Canadian Buffoon's DISmeet vacation - 09/14 - Bowled Over

We’re good. I have hand surgery scheduled for July so we wanted to get in a quick vacation bfore that. Since our AP’s still have a few months on them, and our flights are paid for with points, Disney seemed the obvious choice. (I wanted to drive to a B&B in Bar Harbor but the free flights over the skyrocketing price of gas swayed me.)

There was a reality show a few years ago following the crew on an aircraft carrier. It was fabulous. They did show the planes trying to land in rough seas which was totally nerve-wracking to watch. It could take many many tries and there was the spectre of running out of gas to deal with as well. Anybody else see it?

If anyone’s headed to Boston, I highly recommend visiting an older ship- the USS Constitution. You can tour the ship for FREE! It’s really cool and there’s a fun museum there for the kids too. I almost died there when I was little, but don’t let that stop you. (I went over to look down a hole in the wooded deck with a chain going down, and you could see the black ocean below. It was a large hole. Just right for a kid of my size. I was about 3or 4 and my older sister grabbed me right before I tumbled in. My mother still talks about that. They’ve got those holes blocked off now but back then you were on your own.)

Finally made it over here. Loved the beginning of the TR. Not certain I would drive that long in a day....KUDDOS to you my good man.

or this one from the classic,
Easy Rider.
Loved that movie. Not sure but I think it's the first movie Jack Nicholson was in.

I turned her off.
I have that effect on women.
Are you surprised since you have learned from my TR size matters?:lmao:

I wonder how many of you
will understand that reference?
I'm old enough I got it.

popcorn::

Okay...
Let's go for a quick
little ride down:

P1040486_zpsjcoxkq9o.jpg

OK you are really trying to confuse me or diffuse everyone with mis information. As far as I know you were no where near the 101.

But when I went to pick up the bike,
I was told I needed to put down
a $3,000 deposit.
I had room on my credit card,
but still... many people wouldn't
necessarily have that.

I don't mean to be harsh, but you know, if you don't have $3K free on your credit card, you probably shouldn't be renting a bike of that nature or price range. I haven't priced Harley's lately, but last time I checked they were pret-ty pricey!

My view for the next few hours:
(note the oh-so-appropriate tune.)

I don't know, I might choose "Bad Motor Scooter" by Montrose. :rolleyes1 I mean you aren't checking in, and we know you left.....

Highway 101 wasn't going to get me
all the way to my destination,
but it would get me most of the way.

See now you are totally messing with my mind. I even had to look this up on Wikipedia to know that I wasn't crazy.

The south terminus of US 101 is in Los Angeles, about one mile (1.6 km) east of downtown Los Angeles at the East Los Angeles Interchange, also known as the "Four Level". This southernmost portion is named the Santa Ana Freeway, inheriting that title as the northerly extension of the roadway now known as I-5.

And on this beautiful California sunny day,
the journey definitely was the destination.

I passed through a few picturesque towns.
I could've taken hundreds of photos
and regretted that I didn't have more
time to do so.
You'll just have to be content with these
two shots I took In Carlsbad.

I can see that. And Carlsbad is most definitely off the I-5.

Notice the movie that's playing?

Interesting that....

Several of the little towns
I passed through looked
like they were frozen
in time back in the 50s or 60s.

That's for sure. I could say that about where I am now.

I did take a few opportunities
to take photos of sand and sea:

Now that's Highway 1!

There was a mile or so of
stopped cars in front of me.
Five lanes.
Full of cars and trucks.
None of them moving at all.
Might as well turn the ignition
off and relax.
It's gonna be a while.

At least.... that's what would
have happened if I'd been
driving a car.

Well you might want to do that, but it would be a little rough on your starter. You see the cars move 1-2 feet every few minutes, and if the gap in front of you gets more than a car length or so, they people behind you get rather irate and begin honking wildly, even though you can hardly go five feet ahead. Go figure!

I then passed about a mile of cars.
I passed the bottle neck,
within about five minutes.
(I never did see why four lanes were blocked,
I was too busy watching the cars around me)

You never see it. The accident is usually removed hours before you pass the point, but the back up remains for many hours after the initial incident is gone.

And about 20 minutes later,
I arrived at my destination.

I was going to go on a boat.

I've heard of this place before...

Most people won't mess
with a bike or a biker's stuff.
Probably because one percent
of the bikes you might mess
with might be the last thing
you mess with.

Just sayin'...

Yeah, I'm not messing with any biker's stuff! :scared:

I feel the need...
If you can't finish that line,
then you need to see the movie.
Stat.

Sorry.

I walked in and was greeted
by a friendly young lady.
(Much better than the last place.)

That's good, people in retail should always be friendly.

Not everyone in the US
knows where Winnipeg is.
Or have even heard of it.

 I do!

Come to think of it....
I really can't think of a good reason
to care where North Dakota is.

Having a basic knowledge of your country's geography? :confused3

I had to go all the way to San Diego
to meet a fellow Canadian!

I had a DISmeet coming up,
and I didn't wanna be late!

Really? You did all that beforehand?

And... did you see it?

::yes:: There was one aircraft that stood out in an other worldly sort of way. Not to mention its pilot.

We’re good. I have hand surgery scheduled for July so we wanted to get in a quick vacation bfore that.

Oh! Good luck with the surgery!

Since our AP’s still have a few months on them, and our flights are paid for with points, Disney seemed the obvious choice.

::yes::

Seems like a no-brainer.

(I wanted to drive to a B&B in Bar Harbor but the free flights over the skyrocketing price of gas swayed me.)

Aren't the prices insane??
Hello! I have places to go, you know!

There was a reality show a few years ago following the crew on an aircraft carrier. It was fabulous. They did show the planes trying to land in rough seas which was totally nerve-wracking to watch. It could take many many tries and there was the spectre of running out of gas to deal with as well. Anybody else see it?

I did not know about that.
Which is too bad.
It sounds like a really interesting show.

If anyone’s headed to Boston, I highly recommend visiting an older ship- the USS Constitution. You can tour the ship for FREE! It’s really cool and there’s a fun museum there for the kids too.

Thanks for the tip! :)

I almost died there when I was little, but don’t let that stop you. (I went over to look down a hole in the wooded deck with a chain going down, and you could see the black ocean below. Holy crap!
Maybe put a little rope
around it or something???

Finally made it over here.

:welcome: to the TR!

Loved the beginning of the TR.

Thanks! :)

Not certain I would drive that long in a day....KUDDOS to you my good man.

Not certain I should have
driven that long in a day!

Loved that movie. Not sure but I think it's the first movie Jack Nicholson was in.

Actually, it was his 18th!

Are you surprised since you have learned from my TR size matters?:lmao:

It explained so much!

I'm old enough I got it.

popcorn::

;)

You're taking a break from studying...
and spending it here?!?!?

Been having DL withdrawls and WDW cravings lately ahah

Well, I'm glad you're enjoying it.
When are you done classes?
Or are you going to go right
into summer courses?

Straight through, I'm in 3 classes for the summer but taking the fall off before the last year and a half of school after my transfer :D

Too bad, it's pretty impressive! ::yes::

I love those kinds of things but San Diego was super last minute decision and so we didn't have quite enough time.

More words good.
No words bad.
Speak more words.

Got it! Speak more, listen less.

OK you are really trying to confuse me or diffuse everyone with mis information. As far as I know you were no where near the 101.

More on this in a bit...

I don't mean to be harsh, but you know, if you don't have $3K free on your credit card, you probably shouldn't be renting a bike of that nature or price range.

Hmmm.... maybe?
I think the bike rental
was around $200-$300?

I can easily see a tourist,
using his card for hotel and food.
And being worried about an
extra unplanned $3K on it.

I haven't priced Harley's lately, but last time I checked they were pret-ty pricey!

Nah. They're practically giving 'em away.

:rolleyes1

I don't know, I might choose "Bad Motor Scooter" by Montrose. :rolleyes1 I mean you aren't checking in, and we know you left.....

But the temptation to just turn it off
and wait for the traffic to start moving
would have been pretty big.

You never see it. The accident is usually removed hours before you pass the point, but the back up remains for many hours after the initial incident is gone.

It was still there.
I know I passed something
that was blocking 4 lanes.
Whether it was a semi
or construction....
I really don't know.

Yeah, I'm not messing with any biker's stuff! :scared:

Good plan.
I remember going over to an obvious
Hells Angel's bike to take a peak.
R yelled at me not to touch it.

Right... Like I'm going to do that.

:sad2:

Really?
You've never seen Top Gun?

How is this possible?

That's good, people in retail should always be friendly.

They should.
Or... the opposite of the
ones at the last place
Harley shop I was in.

Yeah, but you have an unfair
advantage!

Having a basic knowledge of your country's geography? :confused3

Hmmm.... Well, you'd hope
for that.
But it isn't always the case.

Really? You did all that beforehand?

I have skillz, baby!
I left very early.

::yes:: There was one aircraft that stood out in an other worldly sort of way. Not to mention its pilot.

;)

Been having DL withdrawls and WDW cravings lately ahah

Well... this is the place to come
(the DIS, I mean, not necessarily here.)

Straight through, I'm in 3 classes for the summer but taking the fall off before the last year and a half of school after my transfer :D

Long haul.

Transfer?

I love those kinds of things but San Diego was super last minute decision and so we didn't have quite enough time.

I get that.
Go again.
Don't skip it.

;)

Got it! Speak more, listen less.

Why should you be any different
than anyone else!

Well... this is the place to come
(the DIS, I mean, not necessarily here.)

This is the best place to come, just reading a bunch of TR's but your's is my favorite and the only author I keep coming back too.

Long haul.

Transfer?

I'm at a college right now, 1 and a half years of business and 2 and a half of computer science. Transferring to a four year school to get the bachelor of science.

I get that.
Go again.
Don't skip it.

;)

Most likely going in December with the family.

Why should you be any different
than anyone else!

I try to be a nice listening person though!

This is the best place to come, just reading a bunch of TR's but your's is my favorite and the only author I keep coming back too.

Really???

Wow! That's...
pretty flattering.

I'm at a college right now, 1 and a half years of business and 2 and a half of computer science. Transferring to a four year school to get the bachelor of science.

Okay,
So the college is not the same
as the four year school.
Right?

You're talking about moving
to a University for the degree.

Most likely going in December with the family.

Nice!
Well, make sure you try
to check it out. :)

I try to be a nice listening person though!

How very Canadian!

Really???

Wow! That's...
pretty flattering.

Yea really! Your's is my favorite.

Okay,
So the college is not the same
as the four year school.
Right?

You're talking about moving
to a University for the degree.

Exactly, currently at little ol' Douglas College, transferring to Simon Fraser University

Nice!
Well, make sure you try
to check it out. :)

I should have a good chance, going with girlfriends brothers who are all military guys. Any other recommendations in San Diego?

How very Canadian!

I try, don't want to be sent down to Uncle Donald's country, unless it is all the way down to WDW.

Yea really! Your's is my favorite.

Well.... Gee! :goodvibes

Exactly, currently at little ol' Douglas College, transferring to Simon Fraser University

Got it!
It'd be like taking courses at RRCC
here in Winnipeg and then
switching to UM or UW.

I should have a good chance, going with girlfriends brothers who are all military guys. Any other recommendations in San Diego?

Yep. Ya got a shot.

I don't really have other recommendations
as that's all I did.
But I was going to check out
La Jolla.
It's supposed to be really nice.

I try, don't want to be sent down to Uncle Donald's country, unless it is all the way down to WDW.

:rolleyes1

I can easily see a tourist,
using his card for hotel and food.
And being worried about an
extra unplanned $3K on it.

Then use a different one. You talk like someone only has one credit card.

Okay. So I had to go check, too.

I know I wasn't on the I5.
A little looking and...
I guess it was the 1.
Or at least for some of the way it was.

Highway 1 I'll believe. You can take that almost all the way to San Diego.

I guess what threw me was....

That 101 logo was on the road.

That's weird. I wonder why and it in the past it extended that far south.

Oh? You mean where you live?
I didn't notice that.
Or are you someplace else right now?

Have you missed my BBQ quest on FB? I may be posting a mini IRL update on my TR. It seems I have finished writing it as of last night.

Yeah, I wouldn't really have turned off the car.
They were moving as you describe.
But the temptation to just turn it off
and wait for the traffic to start moving
would have been pretty big.

When you live here, you get used to this kind of traffic. Either that or you commit Hari Kari.

It was still there.
I know I passed something
that was blocking 4 lanes.
Whether it was a semi
or construction....
I really don't know.

Huh. Normally they get those things off the road or at least to the side pretty quickly. I guess you got there faster on a bike than folks in a car would.

Good plan.
I remember going over to an obvious
Hells Angel's bike to take a peak.
R yelled at me not to touch it.

Right... Like I'm going to do that.

Silly woman!

Really?
You've never seen Top Gun?

How is this possible?

You'd be surprised at how many 80s movies I missed. Too busy practicing and studying.

They should.
Or... the opposite of the
ones at the last place
Harley shop I was in.

The people at the Harley shop we went to yesterday were very nice.

Yeah, but you have an unfair
advantage!

Why do I have an unfair advantage? Because i have visited Canada multiple times? :confused3

Hmmm.... Well, you'd hope
for that.
But it isn't always the case.

:sad2: I am always sad about my fellow Americans lack of geographical knowledge. While many people can point out all 50 states, some may not even know some of their names much less where they are located.

Then use a different one. You talk like someone only has one credit card.

Oh, you.
Stickler for details!

Yes I had another one.
And yes I had room on both.

;)

Highway 1 I'll believe. You can take that almost all the way to San Diego.

Almost. :)

That's weird. I wonder why and it in the past it extended that far south.

No idea!
Maybe?

I did a bit of research and
it used to go further
but was replaced in 1964.

Have you missed my BBQ quest on FB? I may be posting a mini IRL update on my TR. It seems I have finished writing it as of last night.

I have missed it!
I don't facebook much.
I will take a quick look
at the first couple items
and that's about it.

Gonna have to go look at
your posts, specifically.

When you live here, you get used to this kind of traffic. Either that or you commit Hari Kari.

I'm betting you have
a lot of that.

A lot.

Huh. Normally they get those things off the road or at least to the side pretty quickly. I guess you got there faster on a bike than folks in a car would.

Much quicker on the bike. :)

You'd be surprised at how many 80s movies I missed. Too busy practicing and studying.

Time to go back and watch!

The people at the Harley shop we went to yesterday were very nice.

Was it Bartel's
by Marina Del Rey?

Why do I have an unfair advantage? Because i have visited Canada multiple times? :confused3

No, silly.
Because you happen
to have a friend
who lives there!

:sad2: I am always sad about my fellow Americans lack of geographical knowledge. While many people can point out all 50 states, some may not even know some of their names much less where they are located.

Not good.
But I guess you could probably
say that about any country's peoples.

Got it!
It'd be like taking courses at RRCC
here in Winnipeg and then
switching to UM or UW.

Exactly, I am super excited and nervous.

Yep. Ya got a shot.

I don't really have other recommendations
as that's all I did.
But I was going to check out
La Jolla.
It's supposed to be really nice.

La Jolla, is wonderful we did go there as the girlfriend is lover of all things in the ocean and they have sea lions!

Exactly, I am super excited and nervous.

You got this!
If I can do university,
anyone can.

La Jolla, is wonderful we did go there as the girlfriend is lover of all things in the ocean and they have sea lions!

I was pretty bummed
that I ran out of time.
It was high on my list.

Just below aircraft carriers.

Is it?
I'm not surprised.
I really enjoyed it.
And am especially glad
I did it on a bike.

If you liked that, you should come further north and do the Oregon Coast. More rocky and "wild". Equally beautiful!

I debated whether to wait
for a shot with or without.
I prefer... with.

Me too. The wind was nice - you wouldn't have noticed/seen it without her in it.

Thanks!
The "mist" is actually water blowing
off the ocean.
It was windy. Lots of surfers.

Nice! So bigger waves too.

You should!
You'd enjoy it for sure.

Of that, I''m certain! Although, I do think I'd enjoy the India Star just as much. Such a gorgeous clipper.

:lmao:

I have a feeling we're not going
to convince the other.

And, yet... I'll still tease and chide you.

Really surprised me.
But... if it's on a carrier... they must
have foldable wings.

Well that makes total sense. Duh. (Feel dumb right now.)

I don't recommend it for your first solo.

Well, that's no fun!

:lmao:

Next time she starts acting up
I'm gonna unplug her!

She might be like Hal... Be careful! Watching.... always watching.

You got this!
If I can do university,
anyone can.

Don't sell yourself short like that!

I was pretty bummed
that I ran out of time.
It was high on my list.

Just below aircraft carriers.

It was pretty great. I am FINALLY processing the photo's I took(like right as I type). I have picked out the ones I am going to use so now I just need to finish editing and start writing!
