1-What is the pool situation like at the end of Feb?
2-Any good deals towards the end of Feb?
3-Should we book now and risk finding a better deal later?
4-What's the deal with airport check-in?
5-Is there an airport shuttle?

Tell me how much I'm going to love this hotel (mainly because we can't afford to stay anywhere else with a nice pool!)

I would say the amount of people in vegas dies down in the middle of Jan. and for the most part of Feb (Hotel pools are the busiest during the summer). also, so the pool shouldnt be to much of a hassle. The biggest thing when coming to vegas is actually what is going to be here the same time as you. Events like Conventions and other things like that could mean every hotel will be booked. I would say search around and make sure you dont see anything major planed for the days that you will be here and go from there. If there isnt something big planed than you should be pretty fine getting a room. I cant comment on the air port since ive only been there recently to pick friends up, but yes they do have shuttles that goto the hotel's. After you book the room at whichever hotel call up there customer service number and ask about the airport shuttles times, many even ask for flight numbers to ensure that your flight isnt delayed and they will wait for you. for the rooms i couldnt say much either i have only stayed one night with a friend in the Flamingo. Good Luck! If you need any more info just ask away! :)

You will have a great trip! :thumbsup2 Here's my 2 cents!

1-What is the pool situation like at the end of Feb?

CALL the Flamingo and ask if it's open in Feb, many pools close for a few months in the winter for maintenance. If you are hanging your hat there to use the pool, find out from them if it will be open during your dates).
FWIW, it gets downright chilly in Vegas in the winter with snow in the higher elevations of the mountains nearby (not Calgary cold, but hardly sunning/swimming weather). It can be very rainy. I got lucky in early March of 05. It poured and flooded most of Feb, but was sunny and got up to 80 when I was there (first week of March). The pool at the Mirage was open and we had a great time.

2-Any good deals towards the end of Feb?

Yes, if you go after President's Day or before Nascar and March Madness you can find a good deal. If you cna be flexiable, that will work in your favor as far as room rates go. Sign up at the hotels websites (all that strike your fancy) for e-mail promos. Look at the LV convention calendar to see if any major events are happening--they can affect room rates at participating hotels. For example, the Flaming may be $150 per night (waaay too much for the Flamingo), but TI may be $79 (a much better property).

3-Should we book now and risk finding a better deal later?

Depends on how flexiable you are with your dates. If you only have 5 specific dates you can be gone then risking not being able to afford to go isn't worth it (to me, of course). Are you booking air and hotel seperate? If so and your dates are locked, buy your air now if it's a fair price and roll the dice with the room rate (but check the dates against events in Vegas). Don't pay too much to stay at the Flamingo...compare it to Monte Carlo (also has a great pool, with better food, better rooms and a better casino. And a monorail to Bellagio to get you mid strip for free).

4-What's the deal with airport check-in?

Some hotel groups offer a desk where you can check in and have keys issued. I HIGHLY reccommend this for the Flamingo as the lobby check in can be nightmarish (we had an hour wait!).

5-Is there an airport shuttle?

Not a Flamingo run shuttle, but there are companies that offer shuttle service to/from airport/hotels. How many of you are traveling? If it's more than one, take a taxi. From the airport to the Flamingo it might be $15 with tip--simply ask the cabbie for a ballpark before you get in. It's kind of a drag having to make stops on the shuttle only to have a few bucks. On the up side, you get to see a little more than a cab will show you. Cabs go directly there, shuttles most likely will take you to other hotels first.

6-Any rooms better than the others?

I can't help you with this one too much. There is a concierege level, but I have heard the rooms (not suites) are identical, and very generic in my experience.

Tell me how much I'm going to love this hotel (mainly because we can't afford to stay anywhere else with a nice pool!)

I'll give you my honest opinion of the Flamingo. We stayed there only once, and while not a miserable place, it really could be any big resort in any big city. Rooms are tidy, but rather plain. The service is bad (from waiters to front desk to security to dealers--people have worked here a long time and are sort of 'stuck in a rut'), the food is mediocre. The pool and grounds are really very pretty, but I was there in summer and it was so packed with hot sweaty people I couldn't bring myself to even look for a lounge. The location is fantastic.

Veags is about the experience, and I compare what I could get for my money at the Flamingo with comprable priced hotels. Flamingo attracts a lot of retiree snowbirds. If you are that demographic, then you'd be quite comfortable. It's not nearly as flashy or themed or pretty as almost every other big property on the strip.

If you have a super low rate ($50 night) and everything else is twice that, or all you have is $50 then it's great. A clean place to sleep, a great location and a nice pool should the weather cooperate. But compare your rate to the rates of the others hotels on the strip. Look at rates on Lasvegas.com and vegas.com They will give you a good idea of what the hotels have to ofer as far as rates.

FWIW, I did a quick search for Feb 22, 4 nights, 2 people and got an average rate of $135.59 at Flamingo and $149.56 at Monte Carlo. I'd jump on the Monte Carlo rate for the few dollars more.

Thanks for the info guys!

We're kind of limited on which days we can go. We have to go the week the boyfriend is off from school. Feb 20-25

We've booked our flights with Airmiles (now, that's a whole other thread!)

We've been to Vegas once, in Feb ironically. We were walking down the strip and all these news cameras were set up and there was major commotion and we were very confused. We walked up to one of the news guys and asked what was going on. They were filiming the rain for the news!

The last hotel we stayed at wasn't on the strip, we're looking for a step up but dont' wanna get too carried away. :rotfl: Honestly, we will probably wander as far as casinos and food go so that stuff isn't as important in a hotel to us. We just want a pool (we're canadian, if there's no snow on the ground it's swimming weather!) and I loved the penguins and stuff at the Flamingo last time we were there (hence our choice.) We're value resort people so really, i'm sure i'd like any hotel that wasn't $400/night!

Thanks again for the info! Now i just have to convince my boyfriend of the merits of airport check-in and taxi vs shuttle.

The last time we were in Vegas, we needed to take a cab to Treasure Island. Everybody who needs a cab goes to the same cab stand and stands in line for one. There was a HUGE line for cabs but it's very organized and the wait wasn't too bad (think fast loading ride at Magic Kingomd. LOL)

They say that if you take a cab from the airport, make sure the cabbie doesn't take you for the grand tour to rake in the money. Apparently, if they take the tunnel to get you to the strip, your cabbie is trying to make a fast buck on you. That being said, our cabbie took the highway to Treasure Island we got stuck in rush hour traffic. :confused3

So...who knows. (Gee, I'm a wealth of info, eh?)

While you're in Vegas, stop in at Ellis Island (Koval and Flamingo...next to the 7-11...behind Ballys parking lot). Best steak dinner deal ($4.95) in the city but you gotta ask for it. ;)

1-What is the pool situation like at the end of Feb?

February is typically a cold month in Las Vegas. Call the Hotel to see when they close down their pools.

2-Any good deals towards the end of Feb?

Typically, Las Vegas offers excellent room rates for people visiting Sunday through Wednesdays which is typically their slow days. Weekends or days preceding holdiays can get pricey.

3-Should we book now and risk finding a better deal later?

Generally, I would book a room 2-3 months in advance. Make sure you ask the reservation agent if there are any discounts for booking early.

4-What's the deal with airport check-in?

Some hotels offers check in at the airport. All you would have to do is go to their check in stand (similar to a car rental agency) and they will hand you your room keys. Your shuttle driver will pick you and your baggage up and they will deliver your baggage right to your room!

5-Is there an airport shuttle?

Yes, there is a shuttle constantly running from the hotels to the Strip. Check the hotel for their shuttle service hours.

6-Any rooms better than the others?

Since I am a non-smoker, I have to have a smokeless room. I loved Flamingo's rooms. Very clean and comfortable. The casino is much more cleaner than most casinos on the Strip.

Actually almost all of the Las Vegas hotels DO NOT have their own shuttles to/from the airport. Bell Trans is the most popular shuttle service, about $5 per person. Just exit the baggage claim area and there are always a number of vans heading to different areas of the strip, the wait should never be more than 10 minutes or so before the vans depart.

A cab to the Flamingo is between $15-$20 depending on traffic. Tell the driver to take Paradise to the Flamingo (otherwise he may take a longer route to charge you more).

The Flamingo is an older hotel. But it has an excellent location across from Caesars and Bellagio.
