We just moved to the Vegas area last month. I was just curious to find out how many, if any, DISers live in Las Vegas.

Check in and say hi if you do!!

I wish!!! I love Vegas!!!! We'll be visiting in October though! :thumbsup2

How do you like it so far???? Dh keeps looking at jobs that could transfer us there.....and I'm interested in checking it out.

Hi there!! Well, we've only lived here for about a month now so maybe we are still in the honeymoon phase, but so far we love it!!
We used to live in So Cal and would come here often for vacations. Then we ended up moving to Northern MI to be closer to family. That only lasted for 3 years before I'd had it with the snow and we packed up and moved here.

I have talked to alot of people and it's pretty black and white, they either love it or hate it. No gray areas in between. I think where you live plays alot into that, as I've seen some areas I would NOT want to live in.

We live in an area close to Summerlin which is a little bit nicer and more family oriented.
The crime was a concern for me, but then we used to live near Los Angeles, so we are used to being smart about keeping doors locked, alarms on, etc. No late night trips to the ATM machine, or stops at all night liquor stores. Just like in any large city.

I have four kids and have no problem with them being here. In fact, the schools they are in now are, so far, alot better then what we found in MI. But I do know that's definitely not true of all of Clark County, so again, the area that you choose makes all the difference.

Traffic is terrible, but luckily the schools my kids attend are close, one with in walking distance. And my DH's job is located where he can take streets to get to it. The freeway is a nightmare that I refuse to drive on! And this is from someone who used to drive all over L.A. :scared1: DH does okay with it though. He's a better driver then me, lol.

When we are home, I sometimes forget that the Strip is only a short drive away. It's just like any other neighborhood with churches, stores, schools, libraries, etc.

But then it's so cool to be able to go hang out on the Strip when we are in the mood to do so. The other night we were bored so we drove down to the Bellagio and just hung out looking at the fountains. Or we'll go walking around the Forum shops. Stuff like that is fun to be able to do when we want to.

I am sure it's not for everyone. They say between 4,000 and 6,000 people move here monthly. And I'm sure alot also move out. I guess time will tell for us. Right now I'm just happy to be here and not have to face blizzards and 20 degree weather this winter!! :rotfl:

:wave2: We've been here for 14 years. I'm in the grey area but it's getting darker all the time. Of course when you grew up near Huntington Beach there's really only one way to go :lmao: . We live near Green Valley although DD skates in Summerlin almost every mornig. There are other LV disers but I don't think they get on this board much. Welcome to the neighborhood and remember it's a dry heat.

Oh, Huntington Beach is really nice. We've been there a few times. I can see why it's "getting darker" for you. ;) Ah, but you're still close enough to visit.

We've only been here a short time and already I'm itching to take a week-end trip to CA. Grass is always greener I guess. When I was in CA I wanted to be here. :rotfl2:

We looked at the Green Valley area too. In fact, we applied for a house there as well, but someone rented it before we could.

I thought I'd noticed a few DISers in the Vegas area, but I guess you are right. No one really seems to post over here. :confused3

Thanks for the welcome! Although, we've had a few days were the heat wasn't as dry as I remember it. :rolleyes1 I'm ready for some days where the high is under 100. :thumbsup2

Hi Beth,

Welcome to Vegas. I have lived here for three years now. We used to live in Long Island and while I do miss alot about Long Island, I don't miss the snow. We also live close to Summerlin and I'm happy with the school that my 2 girls go to. I did'nt really like Vegas when we first got here but now I love it.

Hi Carole! Thanks for the welcome. And I'm happy to hear that after 3 years you are still enjoying living here. That's good news. :thumbsup2

I wonder if we are close to each other. Do you know where the Boca Park shopping center is? There's a Target in there and some smaller stores and restaurants, including a Cheesecake Factory (one of my personal faves ;) ).

Anyways, we aren't far from that at all. Which is dangerous for both my wallet and waistline!! :rotfl:

My DF and her family lived in Vegas, she did not like it at all. She did not think it was a good place to raise a family. This was 3 years ago, they moved back to GA and were so happy to be back there. The kids were 10 and 12. She did not like the fact that during the in summer they had to stay inside becaue of the heat, the house had a pool, but it was too hot to use it and they did not like the influence of the casinos and the entire general scene Vegas had to offer for raising a family. She was not one for the bright lights of Vegas, nor was her husband. . .I think the straw that broke the camels back is when porn literature starting showing up in her mailbox and literature handed to her and members of the family even when they were out shopping. She also hated the traffic! He had been transferred there and they thought this would be a chance for a new life. . .

Wishing you and your family the best of luck, hope it works out for you. How do you like the heat? I have been there once and could not tolerate the heat when I went to visit my DF.

Wishing you :wizard:

I'm actually further north by Craig & Tenaya (about 10 minutes) but I know exactly where Boca Park is. I shop and eat there a lot. Just last Saturday we ate at Gordon Birsch (sp?) right next to Cheesecake Factory. The food was really good and we got seated right away which is really surprising for Vegas.

My DH and I own a business in Summerlin and have friends that live there so we are there quite often. We have 2 DDs, ages 13 and 10. What ages are your kids?

Hmm, that's interesting. About the porn stuff I mean. I can guarantee that would not happen in this neighborhood. They have TWO Home Owner Associations and are very strict. They have security that patrols the area and the mailboxes are locked.

But again it depends where you live. And of course when we do venture down to the Strip it's everywhere down there. I don't know. It doesn't bother me much. We just ignore it. I am very open and honest with my kids when they ask me questions. They ignore it too and it's just not that big of a deal for us. But I would imagine it bothers some more then others.

As for the heat, yeah, it's bad. But in MI we spent alot of time indoors in the winter too. Last winter was really bad. We didn't get snow until late in the season but man, it came with a vengeance!
It was too cold most days to be out in it, even all bundled up. And the conditions made for dangerous driving.

I can't tell you how many nights I sat up worrying about my DH driving home in another blizzard. :sad2: So I guess in our case, it was either be inside all winter or all summer. Same difference. At least now I don't have to spend a fortune on snow tires, and snow gear. :thumbsup2

The traffic is bad. No getting around that. But if you've driven on any big city freeway (Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, etc) then it probably won't be too different. :confused3
My DH doesn't have any trouble getting around. I could probably do it, but 3 years of driving on country roads in MI made me lose my edge. :rotfl:

I can handle the streets okay, just not the freeway.

In any case, it sounds like they made the right choice for them. Who knows? In 3 years I may be begging my husband to go back to MI, but for now we are still liking it. :)

Okay so you know the area. :thumbsup2 I still get a little turned around when trying to tell people where we live. We are close to Summerlin but not in it so it's hard to explain. lol

I've never been to Gordon Birsch but I'm always on the look out for a new place to try so I'll have to remember that one. Thanks.

That's great you own your own business. I bet it keeps you busy though.
I have 4 kids. My son is 12 (13 in Dec.), my DD is 10 (11 in Nov.) and then I have twin girls who are 7. :)

My older DD will be 14 in Dec and my younger DD will also be 11 in Nov. Is your DD in middle school or elementary? Since my DD started school in NY she started school at 4 because you had to be 5 by Dec. 1. Here the cutoff is earlier so she is a year younger than some of her friends. She started middle school this year. My baby is growing up.

Don't worry about getting turned around in the neighborhood. When we first got here I would curse the 215. I hated it. Now it's no big deal. What was hard for me to get used to is the way the roads are set up. For example, you can be driving down Rainbow and it just stop and then it will pick up again a few blocks down the road. Another pet peeve is how street names change names. By me Durango turns into Rampart as you go south and then it turns into Fort Apache. Why can't it be just one name? It took a little while but you'll get used to it and you'll be whizzing around the roads in no time.

As for people thinking that Las Vegas is "Sin City", we don't live on the strip. Our neighborhood is just like any other suburban neighborhood. I still shop at Kohl's and Target. We hardly ever gamble. We do have great restaurants. I would recommend the Vitner Grill on Charleston for a splurge. The weather is fantastic. Yes it gets very hot in the summer but we don't have to contend with nasty winters. After coming form NY, I will gladly give up commuting to work in the winter. It also is not usually humid (though these past weeks have been more humid than usual). We were in Florida last year and I thought I would die with the humidity. I'll take the dry over the humid any day of the week. Coming from NY, I also don't think that traffic is too bad. Could be worse. We live in a beautiful house and have made wonderful friends. Our business is doing fantastic. I don't think that we would have been so successful in NY.

Looks like our DDs are about the same age. Her b-day is Nov. 19 and she is in middle school. I guess that's what they call it here. It's 6th grade. And she also started when she was 4 because we were in CA and as long as she turned 5 by Dec. something, can't remember now what, then she could start.

So she's younger too. She's tall though and sometimes I have to remind myself she's only 10.
They do grow up so fast!

Great, more confusion!! LOL Actually I've never been good with street names. I'm more of a landmark person. So when ever I give out directions it goes something like, "Turn left at the gas station, then right at the McDonalds, and then again at the tree with the purple flowers." Or whatever. But you get the idea. So as long as they don't take away my landmarks, I'm okay. :rotfl2:

I totally agree. That's why I said, when we are home or driving around our neighborhood, it doesn't even feel like I am in "Vegas". We could be in any town, USA practically. But what's cool, is we are near the Strip so that option is always there if we choose. And I love Target. (see my tag! lol)

I cannot wait for it to get a little cooler. Although since every place is kept so cool the weather doesn't bother me that much. It will be nice to have a winter with temps in the 60's and not in the teens!

I hear ya about Florida. As much as it would be fun to live near WDW, the humidity would do me in. I am happy that now we are only about 4 hours from Disneyland! Since I grew up in So Cal (Los Angeles, then Glendale, then Burbank), that feels like home to me and I cannot wait to get back there and get some annual passes so we can start going again.
Do you all ever make it out to Disneyland?

It sounds like things have really worked out here for you and your family. That's great.
:)

Hey Beth,

My DD's birthday is also Nov. 19th. Small world! She is not tall though. She is on the petite side. I just told her that I have been talking on Disboards to someone whose DD has the same birthday and she was pretty excited.

Funny that you mention Disneyland. I just made reservations this weekend to go during Nevada Day weekend. We went for the first time over Memorial Day weekend and had a blast. We're going to drive down on Oct. 25 and come back on the 28th. I love being so close! We may just have to get the annual passes too.

No way, really?? :rotfl2: That's so funny. What are the odds of that. My DD's name is Noelle, she'll get a kick out of hearing that!

And yes it is a small world since we were planning to go over Nevada Day too! Well, originally I wanted to be there on my b-day which is 10/24 but then the kids would miss school, which I'm okay with, but not so soon and not when we can wait and go on Nevada Day when they are off.

At the time, I'd never heard of Nevada Day but now that we know about it might as well just go then. I'm waiting to see if my husband can get the time off. He works at UMC, but since he's new there it might be hard to start requesting days off right away. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

Are you going to that Mickey's Halloween Treat (I think that's what they call it) at California Adventure? I'm not sure if we will yet or not. :confused3 I've been to MNSSHP and it was just okay for me. I was there on a really busy day though so that probably has alot to do with why I was less then thrilled.

Either way I am so excited to see the park decorated for Halloween. Even though we used to go all the time, they didn't do Halloween back then. We moved to MI the summer of 2004 and they didn't start decorating the whole park until after we moved.
So it will be fun to see everything, especially since I love Halloween. ;)

Hopefully your DH will be able to get time off. What does he do at UMC? My DH is a pediatrician but he doesn't have priviledges at UMC any more. Too far too go and round everyday. We are going to close the office early on Oct. 25 and drive to Disneyland that afternoon. We'll come back Sunday morning. We are going to stay at the Camelot Inn. I remember passing by it on our last trip. It's really close to the parks. We can't wait to see the parks decorated for Halloween. We're probably not going to do the Mickey's Halloween Treat. The ticket presale is sold out for the 26th and I think that the fee is pretty high for trick or treating. We're content to just go to the parks and have our own fun! Now I just have to talk my DH into going sometime for Christmas so we can see the Christmas decorations. Maybe next year!

You'll have to let me know what you think of the Camelot Inn. Since we will have APs and it's too far to drive in one day, we'll definitely be checking out different hotels close by. We used to go all the time but since we lived in CA we never needed a hotel before. lol

I'd love to stay onsite but with a family of 6 we'd need two rooms, and at $200-$400 a night per room, that probably will never happen. :rotfl:

I did notice the 26th was sold out for the Halloween party. That's probably just as well. I'm not sure it's worth it. :confused3

Christmas is really nice! I want to go back then too. We've been before and it's just beautiful. See, this is why you need APs.... :rolleyes1 ;)

Hi, Beth

Wanted to pop in to say hi! :teeth: You're going to get to see the Haunted Mansion Nightmare Before Christmas overlay!!! You're gonna LOVE it. I bought the soundtrack when I went a couple of years ago.

Yeah, keep me posted on those fares from ORD to LAX/SNA/LAS ;)
