds barred adults-only trip! The sideways and upside down pictures are cracking me up. Your dinner at V&A looks amazing and both of you look great (sideways!). We've eaten there twice, lucky me, once for my birthday and once for our 9th anniversary. Not sure when we will return but I love it so much. That siphon coffee is so cool.
Sorry your GF room was not the greatest. We've stayed there once but in a DVC studio. The DVC rooms look nicer than the regular rooms. It was lovely but we weren't expecting much in terms of service since we were in a DVC room and so removed from the main building, and of course no housekeeping, LOL.
The cabana sounds phenomenal. I always can't seem to splurge for one, but maybe one day if I can convince the hubby.
Happy Anniversary!

Thanks!!

The cabana we did for a half day, between 10-2. I actually have no idea how much it cost because by that point we were in “fake money” territory and it was like, “Oh, that’s $10 Trillion Quadrillion, that’s fine, let’s just look under the mattress”. I need the shade and did not want to worry about finding space. There were lots of things we did that I thought were totally worth it, and a few things that were not. Cabana was totally worth it.

Up bright and early with the club level breakfast staff, we ate our breakfast in bed and packed up to leave the GF. Today was AK day and we had FP for FOP, Everest, and Safari as well as lunch at Tiffin’s before hitting the road.

The food and alcohol combo from the night before had hit me hard and I was not firing on all cylinders. So, I made an incredibly ******* decision to have us wear our “Disney-Bounding” outfits that we were originally going to wear on our ill-fated monorail crawl on night one. It was possibly the hottest day of the year and we were going to Animal Kingdom. My outfit was Cinderella and his Prince Charming.

We got to AK somewhere around 10am and they were putting out signs in the lot that said “Due to inclement weather please self-Park”. Thermometer in car reading 101*. Not one to make good decisions, we parked and headed in to roast ourselves on the surface of the sun.
409284

First stop was getting a dole whip and cookie ice cream sandwich because I really wanted to not fit into a single pair of my own pants when we returned home (SPOILER: Mission. Accomplished). And then we headed over to Everest for our FP. Apparently Everest had been down earlier in the day so half the park had recovery FP and the FP line was all the way down the path in the sun. It was only about 15 minutes but OH MY WORD. Rode Everest and felt sort of ick. I refuse to believe that I am getting too old to ride on coasters, so I am blaming it on food.
Animal Kingdom is actually my favorite park, and I love to stand and watch the animals for long periods of time. I was excited to try to see the new baby gorilla, so we did that path. Did not see the baby, but did she the toddler and his mom. And listen, I know it’s Florida in the Summer, and I know it’s hot, but I was actually shocked at how miserable making it was. Really impacted this day. Some bad decisions on my part but UGH.
Then we rode the safari and saw the regular crew, but the lions were not there. Tons of baby giraffe though.
After that, it was our much awaited ressie at Tiffins. Now, my very utmost favorite restaurant in the world is an Indian restaurant and I pretty much eat and love every single thing they serve me there. It’s a really excellent restaurant and I am totally spoiled. So, I was really looking forward to Tiffins. But, I was also very hot, very hungover, and very tired, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
409275
Oh! Look! The picture is right side up. Please note I am in fact wearing skinny jeans and a long sleeved linen shirt and my face is the same color as Prince Charming’s pants. STUPID.

We ordered the bread service (Meh) and then the cauliflower thing (decent) and Brussels sprouts (not crispy!). I had the butter chicken which was actually not even good. It was an incredibly expensive meal with little value. We did not get dessert but they did bring out dessert for our Anniversary.
409283

After that was FOP time and we were on the ride very quickly. It’s awesome. This was my second ride and I loved it even more this time. And then it was just so hot. We bailed and started the long car ride home!

I’ll do a recap in my last post about worth it/not worth it, in our opinions. And then I’ll start dreaming of my next vacation!

Now it’s time, to say goodbye....

Ok, so for quick recap of what we did, if we’d do it again, and are we glad we did it, drumroll please.....

1. Grand Floridian itself. Would not do again, not really glad we did it, overall just a disappointment.
2. Club Level Stay. Probably would not do again. Glad we tried it once though. Would rather save the money for park snacks and did not find a higher level of service for this level.
3. Le Cellier. Would not do again, but REALLY glad we tried it.
4. Nine Dragons - would do again, was worth it.
5. Garden Rocks Package - would do again, was worth it.
6. Early Morning Magic - oh yes! This was brilliant genius easy and totally worth it and would do again every time. Yes!
7. Keys to the Kingdom - totally worth it. Would not do this same tour again BUT would absolutely totally do another backstage tour. Really great.
9. Frozen Desert Party - Eh. I’m torn on this one. Not sure it was worth it. Wouldn’t do again, but we did enjoy it.
10. Cabana - oh, yes, yes, yes. For sure worth it, for sure repeat.
11. Cali Grill - I actually think this was the best surprise of the trip. Food was excellent, view amazing, service good. Was worth it and would go back.
12. Tiffins - not worth it, would not go back. Thumbs down.
13. Victoria and Albert’s- once in a lifetime. We would not return but I am really glad we went once.
14. Behind the Seeds - this was totally
Worth it and I am shocked to say I really
Would do again. Very interesting.
15. Doing a poor review of the GF on the resort board. 0/10. Would not suggest. Won’t do ever again.
