Disney Media Networks's Anne Sweeney Named One of FORTUNE's 50 Most Powerful Women

October 17 2006: 10:36 AM EDT

(Fortune) -- Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair of Disney Media Networks, ranks No. 13 on Fortune's 2006 list of 50 Most Powerful Women.

Sweeney is leading one of the big trends in media: television shows migrating to other devices, such as computers and iPods. Last fall she brokered a deal with Apple to make ABC the first network to offer digital downloads on iTunes. In May, Disney blazed another trail with free video streaming of primetime shows on ABC's website.

By the key criteria Fortune uses in assembling its annual list - the size, importance, and health of each business in the global economy, and the momentum of each woman's career (along with her social and cultural influence) - there's no question that the power of women in the corporate sphere is rising.

Indeed, it could be called the year of the Most Powerful Woman CEO. The top seven positions on Fortune's 2006 Most Powerful Women list are held by CEOs.

Some other pwerful women on the list include: Sallie Krawcheck, Citigroup; Judy McGrath, Viacom; Susan Arnold, Procter & Gamble; Charlene Begley, General Electric; Mary Minnick, Coca-Cola; Linda Dillman, Wal-Mart.

I'm proud to say Ms. Sweeney is a graduate of my alma mater, John A. Coleman High School in Hurley, N.Y. :cheer2:
