Disney Magazine Replacement

I know a lot of people here were disappointed when the Disney Magazine closed up shop earlier this year, so I wanted to share some info. I recently bought a couple of issues of Laughing Place magazine, and am pretty darn impressed.

The writing is a tad amateurish, but the photos and layout are very, very impressive. I wish I could scan a couple of pages and post them to illustrate. Issue #3 is just out and runs about 46 pages on very heavy stock paper. It features very extensive coverage of the May 5th events around WDW including the kickoff celebrations for DL's 50th and articles on each of the new attractions at WDW. One of my favorites is an article entitled "Expectation Everest."

They appear to be getting support from the Disney community. The issue features interviews and photos of people like Imagineer Joe Rohde and artist Andreas Deja (Lilo and Stitch.)

Some may prefer the immediacy of the Internet, questioning the value of a magazine covering events that occurred over 3 months ago. But I can't think of a single article (or series of articles) I've read on the Internet that covers these 5/5/05 events in as impressive a manner.

They offer 4-issue subscriptions to the mag, and you can also pick up all of the back-issues at cover price. I figured I'd try the old issues first, but I will definitely be subscribing now.

It's a bit pricey at $8.50 per issue. But to those of you who said "I'd pay 2-3x as much to keep the Disney Magazine in business", here's your chance to put your money where your mouth is. ;)

I have a subscription to this magazine. I enjoy it. But I did enjoy the Disney magazine more. But it is nice, love the pictures, and the stories are good. I should be getting the 3rd issue in the mail soon. :)

$34 for four issues - that's a lot of money .. I have a lot of magazine subscritions, & the magazine would have to be very special before I shell out that amount of money.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. That's why I just bought the current issue and back issues before making a decision.

If you want to give it a look, try issue #3 which has a lot of WDW info.

In fact, you can get another opinion via this article just posted today at Jim Hill Media:

Does there seem to be equal coverage of WDW and DL?

I got Issues 1 and 3. #1 seemed to concentrate heavily on DL. But issue #3 was almost exclusively WDW. My guess is that they are striving for a good mix of all things Disney, including the cruise line and parks overseas, with the heaviest coverage being WDW and DL.

Issue #3 had articles on the 5/5/05 ceremonies at both WDW and DL, the Soarin and LMA parties at Epcot and MGM around 5/5/05, a look at the evolution of the Land Pavilion, a preview of Expedition Everest, Lucky the Dinosaur, LMA, and I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting. I also recall an interview with one of the Lilo and Stitch animators, some cruise line info, and a look at an Aladdin stage show (not sure what park that was at.)

Issue #4 (due out in about 3 mos) is supposed to feature Hong Kong Disneyland.

Well, I am in for $51. Purchased back issues and a subscription. I always said I wish I started collecting Disney Magazine from the beginning so I could have a complete collection. Here is my second chance.

Thanks for the heads up.
