General Information about Browsers and Cookies

What is a "web browser"?

The software you are currently using to view this web page is a "world-wide-web browser." The web browser was developed to allow users to access information from the world-wide-web, using his or her personal computer. Initially, web browsers were very simple, allowing users to view the text and graphic content of web sites. Today, web browsers have become much more sophisticated, giving users the ability to access audio and video content. The companies who develop web browser software, primarily Netscape, Inc. and Microsoft Corporation, periodically upgrade their products. To keep current you should obtain upgrades of your web browser software at least once per year

What are "cookies"?

Cookies are computer codes that help web sites identify users. Cookies are set on your web browser automatically by most websites. Whether you use Internet Explorer or Netscape, your cookies are saved to a simple text file that you can delete as you please. Sometimes cookies are set on your computer incorrectly, making it necessary to remove or clear the cookies from your system.

What are "History" files?

"History" files, are web pages that your browser automatically saves to your computer for temporary use. Sometimes these files are incomplete or incorrect. Occasionally it is necessary to remove or "clear" these "corrupted" files from your computer system. Use the instructions below to "Clear History" on your web browser.

I am unable to login or keep getting a "Your session has expired. Please Log in again." error whenever I try to read a message.

The permission error that you are getting is not related to your account. It strictly deals with the way the computer you are using handles cookies. If the computer you are using has cookies disabled (turned off), then you will not be able to use the site.
The easiest way to fix this problem is to clear your cache and delete the cookie file(s) on your computer. Finally, if your browser doesn't support cookies, you have them turned off or you refuse the cookie, you will also get that error message.

Here are some things that may be causing your machine to not retaining cookies, login or registration information:

1. You have cookies disabled or turned off.
2. You are manually deleting your cookie files.
3. You are cleaning out your "temporary Internet files" which is deleting your cookies.
4. You are visiting from a different machine than the one you registered on.
5. Your machine may be behind a firewall or proxy server that prevents cookie transmission. This is most likely in a corporate environment. So, regardless of how your browser is set, cookies won't be sent or received by your browser. Since the cookies aren't making it through to your browser, the Web Site will assume you personally aren't accepting them
6. You are running a program (software) which automatically deletes cookie files (guarddog, anti-virus programs, etc.).
7. You are running a program (software) that interferes with cookie usage. There are many filtering and blocking software programs that also filter cookies. If you are running software like this, then your computer may not receive or send cookies.
8. Your Internet Security level is set to HIGH.

NOTE: If you use the Internet in a network environment, please contact your Help Desk, Network Administrator, or IT department. They should be able to clear cache and cookies from your company's servers and/or firewalls to remedy this problem.

Users of AOL browsers:

AOL service is fine. However, there have been changes made in their browser software that may make it nearly impossible for you to login and or stay logged in to sites that require user name and password. The reason you are having difficulty with login and staying logged in is that the AOL browser software sends different ID numbers (proxy server numbers) when a web site requests it's ID number (cookie information) to validate that you are logged in and approved to view the next page you are trying to see.

If you use AOL and are experiencing any problems we recommend you:

1. Log onto the internet as usual.
2. Minimize your AOL browser.
3. Click on the Internet Explorer icon and use Microsoft's browser to continue with your online browsing.

Cookie Deleting Instructions

In order to do this properly, remember to close (exit) your browser first. This is because all your cookies are held in memory until you close your browser. So, if you delete the file with your browser open, it will make a new file when you close it, and your cookies will be back.

Note: While you can safely delete the entire contents of Temporary Internet Files, deleting your cookie file entirely will cause you to "start from scratch" with every web site you usually visit. With your cookies gone, the next time you visit any site requiring password entry or which normally stores information about you, you'll have to re-enter your password. If this is a concern for you, please follow the directions for manually deleting selected cookies below.

To clear your cookies on AOL:

1. Restart/Start "AOL"

2. Click on the "My AOL" button

3. Select "Preferences"

4. Select the "WWW" icon

5. From "Temporary Internet Files" in "WWW" window select "Delete Files", then click "OK"

7. From "Temporary Internet Files", select "Clear History", then click "YES".

8. Close AOL windows and Restart "AOL"

To clear out cache and cookies with Internet Explorer:

1. Click on TOOLS (In Internet Explorer 4.x click on VIEW)

2. Choose INTERNET OPTIONS

3. Under the “General” Tab look for “Temporary Internet Files”.

4. Click on "Delete Files"

5. Click on SETTINGS in the General Tab

6. Click on VIEW FILES

7. The Temporary Internet Files Folder will open -> click on EDIT and choose SELECT ALL

(Please note: If you prefer to NOT delete all “cookies” follow the directions below for manually deleting selected cookies.)

7. Once all selected “cookies” are highlighted, click on FILE and choose DELETE

8. Close the Temporary Internet Files window

9. Click on OK to exit the Internet Options

To manually delete only selected cookies only in IE 6.0 go to:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet Files -> Settings -> View Files

Then search for the individual cookies for the DIS forums:

disboards
wdwinfo
198.64.133.85
198.65.131.237

...and any derivatives of the above. Then highlight the individual cookies and delete each one found. After this, close all browser windows and restart IE.
