Yes, @mi*vida*loca is right, I do live in NYC. We have public, parochial, private, and charter schools here. As far as the public schools go you can attend any specialised school you pass the academic test for or meet it's other qualifications. Play your cards right and there are some great public high schools here. I don't know whether the non specialized public high schools are still zoned by zip code/neighborhood or not.Where do you live with 6 yr high schools? Or that you get to have a choice in schools? Here your choice is what ever school your address is assigned to, or pay for expensive private schools, which are almost all religious affiliated.
There are specialized public high schools? The only specialized public schools around here are the alternative schools for kids with issues.Yes, @mi*vida*loca is right, I do live in NYC. I threatened one of my kids with that once. He's almost 40 now so obviously survived the "horrible" things I told him .There are specialized public high schools? The only specialized public schools around here are the alternative schools for kids with issues.
We have that in our district. The “academies” & magnet schools have more rigorous academics & students who can get in are allowed to go there regardless of their zip codes. There are specialized public high schools? In the district I live in we have academy programs housed within the high schools. Like the one for the high school that is assigned to my house is public safety and green tech. There are specialized public high schools? You are lucky to have had family vacations into college. So many young adults find their world has broadened by then. Summer internships, new friends living in distant locales, jobs at local tourist spots. We have always pulled the kids out just because we hate going in the summer when it’s hot. The teachers never had issue with it and we even pulled our high schoolers out without incident. College was a different story though, we tried to work around winter breaks. Now, both my brothers refuse to pull their kids out for any reason and it makes it difficult to do large family trips but to each their own. I think family time and trips together is more important
I do feel lucky. My college kids/ grown children love Disney and traveling in general and we still go on family vacations. I don’t think their horizons will ever grow so much that they won’t do disney with usYou are lucky to have had family vacations into college. I anticipate DGD will be working as a camp counselor or math tutor after next summer and am as ready as I'll ever be to let her grow to the next step in her life.
I would at least think it's possible. That way you don't get heartbroken if it happens. I've seen how some posters are so distraught over what most consider an extremely normal process of life especially when you start adding in significant others, kids, etc. There's no guarantee all will want to do the same vacation (or vacation in general).I don’t think their horizons will ever grow so much that they won’t do disney with us
We don’t expect them(or want them) on all vacations with us. Most my kids are adults and live across the country but we still try and meet every couple years for a Disney vacation. DS 12 and I just flew to Arizona to see DD26 and her husband and we met my parents and brother with his family at Disneyland. DS 29 is a beach bum and only goes every once in a while with us. We have had a lot of great memories traveling with our children over the years and even if they don’t come with us, they have learned how important that family time is, no matter where you go. My kids have just always loved those magical trips to Disney world and talk about it all the time. I wouldn’t be upset if they didn’t want to go, just surprisedI would at least think it's possible. Vacations shift and change, interests change, priorities shift, it happens and in a nutshell life happens
I fully understand. It has nothing to do with your great memories or anything else really. You can have many memories and yet things change. I think that's why sometimes it's hard for people to see that. I had amazing trips growing up at the Lake of the Ozarks but despite that it must have been oh IDK 12-13 years in between trips and I started going with my in-laws rather than visiting my grandparents who hadn't lived there in years. It's also been several years since we last went to the Lake. Those memories don't go away they morph into new memories and the day may come where a new destination is where its at that's all I was saying. We don’t expect them(or want them) on all vacations with us. B/c ppl will say you don’t value family time.
No one should judge anyone for anything, but they do. There may not be plenty of time in the days kids aren’t in school for all families. I was only responding to the pp who asked what could possibly by the reason for judging ppl for not taking their kids out of school. Bottom line is ppl should do what works best for their family & mind their business about what other ppl do.If you choose to take your children out of school for vacation, that is your choice. But nobody should judge you for NOT doing so. There is plenty of time over the 185 days a year that children are not in school to spend quality family time.
True but people do pose questions about it. If one is doing what works for their family without respects to what anyone else thinks they wouldn't need to pose the question at all. As is people do and you then get differing opinions on the matter as one would expect.Bottom line is ppl should do what works best for their family & mind their business about what other ppl do.

We spent a fortune resting a house down the shore for a week an hour away just so the older kids could come and go. Dd23 came down 4 nights with her boyfriend, ds21 has an internship in the city so came down 2 nights (missing 1 day of work). Dd23 starts a job next month, I’m guessing she won’t want to waste her 1 week of vacation with us! This might be our go to summer vacation now, with dd18 in college, and the 16 year olds expected to get jobs (since they’ve been working since 14).You are lucky to have had family vacations into college.
