At work we are all replaceable

I’m pretty annoying so they’d have to hire an 11 year old girl to replace me. :-)

I’ve been at my job too long and want to leave but I’m lazy and unmotivated. But I know if I left they would find someone to replace me. Same as everyone else.

We are getting close to closing down, my boss has a couple of projects to finish within the next few months then he will decide if he wants to retire or keep going. I'm the bookkeeper and he doesn't even know how to run the software for the books, although since we are a computer consulting company he could figure it out. I take care of all the silly little day to day things that just are. We used to have 100 employees now it's the two of us and I've worked for him close to 30 years. Everyone has always joked I'd be the last one out the door to lock it on the way out when we closed down and that is probably true. I imagine when he does decide to close, I'll still have at least another month of work just to get everything closed out that needs to be legally be done since I'm also a corporate officer.

Dh thought he couldn’t be replaced at his old job and he was partly right. He was a workaholic who worked 16 hour days. The guys they have hired to replace him don’t work that many hours so they only last a few months. I say they are smart for getting out when they did. He is so proud when another guy quits. His old boss is retiring soon so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I had one of those jobs - when I was promoted, they replaced me with 3 people. That was always a source of pride. :)

I work in a very big call centre, so, unfortunately, I wouldn’t be missed. I’m just a butt in a seat.

At home, I definitely am not replaceable. The house would fall apart without my guidance. It’s just the way it is :)

When I left my last job an old co-worker told me I was irreplaceable. They tried 5 times to replace me - all 5 times the people quit within weeks. They couldn't handle the work load or dealing with my old boss.

So I guess I was. The company moved to another state so I don't know if they ever were able to fill my position.

At home I'm not replaceable. When I get home from a solo vacation, my daughter usually says "Thank goodness you are back. I had to do everything while you were gone." LOL

I've experienced a little bit of satisfaction of watching the fallout when I left a job long ago in a completely different field and having old friends who were still there fill me in on the happenings and the skirmishes over the next year. A very close friend is going through this right now since leaving a job she held for 40 years since she left high school. One of her coworkers has already announced she's leaving, moving up her retirement because things are so off kilter without my friend there to keep all the plates spinning.

Another friend was a very experienced and respected nurse manager in a hospital system. Many months before they revealed any cuts were coming they brought in someone whose credentials I can't remember anymore, but it was definitely not heavily weighted on the medical end, nor did they have experience working in the medical field prior. My friend was given minimal information about why this position was created, merely asked to share some information surrounding different tasks she oversaw. After maybe close to a year with this person onboard my friend was informed that this new person was going to be taking over X amount of the tasks my friend had been responsible for. She knew it was strange because most of it was going to require a medical skillset a nurse would have, yet this person absolutely did not, but she attempted to transfer the tasks as required. It merely increased my friend's workload because she had to see to it that the end results were achieved with the false pretense that the other person was performing most of the functions. Within a couple months my friend received word while out on vacation that her job was eliminated. She was shocked, as she had worked there for over 20 years with a stellar reputation. The new "manager" continued to call and email my friend many, many times every day to get questions answered, just as she had when my friend was on the job. After several weeks of this going on some friends and family told her that she needed to stop responding to the requests for help because she didn't work there anymore. She resisted because it just wasn't her nature, but finally got angry when she realized they would continue using her for free if she let them.

I was a sub for 30 some years mostly in grades 4-8. When I announced my retirement (yes I actually got a small pension and health ins ;) ) it did make me feel good when many of the teachers said they would miss me. They even took up a collection and sent me off to my new fun spot....the casino. :yay:

Teaching, when I quit I was easily replaceable with another teacher. We function pretty independently in our own classrooms. (I do like to think my grade level teammates miss me a little bit though!) However, short term absences were terrible - all the planning that went into them, availability of subs, etc. For that reason, I now work at a library. I was just gone for a week taking care of my parents and replacing me was no big deal.

It turned out I was irreplaceable. After I was diagnosed with a non-life threatening but chronic neurological condition, I was forced me out of my job. Before a year had passed, I was called to come back and supervise the closing of the office and liquidating of the business. It made me sad.

I am replaceable but I think I would be missed. I handle all payroll related issues for our clients who use us to run or record and track payroll and file and pay all related taxes. No one else in our office likes to make the calls I make or deal with the agencies I deal with. In turn, I would not want to do their jobs.

Tell them what her consulting rate is ;) 3x what they paid her! Pre-paid in advance, of course!

I left my job suddenly back in August. There was no plan to hire a replacement for me. When my coworkers were told of me leaving all of my duties were split up amongst 4 other people with most going to 2 people. I wonder how that worked out for them. haha!

You bet you can be replaced. On one of our cut backs a top performer was cut. They just divided the work load.

I am one of the few people that can work with a particular kid who is physically aggressive. In all other respects I am nothing special. My boss would have a hard time finding someone who doesn't mind being this kid's punching bag.

Is everything ok low-key? I'm noticing several posts about "last moments", I hope you're not planning on going anywhere
