Debt Dumpers - 2019

A little sad today. I've saved up $200 in gift cards through Swagbucks. I didn't realize how stinking expensive DL tickets are, just for two days. :( I'll keep plugging away for some more dinero. Also, has anyone purchased through Last Minute Travel or Undercover Tourist with multiple gift cards?

check with your insurance company for any discounts that may be available-dd got one for grades (i think b average met the criteria) and another for taking the insurance company's free on-line 'new driver' class (maybe took 30 minutes to watch the videos and answer the multiple choice questions). every little bit helps.
Yeah, he will get a good grade one and also we have our homeowners and car insurance bundled. But with two teen drivers....high rates!!

$200 through swagbucks? I'm impressed! Sorry you're sad. Looks like you might be able to come up with more $ the way you're tearing through SB - mine is a very slow roll. I got $50 in 6 months, but I don't shop much. Mostly surveys.

I'm also impressed! Mine's even slower than yours, I'm sure! Right now I'm aiming for a simple $10 gift card! I don't have patience for their surveys, I'll try a few out sometimes and if it doesn't work that's it. I'm not playing around with buying their deals, like Sirius subscriptions, and then later cancelling them, nope not for me, too much of a hassle adding extra things to do. Mainly just use the shopping portal if I don't use the Southwest one if buying something online.

My swagbucks earning is very slow too. I use it at work for any searches I do, which helps, but I plod along mostly.

Sorry I was complaining. I am grateful to have that amount. Used a few receipt uploads to help my point totals. There's a SB thread on the budget board that helps tremendously.

But I am still sad about the DL prices. Going to keep plunking along to try and get more gift cards to put toward the first ticket.

Don't be sorry to complain. That is what we're all here for, right? The good, the bad, the ugly.

You're supposed to complain here!! Especially over prices - we're all here to pay down debt while we save for trips. Except Disney keeps sabotaging us with price increases every month. I feel like I have to look constantly to make sure my budget is still what I think it is, since prices on anything can go up - even drinks, snacks, souvenirs, etc. I look up prices on all kinds of things when I'm figuring out how much we'll spend. Not unusual for me to have to adjust up since we have to plan trips A YEAR OUT (thanks Disney!).

I was just amazed at your SB awards! It's because I have no patience on that site that I don't amass more than my occasional Amazon gift card, all me! And, anything to save money for an upcoming trip to DL is good.

We do that too! This one popped up unexpectedly. DH's work has a convention and his bosses are paying for the two hotel nights for us. I told DH that I'd scrimp and save to get a couple of days at the parks. The parkhoppers make more sense because it's only $110 more. But still...THAT'S SOME MASSIVE STICKER SHOCK for the tickets.

Which is why we usually plan 3 years out...

Well, I was all happy that I have pet insurance, but it's been three weeks since I filed the claim and they still haven't reviewed it. Now I'm worried that I'm going to get screwed over. Surgery was $4,600 and they are supposed to cover 90%. If they don't I'll be canceling my coverage immediately.

ETA: Just called them for the third time in as many weeks and they say they have a backlog of claims right now but should get to mine soon. Woman on the phone said mine shouldn't be an issue and should be processed quickly once it is assigned to one of their claim specialists. Fingers crossed!

Have you looked them up with the Better Business Bureau? This sounds fishy to me. Like they're going belly up. I hope I'm totally wrong on this and they come through like they say they will. Do they have a FB page?

Not sure if it was the BBB, but I've looked up reviews on different sites and many are from people who just didn't read their policies to understand what is and is not covered. Some say that they use any little note made in the past by a vet to say it was a pre-existing condition. Luckily my pup has been insured by them since she was a puppy, so they shouldn't be able to pull that one on me. They do have a fb page. This is a company that the vets actually recommend. Had the follow up appointment with the surgeon today and she said my dog is healing very well. She also said that this company is usually very good and if I have any issues to let her know and she will write them a letter since this surgery should be covered by them.

I hope you get your claim! Is there a website or customer service agent you can check on your claim status with?

if this is a company your vet advertises by having their brochures on the desk/signage you might want to let them know about the issues you're having. it reflects badly on the vet practice, and a call from a valued patient's owner could nudge them to call their rep at the company which may resolve things faster (they may also want to re-think what company they are promoting).

Yes, as I said, I talked to the vet/surgeon yesterday and she will write to them if there is any issue with them trying to weasel out of reimbursing me for the surgery. The woman on the phone said they had a backlog of claims lately and are currently working on ones that were filed a couple of days before mine. So if I don't hear anything by the end of next week I will call the surgeon. I leave for France on the 20th, so I won't be able to deal with it again until I get back. Sigh.

End of week update: Really started the house purge in earnest this week! DH had 12 days off for vaca. (stayed home) and tackled many house projects. Outdoor benches have been redone (although DH was overzealous with the spray paint and now the garage floor will need more scrubbing than he could finish before going back to work - on the next list!). Carpets are shampooed, which resulted in some other stuff getting deep cleaned before putting back (isn't that always the way?). Yard has been super deweeded, edged, insects sprayed for, and is looking tip top. House has been painted (yeah, we didn't sleep much). Annnd, took a huge load of unwanted goodies to the women's & children's shelter (called Safe Harbor here) that we had been working on since day 1 of vaca. That was a massive undertaking, and I feel like we have barely scratched the surface! DS 27 is special needs and has a problem letting anything go (his tshirt collection would rival any woman's closet - it fills his closet and the closet in the spare room that I call the fitness room since all my exercise equip. is there) and that is just one example. Bless him, I just have to find new ways to keep it corralled and organized. The rest of the house is fair game!! I don't care who owns it!! So, due to the extra cost of said projects, no progress has been made towards monetary goals in the past couple of weeks. But I feel like we made wise investments in getting some of this done. Happy weekend!

While it's good news that I'm graduating with my PhD in two weeks, we came to the sad conclusion that my student loans are going to absolutely cripple us. Of course, there's always the hope that I can now get a higher paying job, but since who knows if that will happen, we've decided to sell our (too small) condo and zero out our debt. While part of me feels like this is us taking a step back, going from owners to renters, we ran the numbers and it's the only way we can really start saving for ANYTHING else. Otherwise we're going to be working at like a -$1400 budget every month starting in six months. And it's entirely my fault for not realizing how QUICKLY interest accumulated on those loans while I was in school! It's absolutely horrifying.

But there are upsides: it will get rid of ALL of our debt. The car will be paid off and it will allow us to probably move into a new space paying less a month than we would all of our debt bills plus mortgage. Especially since one of our kids is starting "real school" this September. We'll still be paying nearly 3k in care fees every month until the youngest is out of daycare in two years, but at least there's light at the end of this tunnel and it's probably not a train.
