Conquering Orlando between Christmas and NYE: "low expectations and HIGH crowds."

Glad you enjoyed Vivo.......I‘m laughing at you having the chilli flakes removed........lol......

They never put enough on for Tom and I......and there’s more red pepper flakes to come????

You haven't seen us get our meal yet... ;)

Davy 4 continued (again!)...

I'm back! So, as we waited .. and waited... and waited... at Vivo for our dinner, we had a great chat. My sweetie:

DC2B6F31-84D0-4D6F-B702-A23B8199C21C.jpeg

FINALLY -- the food came! A different server delivered the food and rushed off... and, my dish had red pepper flakes in it. DRAT. I was SO HUNGRY by this point (and, it was a busy time of year, so mistakes will happen)... I ate it. I tried to pick around the flakes. Davy had gotten lemonade along with water thankfully because I needed ALL THE WATER with the flakes in my dish. It was really good... but would have been better in my opinion without the flakes. Davy and I inhaled our food. Our waiter did not come by once. He finally did -- and we wanted the check to get to the parks -- and he saw that I had red flakes in the broth that was left. He said, "oh no! I told them no flakes!" Again, nothing was offered to compensate for this... not that I needed anything, but it's always nice when a mistake is made to try to correct it. Overall, we liked the food and would try it again when it's less busy and see how it goes.

So far this trip, we had had really good luck with crowds. I figured this was all about to stop. Davy and I walked to the parks saying our trip motto, "LOW expectations. HIGH crowds!" We were just happy to be warm, honestly.

I had two holiday items I REALLY wanted to do: see the Hogwarts Castle show and try hot butterbeer. I HATE regular butterbeer (which is weird as I LOVE butterscotch, but it's just too sweet for me). So, we headed to Islands of Adventure first. We head to Hog's Head first. Davy gets a pumpkin juice I think. I got my first (OF MANY) hot butterbeers... OMG. I fell deeply in love instantly!!!

I grabbed another to go to head to the Christmas castle show... it was crowded, but not as awful as I had imagined it would be. I took no pictures as I just wanted to watch and enjoy. I loved it. Davy was "meh" about it. LOL.

We then decided to jump over to the US side. First up: RRR. Davy's favorite! He loves doing the secret songs. I always do "I Will Survive." We did the single rider line -- still a pretty long wait... maybe 30 minutes? But, NOT TOO bad. The parade was going on then and I saw some of it. Davy could care less. LOL. He wanted to do Jimmy Fallon (only person I know who loves this ride). There was no standby available... I think it was because of the parade for some reason... Anyway, we went to Mummy. NO wait there for single rider. We decide to go again. Then, there's a bit of a wait for single rider, but not TOO bad. Maybe 10-15 minutes. The parade had finished I suppose, so folks were getting on rides again. We decided to try Jimmy Fallon. Got in -- really NO wait. The panda was out and about. It tried to engage Davy. He did not really care. LOL.

We sit down, and the guy behind us says, "I get motion sick and already feel queasy... will I be ok?" He was directly behind Davy and I thought, "oh no..." But, the guy did NOT hurl thankfully. He did look green though.

We then went to Diagon Alley. We got on Gringotts -- single rider again. We started playing 20 questions about Star Wars characters. The young couple next to us thought it was fantastic, so they started playing too. We had about a 20-30 minutes wait I think. This is probably my favorite non-water ride at Universal. I really love it. After, I think Davy did some wand spots... I believe I bought some Slytherin pants (yessssss!) at my favorite store in the parks: Borgin and Burkes. I also grabbed ANOTHER hot butterbeer because YUM. It was now a full-on addiction!

Then, we decided it was time to call it a night. We called a Lyft. The Lyft driver was a cranky old guy. He said at one point how there are SOOO many drivers now and he was one of the FIRST ride share drivers. I had to interrupt him to tell him he had just missed the exit to our hotel. A-hem.

Anyhoooo.. we made it back. Decided to just sleep in until we woke up. Mean dad next door started to act up again, but I banged on the wall and he stopped. We had a peaceful night.

Tomorrow.. moving to Royal Pacific!!

Fellow spicy wuss here!
I don't even like to look at a shaker of red pepper flakes, yikes!

I get medium salsa if I feel adventurous, lol!!

lol....I was so worried the food we ordered last year wasn't spicy!!! Thankfully you were fine...….

Oh dear!!!! Try sitting at the bar next time.....we don't wait for a table and eat there.....service is always fabulous there!

Glad you had such a good park day, and Davy wasn`t a target for pukey guy in the end!!!

Looking forward to your RP part of the trip.......

Day 5 (Dec. 30)

Our last morning at the DoubleTree at SeaWorld. It is such a beautiful hotel (and, just the right price as we had three free nights!). We woke up fairly early -- can't remember what time exactly. But, we packed up and headed out. As we got downstairs, we saw folks in pants, sweaters, jackets... we were wearing shorts and short sleeve shirts. It was in the 70s!!!!

Grabbed a Lyft to Royal Pacific. So nice to get there. We had an easy check-in, dropped off our luggage, and started off for the parks. Grabbed a pic in front of the tree first.
1301CAB3-DFC1-432B-8C10-9B7ECD0301CB.jpeg
As it was 4 degrees this morning here in Kansas City, really miss being in shorts!!!

In any event, we decided to take the boat to the park. I'm not sure why as we usually walk.

I did not take many pics this day and don't remember a lot. I know we rode RRR again. Davy told me to try this one "secret" number... it was "Rainbow Connection," which is quite hilarious when you're swooshing around on this roller coaster. I know I also did the Beastie Boys "Sabotage" once too after the guy next to me suggested it. First times I did not do "I Will Survive."

We also obviously took the Hogwarts Express this day as I have a pic!

C6C95F80-4CCC-4CDD-8055-8579777E1FC3.jpeg

I also know I think I had FOUR hot butterbeers this day. YUM. LOL.

Oh, and we ate at Leaky Cauldron for lunch. While waiting or lunch, I heard a lady telling her group that she was going to try butterbeer again, but she thought it was too sweet last time. I said, "excuse me for butting in... but, have you tried HOT butterbeer?" She said no. I said, "I think regular is too sweet also -- but the hot butterbeer is AMAZING!" Davy and I shared fish and chips and I tried all of the desserts... and liked none of them... but had yet another hot butterbeer. As we were leaving, the lady from the line stopped me and said, "Thank you SO much! You are so right! This is DELICIOUS!" I'm spreading the addiction! (Yet I couldn't get Davy to even try a sip!)

We rode some more rides... then, I saw Puss in Boots! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Antonio Banderas (LOVE!). So, I'm a Puss fan. I asked Davy if he'd mind stopping so I could get a pic. He minded. :( He REALLY hates characters in parks now. Has for a few years. I can sometimes beg him to take MY pic, but it's rare. Sigh... (other than that, he's a great kid who rarely says, "I don't want to," so I just didn't have the heart to demand we stop.

Anyway, at some point, we got a text that our room was ready. We decided to go back and rest up before returning for some water rides. I think I took a nap, read, played on my phone... Davy had gotten some great books from my pal Pam. One was a Dungeons & Dragon book. If your kid ever does D&D, you know how mind-numbingly boring conversations can get (same with Minecraft) -- this comes into play later...

We finally decided to mosey on down to Jake's for dinner and then hit the parks again.
F6B538CE-C276-4435-A672-B9B8FA320CDA.jpeg

I wanted the pizza -- I swore I loved the pizza from Jake's last time. Neither of us saw it on the menu at first. Davy decided on the fish and chips. I honestly can't think now what I ordered. Mine was OK. Davy's fish was AWFUL. I was shocked, as we always loved Jake's. We will go again next trip and get the pizza!

So, we were on a mission to hit all of the water rides. It was evening and a FREEZING 76 degrees (at least the locals must have thought so by the way they were dressed!). We were the ONLY ones going on the water rides. Popeye had been my favorite, but I must say something seemed to be lacking this trip. Davy didn't even want to do it. He did Dudley about a million times - once when I was on Popeye. We also did Jurassic Park a couple of times (we might have done that one first?). The first time we did not get really wet. The second, soaked. Then, COMPETELY SOAKED on Dudley. We then ran out of the park to get warm (ok, a little chilly at this point) and had an early night.

OMG -- we got back to the hotel and SILENCE. Complete silence. I know the hotel MUST have been full because of the time of the year, but we did not hear a soul! No toddlers playing hide and seek in the hall. No dad next door cussing out his son... just blissful silence! The other hotels are really nice but not being able to sleep well really hurt us.

We first cuddled together in front of the ipad and watched the season finale of The Mandalorian. We loved it. We were lucky enough to meet Giancarlo Esposito a couple of years ago (Davy loved him on Once Upon a Time, me on Breaking Bad) and he was a wonderful villain in the finale. Then,, a wonderful quiet sleep to get up early the next day for early entry and, sadly, our last day!

Day 6: New Year's Eve!

We got up early on NYE to get to early entry. Both parks were open. We had been checking Hagrid's off and on last couple of days and the wait time was never less than 240. Usually in the 300 or 400+ time. We THOUGHT about going to line up early during early entry, but figured we'd be back in May and we didn't want to spend our time in line. We got lucky with Rise of the Resistance but didn't have to wait during park time. So, we decided we wanted to head to US this morning and hit Diagon Alley and Gringott's. I hadn't done the full line in a LONG time. I figured seeing Domhnall Gleeson on two rides in two parks (ROTR and Gringotts) would be a treat. <3 Of course, we had already ridden, but single rider (and FP too maybe -- I can't remember) cuts out the big scene in the office.

So, we started walking the path from RPR to US. An older guy and another younger guy were slowly walking in front of us. Davy was going on and on and on about his D&D book. This is it -- I'm sharing because if I had to hear about it nonstop for several days, the least you can do is check out the cover. LOL.

Well, apparently the old guy in front of us had had ENOUGH. He stopped and told us to get on ahead of him. LOL. So, we did.

Davy was wearing the new Baby Yoda shirt I bought at HS a few days before. He got a quite a few, "cute shirt!" comments. He was loving it.

We got to the gates. We were about 10-20 folks back. Not too bad. Davy was so happy this morning. He gave me a hug for some reason -- basically because I'm the BEST MOM EVER I'm sure! Anyway, an employee came over and said, "is it just you two?" I said yes. He said, "come with me..." and led us to another line that was closed. He said, "stand here. You're now first in line." SWEET!!! Davy was THRILLED. We decided it was Baby Yoda magic!

When the gates opened, we hustled back to Diagon Alley. Had no wait at all to get on ride. YES! I do love this ride!

Then... Davy just wanted to hang out in Diagon Alley. Yes. It was SOOOO quiet! I had to get my first hot butterbeer of the day of course. And, then, we just took pics of an empty Diagon Alley. (And I may have grabbed a second hot butterbeer after I slammed down the first.....)

Davy then wanted to wait for the stage show. Sure! Last trip, he was kind of over these shows, so I was thrilled. I got another hot buttberbeer to celebrate and settle in. Davy loved reading Tales of Beedle the Bard when he was younger -- maybe even more than the main Harry Potter books. They did the Three Brothers story this morning. So amazing! Pics in next post!

Enjoying this report. :) You're getting so much done!

I shouldn't laugh about the Lyft driver's number plate, but wow, what a thing to choose. I love D&D too and yes it's very easy to just go on and on about it haha.

He is so grown up Alice!!!

Love seeing the pictures again......I’m gutted Jake‘s wasn’t as good for Davy this time....but sounds like overall your food was good, albeit a bit too spicy.......lol.......

Glad you enjoyed all those butter beers!!! And Davy not stopping for Puss in Boots.....tell him Aunty Carole would have made him stop......:duck:

Lovely pictures and makes me so keen to be back!!

I know nothing of D&D, never been a thing I’d be interested in.....but can imagine your pain.......but, you got some nice mummy dust too.......lovely!

Enjoying your pictures and definitely approve of I will survive as an appropriate song for RRR.......I never choose anything else......

Love his tee shirt too.......::yes::

We also watched Celestina Warbeck's Christmas show -- I thought I took pics but all I see are failed attempts at capturing pics of the snow. LOL. My bad. Davy was hoping to all see The Fountain of Fair Fortune, but for some reason, that was not playing today.

We then headed to RRR again. Rode it once and I was done. Davy wanted to do it again. I decided to shop. Got an awesome Universal monsters long sleeve shirt. It was getting a tad chilly, so I put it on I think it was actually in the 50s or 60s today -- so I wasn't a wuss like everyone else was the days before. LOL.

I also found this. I am a HUGE Psycho/Bates Motel fan. So, this had to be mine. Proudly hangs in my bathroom now:
B287B900-A099-4605-9F82-E99507C5A18D.jpeg

I think we then took Hogwarts Express over to IOA. We rode Forbidden Journey and then... I forgot my locker number. That's ok... just put my thumb print and it'll open... and, my thumb print didn't register. :( I was sure I as at the right bank of lockers... ARGH. They then didn't have the master key... so, it took quite a bit of time to get that and then they checked every locker. I told them what was in it so they'd know I wasn't just taking someone's stuff randomly. Finally found it! Whew. Soooo scary. From now on, taking a pic of my locker before going on a ride - but don't think phones are allowed on this one! Still, they were very nice trying to help me. I think I was about to panic.

Davy wanted to go to Hog's Head and just hang out. MORE HOT BUTTERBEERS! We grabbed a seat -- the table hadn't been cleaned off, but we didn't care at this point. We just hung out for quite a long time.
B814FD1F-F6C7-430A-8074-889559A5C58D.jpeg

Davy then decided it was time to ride the Hulk. I have told this story many times in reports, so sorry if you have read before... when Davy was three, we came to Universal. He saw the Hulk ride from his stroller, looked up, pointed, and said, "I want to ride THAT!" It was always a goal and a favorite. We got on today and felt really knocked around. He did too -- he's now taller than I am, so he felt a similar knocking about when he hadn't before. That was it for both of us.

You can get a pretty good look at the Baby Yoda shirt on. He was getting SO MANY compliments on it -- he said he never wanted to take it off!
BF2F6D48-B241-4A99-91DD-325F01EDB271.jpeg

Up next... lunch and our last few hours... and hot butterbeers...

I AM going to scold him again on your behalf for Puss in Boots!!!!

I will probably revert back to I Will Survive, but my kid got such a kick out of me listening to Rainbow Connection sung by Kermit the Frog -- it was worth it!

This is why we connected! I love you have the towel too!!! <3

We did so much really -- plus felt relaxed. I was so worried going this time of year, but was no bother whatsoever with the crowds. Especially with Express Pass. :)

We then headed back to Leaky Cauldron again. It's funny... last couple of trips, Davy would ONLY eat at Three Broomsticks (maybe got him to Leaky Cauldron once). We didn't eat at Three Broomsticks at all this trip. Anyway, split some fish and chips again. I had my 4th hot butterbeer of the day. For the second time, we sat right across from the caldron itself! 88CF299A-4422-4ADC-9316-BCCF55AC2934.jpeg

Anyone who is a big Star Wars fan will get why our order number is funny. Davy said even at Harry Potter land, he needs to protect The Child at all costs!

I think this ^^^ is about my favorite picture of the trip.

We must have then gone over to US again on Hogwarts Express. I do love that train ride!

We passed the mystic fountain -- Davy LOVED it as a youngster -- he is still interested but not as much. What was unique this trip -- it was a woman doing the voice. First time I've heard a woman! Yay! We listened a bit each time we walked by this trip.

I believe we rode Mummy. While Davy rode RRR again, I finally got to look in the Monster's Cafe. I somehow had never done that before!

After, I had Davy take this as our last pic in the parks (because I'm a sicko)...405A7BC7-D691-4398-8EE8-0933D3ED2481.jpeg

We sadly made our way back to RPR. Tony Hinds was going to pick us up. Had a lovely chat with him on the way to the airport... one other trip, I had left a bag in his car when he dropped us off at Shades of Green. This time, I get to the check-in counter and realize I have left my wallet in the backseat of his car. I quickly called and he raced back. Such a good guy -- but he may never let me ride again! LOL.

THEN, they did not have Davy on my flight with me!!!! I was about to panic, but they got him switched over (it was their mistake -- they had changed our flights once and changed them differently somehow!).

We then headed home... we were in the airport car service a couple of blocks from my house when midnight struck. The driver was so friendly -- we all counted down together and I gave Davy a big hug and kiss on top of his head (which is getting harder and harder to reach!).

We were home -- and looking forward to our May trip!!!!

Lovely trip report Alice......

Really enjoyed reading about your time there.....and some lovely pictures too......

I have no clue about #66!!! But, you knew that already.....lol.....

Have heard the lady Mystic Fountain a couple of times.......she‘s sharp as a tack!! And so glad you got Davy on your flight with you......:scared1:

Glad you had such a wonderful trip with your boy.......:wave2:

Final thoughts...

I have always been afraid to go to Orlando at Christmas. Knowing this would not be our only trip, having a game plan, low expectations, and getting up early here and there made it possible. Also — express pass and/or single rider. We did everything we wanted to except Hagrid’s. One of my favorite times was just hanging in an empty Diagon Alley walking around and taking pics.
And, hot butterbeer!!! My boyfriend found a recipe for me. I told him to throw it away. I was lucky in that we walked A LOT and I was careful what else I ate but if I could have this every night I would balloon! It was my favorite treat ever but will keep in there if we ever go again in the winter.

This was one of the best holidays ever. I have such a great travel partner in Davy. I am one lucky mom.
Next up is our May trip. We are spending 4 days at WDW and then five days at Universal. We can’t wait! Hagrid’s will be a priority this time!
I will miss getting to stay at Shades of Green but am so happy at my new job. With losing those military discounts! I loved the DoubleTree as well other than the thin walls. RPR is amazing as always. Glad we will be there longer in May!

Thanks everyone for reading! <3
