Black Friday Violence

We don't do Thanksgiving in the UK but recently we've grown rather fond of Black Friday... and the pain that ensues.

Do you traditionally find yourself in the sprawl most years?

No, I think most of the fights of went way down since the stores have started sales earlier and being open all day and having a lot of sales online is helpful as well.

It seems like a lot of the fights were when there were those "got to have it" items. Haven't had one of those in awhile. Although 3 weeks ago they had limits on the number of Fingerlings that one person could buy so maybe they expect that to be the one.

Having so much available online has certainly helped.

There was a shooting at our mall last Black Friday but it was drug deal related, not shopping related.

I think it was 3 or 4 years ago that Walmart had Beats on sale for Black Friday. My son waited in line and after he left there was a shooting.

About 15 years or more ago we shopped a Black Friday event to score a computer for a DD going to school. I can't think of anything that would make me want to participate in anything like that again.

Boxing Day sales used to be huge over here. Went once when I was younger and stupider never again.

Thursday is the day to give thanks for what we have

Friday is the day we forget about that be thankful nonsense and get MORE MORE MORE!!!! It's the day to brawl over a cheap TV, mace the entire crowd for a video game, and trample old laidies or anyone else that gets in the way.

Did it a few times over the years but now I wonder why.

I guess my first time with early Friday sales was just after I'd gotten a new digital camera and the electronics retailer Best Buy had a special on Compact Flash storage cards. They opened at 4 AM on Friday morning. I woke myself up and got to the closest one an hour after they opened. I couldn't really find it where I thought it would be, but I walked around the store and saw an additional promotional display. Over the years I'm sure I've shopped on Black Friday, but it was usually where the retailer had somewhat normal hours. Perhaps closed late, but not open at midnight or perhaps early morning.

The first time I did a midnight Black Friday excursion was maybe a decade ago with my wife. We actually went to a local casino first to play and have Thansksgiving dinner, and then drove to an outlet mall. We arrived at about 1:30 AM and it was bizarre seeing so many people walking around like zombies. We did get some stellar deals. We did it a few more times including once with a friend. I didn't particularly like driving home that late, so one year we even found a hotel room within walking distance of the outlet mall. Previous to that I drove after drinking coffee and then doing my best to make it home. However, there was a rest area on the way home where it's legal to sleep, and I probably should have napped there.

I've heard of a few disasters, like the family that went shopping and went home when dad probably wasn't alert enough to do so safely. He dozed off and actually hit a California Highway Patrol cruiser that was parked dealing with a citizen's flat tire. He had two daughters die. Neither were wearing seatbelts. He had four of his kids in a row made for three, and they apparently had so many purchases that they placed in the third row and packed everyone else into the second row where there weren't enough seatbelts.
