Canadian Buffoon's DISmeet vacation

The Who, What, Where and When

The drone of tires on concrete
sang counterpoint to the music
bleating from the speakers.

I glanced over at Betty
(my semi-trusty GPS)
and saw that I had
about five more hours
of driving ahead of me.

I settled in with the car
on cruise control.
Nothing like a nice drive
on a nice day.

I slipped behind an SUV and
began to pass a semi-trailer.

And then the SUV began to slow down.

"Oh, come on dude.
If you're going to pass...
don't slow down."

I shook my head in wry amusement.
I was stuck, behind the SUV and
beside the rear tires of the semi.

Out of the corner of my eye
I noticed the semi's left
turn signal start to blink.

I began to divide my attention
between the SUV in front of me,
who still wasn't passing
quickly enough and the semi-trailer
on my right, who may or may not
be deciding to change lanes
and force me off the road.

I quickly checked my rear-view mirror
and the shoulder to my left
to make sure I had some escape options.

The SUV in front of me suddenly swerved
wildly off onto the shoulder.

I had no time to react.

As I smashed into the object
on the road at seventy miles an hour,
the resulting explosion
turned my idyllic drive
into anything but.

But I'm getting ahead of myself...

Well, hi there.

Welcome to my ninth TR...
Ninth!! How did that happen?

Well... it happened because of you.
(Yes. You. It's your fault. Stop whining...
That's my job.)

I started writing TRs almost exactly
twelve years ago to the day.
April 2012, to be precise.
And if there's one thing I'm
always careful of,
it's being precise in my writing.
Everything is absolutely accurate.

Ahem. :rolleyes1

(Actually, I do strive for accuracy.
When I'm not... I'll let you know
that I was stretching the truth,
or it will be obvious.
I assure you, however,
the account related above
did happen.)

So why is it your fault?
Because without you, dear reader,
I wouldn't be here.
There's really not much point
in writing if no one reads.
At least, not on a public forum.

And without your comments
I don't know that you've read.

So I want to thank you all.
Thank you for reading along
and thank you for your comments.

In my TRs, I encourage participation.
I love to hear your stories
and anecdotes.

So keep 'em coming. :)

I'm always up for a good read.
It helps take the edge off the crap
that I put out.

Who am I?

Most of you know me already,
but for those who unfortunately
stumbled upon this little ditty,
(not about Jack and Diane)
allow me to introduce myself.

I'm just a regular ol' fart
from Canada with a slight
fondness for semi-aquatic redheads.

I occasionally travel to the
lands of Disney either by myself
or accompanied by a rugrat.
Recently, that rugrat has been my
(now 17 year old) DD.

Traveling with her is okay,
but she does cramp my style
from time to time.

I've learned to deal with that, though.
In a loving, respectful way.

DSC09609_zpsjsvuekxz.jpg

Look at the way we gaze into
each other's eyes.
Clearly we were meant for each other.

Odd that when the protection
of a third party isn't around,
she seems to like to play hard to get.

PhotoPass_Visiting_MK_7804263630_zpshczddy07.jpg

She did eventually agree to marry me, though.
You just have to be persistent
(Some would call that stalking.
I prefer.... romantic.)

ariel1_zpshpp2pwza.jpg

Plying her with irresistible gifts
didn't hurt either.

Okay... so she didn't agree
to marry me.

But I'm sure she's thinking about it.

Mind you it was a bit awkward
proposing to her with the kid crying
"No, Dad! No!" the whole time.

But I can ignore that.

Besides, she makes for a fine
dining companion.

DSC09492b2_zpsfqcx7t3x.jpg

But sometimes it's nice to do
some adulting and dress up
and enjoy the finer things in life.

PhotoPass_Visiting_MK_390954204877_zpsyjgtrv9p.jpg

PhotoPass_Visiting_MK_390954204877b_zpstqafeaqt.jpg

See?
Sometimes ya just wanna
dress up and chill.
Ya know?

Of course there's dressing up
and there's dressing up.

DSC03890_zpsjeifv7tl.jpg

I can go both ways, ya know.

Er... uh...

So! Enough about me.
(Please stop cheering.
It's distracting to others.
Also encourages them.)

I think it's maybe time to
buckle down and start writing,
don't you?

Now let's see.... Ah!
I should tell you what it is
that I will be writing about.

Last summer, I did a little road trip
that managed to fit in a DISmeet or two.

Or more.

And in the fall, I managed to once again
make my way home to WDW.
There I managed a few more DISmeets,
as well as at least one or two events.

You'll have to wait for all of that though.

I won't be running a contest
this time around,
but I will be posting at least one
photo per update with a
"did you see it" hidden in it.
No points for finding it,
just for fun.
Look, don't look. It's up to you.
(No. None in this update.
You can stop looking.)

But just for fun,
do you pronounce it
data or data?

And aren't you weirded out
that you actually pronounced it
both ways in your head?

:scratchin

One last thing before
I get this TR started.

What's your favourite
dessert recipe?

Posting recipes will result in....
Well, nothing at all.
I did say there was no contest.

But I might be tempted to send
a little something
to those who submit one. ;)

Okay, I'll start us off with
a super easy recipe.
It's easy, but it's one that
I've made dozens of times
because people keep asking for it.

It's a great one to bring along
to potlucks or gatherings.

Mars Bars Squares

Ingredients

4 Mars Bars
1/2 cup butter or margarine
3 cups Rice Krispies
Topping:
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup butter or margarine

Instructions

1. Melt the Mars bars in a pot. Be patient, it takes a while.
Keep stirring until all the different textures break down into a smooth mix.
Then stir in the Rice Krispies, coating the cereal completely.

2. Transfer to a well greased 9×9 or 8x8 pan. Flatten with a spatula.

3. Melt the chocolate and butter for the topping, stirring until smooth,
then pour it on top.

4. Cool in the fridge then cut into pieces and serve.

I find that if it's too cool,
the squares have a tendency
to break when cutting.
You might want to try
letting it sit on the counter
for a few minutes
before you try cutting.

Yay! Can’t wait!!!
I pronounced it with a long a and yes, I did say it twice in my head. I’ll have to get back to you on a dessert!

Slight. Of course.

Traveling with her is okay,

I wonder how she would feel about this statement. I have a feeling she might think it rather the opposite...

I'll give you that, she really does seem to be gazing longingly into your eyes...how'd you accomplish this!? Maybe she's really in love...poor Eric...

Besides, she makes for a fine

New favourite!! I was quite fond of the other [solo[ Splash photo you posted, and the story to go along with it, but this one is just too quirky and takes the cake! Mind if I attempt some copycat fan art the next time we take a Splash photo!? I'll credit you as my muse, of course. I aspire to your level of Splash photo prowess someday...

But just for fun,

Can always count on pkondz for your daily mindtrip!

For the record, I typically say [dæɾə] #speechlanguagepathologylife

What's your favourite
dessert recipe?

Okay, recipe is a piece of cake! (hehehe)

Strawberry shortcake:

Mash some strawberries with sugar
Whip whipping cream with sugar and vanilla
(Use of confectioner's sugar = optional)
Locate biscuit
Biscuit bottom --> strawberries --> biscuit top --> strawberries --> whipped cream

Done!

Also, it must be summer. No matter how much you crave it in the winter.

Now, the recipe for my Nannie's biscuits...that's another story! That goes with me to the grave.

Mars Bars Squares

Nom!!

Yea another pkdonz trip report. Can't wait to read all about your travels.

I say daaaaaaaaaaaaata and yes I did try it the other way as well. When you posted this I thought of Data from Star Trek the Next Generation.

Don't forget today is the big St Petes race. I will be watching our Canadians try and race to victory. I won't spoil it for you since I think you said you were taping it.

What's your favourite
dessert recipe?
Here is my favourite and easiest dessert recipe. It is an old family recipe. Doesn't matter when it is made but I guess it would be a fall recipe here in Ontario because that is when you get the best apples.

Apple Crisp
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Grease a deep baking dish

4 cups sliced pared apples (or 6 med apples sliced)
1/3 cup white sugar (sometimes I use maple sugar flakes instead)
2 teaspoons lemon juice
2 tablespoons water

Arrange apples in bottom. Sprinkle with sugar, lemon juice and water

Topping

¾ cup quick rolled oats
1/3 cup pre-sifted all purpose flour
1/3 cup brown sugar firmly packed
¼ cup butter
Can also add a bit of cinnamon to the topping and or apples if you wish. I do that sometimes as well.

Combine oats, flour, brown sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Sprinkle crumbs over the fruit

Bake for about 35 minutes or until apples are tender
Serve warm with plain or whipped cream or you can serve it with ice cream. I just eat it plain.
If apples are tar, sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar in place of 1/3 cup
If apples are firm dry type, use 4 tablespoons water instead of 2.

Yay! A new pkondz TR!

I like how you incorporated your "Greatest Hits" of photos in the introduction.

:lmao:

Well... yeah!

Slight. Of course.

Absolutely.
Barely noticeable.

I wonder how she would feel about this statement. I have a feeling she might think it rather the opposite...

Yes. Yes you can.

So... what are we supposed to use
for the biscuit bottom???

Also, it must be summer. No matter how much you crave it in the winter.

Noted. No winter snacking.

Shoot. You mean I have to wait
six months to try it????

Uncool, Meghan. Uncool.

Now, the recipe for my Nannie's biscuits...that's another story! That goes with me to the grave.

Well.... okay.
But... what do I use instead??

Exactly.

Hi Judy! :welcome: to the TR!

I say daaaaaaaaaaaaata and yes I did try it the other way as well.

I tend to say it the other way, I think.

When you posted this I thought of Data from Star Trek the Next Generation.

Don't forget today is the big St Petes race. I will be watching our Canadians try and race to victory. I won't spoil it for you since I think you said you were taping it.

Thanks for that.
I did remember to record it,
but only because you'd reminded
me the other day.

Haven't watched it yet, though...
although I have seen... oh...
Maybe the first 1/2 dozen laps?

Here is my favourite and easiest dessert recipe. It is an old family recipe. Doesn't matter when it is made but I guess it would be a fall recipe here in Ontario because that is when you get the best apples.

Sheesh! First I have to wait for summer,
now I have to wait for autumn???

mmmmm! I love apple crisp! Thanks!

OK, fine! I finally get in on one of your reports at the beginning where I don't have to catchup on a gazillion quiz pages and learn there ain't one this time.

data or data? I pronounce it the first way.

Love your Martian-themed dessert and that this TR will be a recipe swap, so to speak. Here's two from me:

Chocolate Mint Brownies

1 box brownie mix, prepared in a large pan (9 x 12 or 11 x 7)

Frosting:

3 Tbsp. butter or margarine, softened

1 ¾ cup confectioners sugar

2 Tbsp. milk

¾ tsp. mint extract

Mix frosting ingredients

Note: you may want to make more of the frosting, either 50% more or double.

Spread the Frosting on the cooled brownies

Glaze:

2 oz. chocolate (unsweetened recommended, but I used semi-sweet chocolate chips)

2 Tbsp. butter or margarine

Melt the chocolate with the butter, watch carefully so it doesn’t burn.

Mix and pour over frosting. Cool until glaze is firm in the refrigerator.

Note: you may want to make extra glaze, too.

******************************************************************

Lemon Tarts-

1)Buy premade filo tart shells (in freezer section), lemon curd filling and blueberries (or other fruit) (or keep these on hand)
2) ill tarts with curd
3) Top with blueberry
4) Serve

This is my go-to when I need an emergency dessert.

Mixed berry version- heat frozen mixed berries in a pan with a Tablespoon of water and sweetener (I like Equal). Spoon into tart shells. Dust with confectioners sugar, if desired.

:thumbsup2

Yay! A new pkondz TR!

Yes it is!
:welcome: to the TR Alison!

I like how you incorporated your "Greatest Hits" of photos in the introduction.

Thanks!
Thought I'd do one since...
well, I'm not sure if I've ever
done one!

I say date-a.

You too?

I think I'm in the minority here.
At least that's what the data is showing.

I'll share a dessert recipe when I'm not posting from my phone.

Standing by!

That's exactly what it was for.
Just to catch your attention.

:welcome: to the TR, Meghan! :goodvibes

Thanks!! I figured as much, but I didn't want to draw too much attention and make the other readers feel bad.

"I make my dad... Well... not quite cool, but cool-er."

Oh? I think I typically say the other.

Yeah, I think I'm probably in the minority. Shorts a's for me.

Well.... okay.
But... what do I use instead??

I recommend finding a biscuit recipe you like, or getting some from a bakery/market, etc. None of those weird little sponge cakes they sell in the grocery store for this purpose. Definite downgrade!
