I think it may well be. When we used to get APs, we had to go to one of the parks and have our photos taken (like a passport photo) and these were sealed into our tickets. I'm sure that by now they probably have a most sophisticated way of doing things.

Yes, you can only buy tem from Disney, although not exclusively at the parks. You can buy APs at the Disney Store in Orlando International Airport, and you can buy vouchers online or from Disney Stores (which must be exchanged for the APs at WDW). I can't see there is any advantage to buying APs in advance - we simply get ours when we arrive at WDW. Any of the ticket desks at the parks or at Downtown Disney will sell you APs.

You no longer need to have photgraphs taken for APs. Instead there are bio-readers (they scan your fingers in a little machine at each turnstyle).
