"Chanting" no longer allowed at WD

It is EXTREMELY difficult for CM's to stop the groups from chanting (or climbing, stealing, breaking, or any other inappropriate behavior).

This was explained to me when I worked at WDW by a Brazilian co-worker, who pointed out that in Brazilian class structure, CM's are viewed to be "lower class" because they are working service positions. So these Brazilian kids are coming from "upper class" families, and are taught that the working class is beneath them, and as such hold no authority over them.

I'm not sure how true that is of all of Brazil, or if it was just the area my friend was from... but it does make sense.

LOVED this post :). Really, what can a CM (or several CM's) DO? Machine guns? Very likely to not occur :).
I wonder.... what would happen if every single person in line started chanting, in unison - "SHUT UP - YOU ARE VIOLATING THE RULES". Why, this could be the new "Queue Entertainment" :).

When we were at Fantasmic, we experienced their highly enthusiastic "chanting." I had no idea this was an actual "problem."

We smiled at them, not realizing that they actually cause problems, and their reactions to our pleasant reaction was hilarious. We became the center of their attention. They "escorted" us to our bus and waved as it drove off.

At the time, it was kind of fun.

Seriously, we had no idea that this activity was troublesome to others.

The Orland Passholder stated "Walt Disney World Insider tells me that due to an incident involving an Argentinian Tour Group at the Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World has taken action for the safety and enjoyment of other guest in the parks."

I for one am happy about this.
Finally!!!!

It's not so much a problem in places like pre-show Fantasmic, when the CM's are often trying to hype the crowd and get them to do the wave etc. The problem stems from this behavior continuing into less appropriate venues, such as hotel rooms at 3 am, or onboard Pirates of the Caribbean.

That is terrible. I had no idea that this went on. Granted, we've only been to WDW 5 times in 11 years, but still, I'm surprised that July was the first time we had any experience with that behavior. I guess we have been very fortunate.

We stopped staying at All Stars Music because of the cheerleading groups' obnoxious behavior around the resort. Now that we stay deluxe, we don't have to deal with their nonsense anymore.

Yeah, that's pretty frustrating as well... but the CM's have more control over it because the little brats can be disqualified from their competitions for breaking the rules.

Oh we were there in July and these groups were very obnoxious. Thank goodness if it is true. I travel with teen boys and even they wanted to avoid them it they saw them coming....I feel it was getting worse by the years...this year even the chaperons were encouraging them to be disruptive.

And yet the economy of Brazil is falling off a cliff. What is there to be cocky about?

It would be interesting to get a translation of whatever it is they're chanting.

This is a funny thread. I have laughed out loud at some of the posts. The last time we encountered this was in December. We were in line at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, inside were it is already noisy as part of the atmosphere of the ride. These folks began their chant/screaming, something about Brazil. I simply started chanting USA! USA! USA! I thought, well, what the heck, I guess we are going to have a scream off. They were so shocked to see this nice, middle-aged lady with pearl earrings and a cashmere twin set acting like, well, acting like them, that it shocked them into silence. They all stood there, gaping. As soon as they were quiet I told them to knock it off. Interestingly, some (American) lady was offended by my USA! chanting and by telling the kids to be quiet. I guess I was not embracing the diversity or what not. But if the chanting has been stopped that would be excellent news.

Oh, and I laughed about the Pop Warner cheerleader comments. Funny, not much is said about the Pop Warner football players. It has been our experience, with both our children and grandchildren, that the players were much better behaved than the cheerleaders. The key with the boys is for their coaches to nip disruptive behavior in the bud. A threat of suspension usually does the trick. With the cheerleaders, the more you try to stop it, the worse it gets. I would travel with the players, but refused to have any responsibility for the cheerleaders.

Years ago at ASM, the cheerleaders literally took over the entire resort. We couldn't even step out of our room without bumping into one. They took over the resort grounds to rehearse and stayed up all hours hanging out right outside the rooms. When we made a comment to a chaperone, the response was, "They're just kids having fun. Don't be a spoiled sport." We were told to "Lighten up, you're on vacation." by another one. Others just walked away. The CM's at the resort seemed overwhelmed by them and did nothing.

On that trip we decided never to stay Value again. They'd never be able to afford Deluxe, so that's where we stay from now on.

The chanting didn't bothered me until they do it in a ride like pirates of the Caribbean or in the star wars ride, or when they push and shove little kids out the way in theater attractions like philarmagic , my wife elbowed one on the face because the pushed my 6 yr old into the door.

"Walt Disney World has gotten back to us to let us know that this is specifically “Cast Member Rumor” and no specific policy has been changed at Walt Disney World. However if they become disruptive or dangerous it falls under already existing policy." lol

Think sporting event loudly repeating the same phase over and over and over and over and over as loud as you can with everyone around you joining in.

Got it. Now, rather than Gregorian Monks? Perhaps, when confronted by chanting, everyone else should start yelling, at the top of their lungs....

"DENNISE IS HOT! MISS PIGGY IS A BAG!"
The phrase could be most interesting, translated into any non-English language:).

All personal opinion - others may choose to disagree with this personal statement....

There has always been a ban on chanting. Wonder what the "action" is they spoke of. I have tried to look at the article 3 times this morning after a friend posted it but couldn't get it to open.

When we tried to enforce it all you could do was go to the group leader and ask them to quiet their kids down. Most of the time they said they don't speak english and walked off. The worst safety issue is when all 200 of them choose a spot for fireworks that is not okay or safe.

The easiest ones to calm down are the Pop century players/cheerleaders and the other cheer groups. A CM just needs to remind them they can get disqualified for rude behavior or practice inside the parks and suddenly they are angels.

In this day and age, pretending to not speak English...or actually not speaking English...should be no excuse. There are on-demand live translation services...all it takes is your businesses code and a cell phone and you can have someone on the line in less than a minute.
