Hi all, okay we just have a wii... Which I now understand isn't a great thing... But moving on... We bought the game... A couple extra characters and a packet of blind discs...

Came home plugged it in... Dd and I played (taking turns) Monsters Inc with Sully... Dd explored the other stuff, then we put the girl from incredibles on, and played her game until the end (I think?? We were tired, defeated the bad guy at the top of the building and all his robots).

So here's my questions... What do all these discs do, how do I use them? Dd loves minecraft and toy box seems like fancy minecraft... Is that what it is? The characters... Does each movie have a "game"? This is what I am used to... A game... Not open ended building stuff...

So right now is there a monsters, incredibles, cars, pirates and Lone Ranger game? I know I have to use the clear cube thing to get into the starter set games... Do I use it for cars etc too?? Or is there another cube I need or is no cube needed? I saw frozen is on preorder... So will that be another game? And jack skellington?

I will try to answer from our xbox perspective since that's all we have.

The crystal cube is different worlds you can play in (Incredibles, Monsters and Pirates I think). There are different base worlds you will have to buy if you want to play other worlds like Lone Ranger and Cars are the ones out right now.

Toy Story world will be out sometime in October I think and I'm not sure if Frozen will come with its own world or if they are just additional characters to play in your toy box.

Now, the round discs.
They are to add abilities to the characters you're playing.
The Pieces of 8 adds more $ when you are getting $ in the game.
Fix it Felix heals you faster I think.
Bolt gives you more power again, I think.
And Chrome gives you better defense.

The hex discs:
They can only be used in the Toy Box mode.
There are discs that will change the landscape of your TB world (land and sky are separate).
There are discs that will give you modes of transportation (cindy's carriage, kahn, etc.)
And there are discs that gives you weapons (carl's cane, stitch's blaster).

There are rare orange discs as well.
Buzz's car
Abu as an elephant
Dumbo
Mike's car
All those are modes of transport

And the latest orange disc is the Tron one.
This one gives you additional sparks (xp points).

You can combine up to 3 hexes and 2 rounds I think.

Some combos of 2 rounds will give you additional power (at least in my xbox it does), but not all combos.

Have fun playing!

There's another thread that does trading of those discs if you end up wanting to have a complete set.

:)

CSECA if you're still out there...hope you won't mind answering another question...

DS is getting Disney infinity Start Pack for birthday from his Aunt along with a few packs of Discs and the play guide book..she lucked out on a great promotional day at Toys r Us Sunday. So with the starter he can play Monsters Inc., Incredibles & Pirates worlds - right?

Anyway, today DH and I went to Toys r Us and they had a special for Disney Infinity. We decided to get the Villain 3 pack from the dog for his birthday(DH and I already got DS his big birthday gift PLUS a long weekend in WDW for MNSSHP). So I am assuming this will give him extra characters to be in the 3 worlds listed above - right?

We also got the Lone Ranger set and the Mater figure. From what you said in pp, Lone Ranger set will give him Lone Ranger world, but what about Mater? Is he of any use without the Cars set? I thought by having Mater he will have Cars world, but I think I'm wrong on that. Does Santa also need to get him the Cars set with that crystal piece for this to work?

Thanks

Yes

Yes you can play the characters that belongs in its correct worlds. So Syndrome in incredibles, Davy Jones in pirates and randy in monsters. :)

Santa will need to be kind and get him the Cars set for Mater to be able to play :)
You can still use Mater in the toy box but you won't have any Cars world to play in until you get the set.

Thanks for the help... So it looks like we can play with all our characters in the toy box, but if we want to play the game with mater (which we bought) we need to get the cars play set... And it looks like I can preorder toy story and frozen to have those playsets, and those are roughly $30 each. The characters are just for playing in the toy box unless you have the playset (like dd used violet instead of mr incredible). Who has the best price typically for playsets? We bought all this at target, the game seems to be a set price everywhere, and we did the buy 2 get 1 free on the characters... But boy was the selection picked over!

So I have a $75 game, that basically came with 3 game worlds, plus the toy box (fancy mine craft) lands... Then for another $30ish I can get new game worlds and add to the toy box lands... Right? And the discs either give me special powers or toys. But only when I put the discs on the pad. If I switch them out I won't still have whatever power or toy I took off.

Phew... I see why it is called infinity, I will end up spending an infinity amount of money on this game! lol

One more question... Do the missions change at all in the game world if you have a different character? Like we went thru with violet, can we go back through with mr incredible and have different missions? Or would it be the same stuff (learn how to use a glider, a helicopter, escort the paddy wagon, beat the robots etc)

The missions are the same regardless of which character plays the game. Specifically In the incredibles world are some training that each character has to go through to get their power... So that one is character specific.

Regarding pricing I saw on TRU online there's a $20 off $85 purchase of infinity stuffs. Not sure if what you're missing will add up to that much.
This past saturday was the big infinity weekend at TRU where you can get 40% off playsets with their coupon. Not sure when the next one is going to be .

Oh and regarding the power discs and figures, this is just series 1. Series 2 and 3 are coming up.
So yeah... Infinity $ is right lol!

Oh and 1 more thing, in consoles where you can use 2 players (I heard you can't do that in wii? I'm not sure... I might just be hearing things), you can use 2 circle discs on each player. That means you can use a total of 4. Sooooo... if you want to, you really have to have 4 sets of circle discs...

Whew...sounds like endless possibilities and lots of gift possibilities! My strategy is by getting gems for birthday I can see if DS really enjoys it - if so , then I have lots of gift ideas for relatives and friends for Christmas! Plus I really can't wait to try it out myself...but now I'll probably have to buy an 2nd controller for our Xbox360 as we already have Wii and bought Xbox mostly for Kinnect so only have the 1 controller it came with and it sounds like 2 player can be fun sooo...

Oh by the way, when I went to Toys R Us yesterday they have special..buy $85 of Infinity characters get $20 off. Toys R Us (in store) is more expensive for some items then other places, but they will price match with Traget, Walmart and Toys R Us online...but they can only price match or offer the $20 discount - for us it was a better deal to pay Toys r us prices and take $20 off then do price match so check both...

PLUS..one of the workers at Toys R Us who has all Infinity things and really likes it THINKS that the Lone Ranger set may not be out or available for as long as we think ... he says like DVDs Disney plans to retire or put characters in the "vault" after awhile and he's noticing they are not getting as many Lone Rangers as the other characters and he says he really likes the Lone Range world...

I can't wait for Wreck it Ralph...he says it's coming out early Dec - Dec 10, I think.

Plus, if you're buying the power discs he gave me 2 hints...first try feeling the packages before you buy and if you feel a disc with a scratchy surface it's most likely one of the rare special ones. Also he said before you open your disc pack you can place it on your disc holder thing and it will tell you which discs are in the package so if you get duplicates or ones you don't want you find out before you open the package and can exchange it or return it - just keep your receipt!

Yep, had to do the same thing... :lmao:

Interesting... I have been having a hard time finding LR set.

Yeah, I've done this before after buying piles of packs and not finding what we need.

You guys are awesome... It is all making more sense now! This is not a good game for beginner game players!! Lol

Yeah, the wii seems to only allow one person to play the mission part at a time, which is fine, we share (a little lol)... But we can team up in toy box, which I don't see the point of yet, but I am not 9 lol... I like games with direction. We also play animal crossing, but now we have started over because we had everything, so it's back to finding all the fish, bugs etc... A goal! Lol

I've been researching a bit as well because DS was also showing interest in WiiU.

From what various people at GameStop, Toys R Us etc. said - Wii is the least desirable platform - no multi play and graphics aren't as good. Xbox360 and WiiU have similaer graphic qualities, however the consensus is the XBOX controller is easier and better for Infinity game than the WiiU controller - they say WiiU is too cumbersome...

So I'm now thinking we can avoid getting a WiiU (only reason DS wants it is for the Mario Bros. WiiU game). He'll get Disney Infinity for XBOX 360 and will get into playing that and forget or realize he doesn't want a $300 gaming system just to play a Mario Bros. game when he still has his Wii System with lots of Mario games and XBOX 360 with Infinity plus the Disney Kinnect game...and then instead of wanting WiiU for Christmas he'll want Disney Infinity characters and discs and accessories and mom and dad will be running bowlegged to every store selling Disney Infinity to get the last package of the character he wants because it's such a hot game!!!

I'm going come in and offer a different opinion, if you're interested in hearing it.

Yes you're correct in that the Wii is the least desirable platform. It's the weakest hardware currently sold on the market, and because of it's limitations, the graphics are weakest of all the platforms that Disney Infinity is sold on, there is no 2-player option in any of the playsets (though there is in Toy Box mode), and there is also no online compatibility. (For either downloading Toy Boxes or playing with up to three others in Toy Box mode.)

However, the Gamestop crew is incorrect on two points. For one, the Xbox 360 and Wii U are incomparable in regards to graphics capabilities. The Xbox 360 is hardware that was released in 2005, while the Wii U is hardware that was released in 2012. There's a 8-year gap of enhancements and performance increases between the two. The Wii U is Nintendo's follow-up to the Wii, just as the "Xbox One" will be Microsoft's follow-up to the Xbox 360, released later this year.

However, since Disney Infinity is designed as a game that's meant to be identical across all platforms, it will look the same on the Wii U as it does on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The graphical difference becomes more apparent in games that are designed specifically for the Wii U hardware.

Secondly, he's incorrect in saying that the Wii U Gamepad is cumbersome for Disney Infinity. In fact, it's the complete opposite.

Now, I'm not sure how much you know about the Wii U, so I'll cover the basics. The big thing that's setting the Wii U apart from its competition is the Wii U Gamepad, which is a 7-inch touch screen that's surrounded by buttons, offering the best of the worlds of tablets and controllers in one package.

wii_u_gamepad_black-580x358.jpg

Every game takes advantage of the screen on the gamepad differently. Some games will show a map of your surroundings on the gamepad screen, some games show your character's inventory, and some games show different camera perspectives on the gamepad screen, and more. It's up to the developer of the game to utilize this second screen as they see fit, and there's been some great usage of it in the 10 months that the Wii U has been on the market.

Disney Infinity utilizes the gamepad in four ways:

1) During playset gameplay, you're able to view missions that are available directly on the gamepad screen without having to go into a separate menu, meaning that the gameplay is never interrupted.

2) During playset and Toy Box gameplay, gadgets and weapons can be selected through a menu on the gamepad screen, again allowing you easy access to everything you have on hand without a cumbersome menu you have to scroll through on the TV.

3) During Toy Box building mode, you're able to view all the objects you have available to use in build mode directly on the screen, and you can tap what you want to pull into the game, instead of having to go through the menu.

4) During the entire game, you can switch the gameplay from the TV. This is a pretty neat feature that quite a few Wii U games offer. If the Wii U is connected to a "main" TV in the house, if someone else wants to watch television or otherwise use the TV, with a tap of a button the game can be played entirely on the Gamepad screen as if you were playing it on the TV. I do this myself sometime just so I can play in bed.

Here's a nice video showing off the features that the gamepad offers.

The Wii U itself is compatible with all his old Wii software and controllers, so you'll be able to replace the Wii with the Wii U and carry over everything he already owns without a problem.

I'm not here to try to convince you into spending $300 on an entirely new console at Christmas, but I've run into my fair share of Gamestop employees that can be bias against some companies while being overly supportive of others. I bought a Wii U on the day it was released, just as I did with the Xbox 360 eight years ago. They're both great consoles, but the Wii U has some great features that really set it apart from the competition.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have about it.

As a bonus, here's an interview with a Disney Infinity producer about the advantages of the Wii U version.

And I found a second one. Woot.

Thanks for all the info mjallemand...it does get overwhelming with all the different systems.

My first issue with Disney Infinity is DS wants it for his birthday in Sept. and Christmas is not until Dec.! First I was thinking that he would have to wait Christmas tog et both...but then, I was getting antsy to play Infinity and realized he can have just a much fun with it on XBOX and he got XBOX360 last Christmas doesn't use it as much lately because he really got into Mario Bros. (he's going to be 7) I thought getting Disney Infinity for XBOX for his birthday will solve the waiting issue and also if I want to play Infinity and he wants to play Mario - we can! And it seems like I'm not sacrificing on gaming experience if he plays Infinity on XBOX or WiiU.

And I'm not totally sure that we won't get WiiU for xmas..First of all it's obvious that Wii is being phased out for WiiU so if you enjoy playing Wii and you don't get WiiU eventually there will be very few or no new games for you. I like the idea you can take the WiiU remote anywhere in the house to play. And though he says he wants it, I have no idea how much my son will like Disney Infinity. He may want more play sets and such for Christmas, he may still want the WiiU and Mario Bros. WiiU! I guess only time will tell..

AND another dilemma..I have a 15% off any one item coupon for GameStop that's good until Oct. 31. 15% off $300 is not bad if we get WiiU...and since they just dropped the price $50, I'm not sure how many "great deals" or specials will be available during holiday shopping season for WiiU.

So your added info is much appreciated...with the different game exclusives for the different platforms it's hard to just stick to one..I know we will not upgrade our XBOX to the new one because we've only had it a year and don't yet play it that much to justify the upgrade. However, we play Wii often and have had the system longer so who knows??

Yeah, the Wii will eventually be phased out in favor of the Wii U. The Wii was a massive success, and that's why it's still being sold in stores, but the new releases have been reduced to a trickle. (Mostly movie tie-in games and what have you...) It's just the natural cycle of how videogame consoles work. They're generally on the market for 5 to 7 years before a new one is released

The Wii was released in 2006, and it's successor in 2012, just how the Xbox 360 is being replaced this year by the Xbox One, its successor. However, like the Wii, the Xbox 360 will be available in stores for another year or two before development moves over to the Xbox One.

However, as I mentioned, the nice thing about the Wii is that's it's compatible with all the Wii software and accessories. Your existing software library, Wii remotes, nunchucks, and other gadgets will all carry over to the Wii U with no problem. (That's something that the new Xbox hardware can't manage, and I think it's a big selling point in Nintendo's favor.) They'll even look a little bit nicer because of the Wii U's HDMI connection. There's a simple transfer process that moves all the game saves and any purchased content over from one system to another wirelessly, and then you can either sell or give away the Wii, or move it to another room of the house and make it a Netflix/Hulu player like I did.

One caveat I'll mention in regards to the off-screen play: He won't necessarily be able to take the Gamepad anywhere in the house. It has to be within a certain range of the system to maintain the connection, and it differs depending on electronic interference and the material your home is built with. He'll definitely be able to sit on the couch in the same room and play it, and if his bedroom is one room over or on a second floor he may be able to play it, but there's a limitation to how far you can go.

The price on the Wii U drops to $300 on September 20th. It comes bundled with a game called Nintendoland, which is a similar to Kinect Disneyland in that it's a batch of 12 different minigames based on Nintendo characters, and they all use the Wii U Gamepad in unique and interesting ways.

It's good to know your son's age, because a nice thing about Nintendo's software output is that it's generally an all-ages affair, while the Xbox 360 tends to lean towards the mature side of things. Heck, I've 27 years old, and I'd rather play a Mario game any day over the shoot-em-up games that are saturating the market.

Okay, so now you all are making me think we need a WiiU! If I do something crazy like get one... Everything will really work on it? Animal crossing? Infinity? I don't need to go buy my games again right?

This is the way it works: The Wii U has a main menu that appears when you boot it up.

See that icon in the center that says "Wii"? When you tap that, the system switches over to Wii mode, and you'll get dropped directly into the old Wii menu:

At the point the system is a Wii. Any Wii games you put into the drive operate exactly how they did on the old Wii hardware. Your Wii Remotes, Nunchucks, Classic Controllers, and any other controllers you have operate exactly how they did before.

There's two caveats to this: For one, the Wii U doesn't have the Gamecube controller ports that the original Wii hardware did. So if you have any Gamecube controllers or any other controllers that connected to those ports, they won't work, because there's no place to plug them in.

Secondly, the Wii U's gamepad doesn't work with any Wii software. This seems like a "no duh" for a lot folks, but some don't understand it, so I feel the need to mention it. That fancy controller with the screen in it doesn't work with Wii software, so don't suddenly think you'll be able to play your Wii games on it, because it won't work.

Otherwise, yes, all your Wii games and acessories work right out of the box with no issues.

Nintendo has a section on their site with the details if you're interested.

From here on out, you'll just be buying Wii U software. The boxes are blue instead of white.

What's even nicer is that not only will your Wii controllers work in "Wii mode", but they also work in Wii U games. For example, when a second player jumps in with Disney Infinity, they'll use the Wii Remote & Nunchuk for controls, while the first player uses the Wii U gamepad.

I just remembered I posted this picture on my Facebook wall back when the game launched. This is how it looks in "Off-TV Play" mode.

Picture quality is better in person obviously...we're talking cell phone camera + reflections here.
