Absent from Aulani?

I have read in numerous places that, though you will see Stitch in character and statue at Aulani, you don't see Lilo there.

Is there a particular reason? Was someone afraid to offend the Hawaiians for some reason?

Thoughts appreciated...

Here is some info about why Lilo isn't at Aulani, pulled from an older thread on the subject of characters you can see there:

From what I know the reasoning behind no Lilo is that she is a caricature of a Hawaiian person. Seeing as there are many Hawaiian people at Aulani I believe it was a decision based on cultural sensitivity. A good move in my book.

Not the story I heard. It was told that LILO lives in Maui & not Oahu which is silly also. After each stay at Aulani I have wrote on the survey to have Lilio as a main character. It only makes sense. Honestly, the characters only enhance the stay slightly. The main attraction is the resort itself. Disney did a fantastic job and as I always say it never gets old having stayed over 9 separate 2 night stays.

Here's an article where Joe Roehe explains the absence of Lilo and the inclusion of Stitch at Aulani. Here's the portion that explains the thinking.

“In a certain sense, because remember what Lilo is – Lilo is a little Hawaiian girl, and here you are in Hawaii with real, live Hawaiians walking around all around you. It just seemed a little funky that you’d have an obviously make-believe Hawaiian when you have all these real Hawaiians walking around right there in front of you. Whereas Stitch, being an imaginary character, is another way of connecting into that story.”
