Hawaii Closure Update

The Governor and Mayor of Honolulu have both declared that the stay at home order will continue until the end of May.

How this affects tourism: Right now, anyone coming into Hawaii, even inter-island travel, is being quarantined for 14 days. The means going anywhere, even to get groceries or to the pool/beach, is not allowed. A few tourists have attempted to violate the quarantine and have been sent home to their state/country - hotels are now reporting their own guests to authorities. All vacation rental homes are illegal at this time. The government has finally started cracking down on this loophole to tourism and these homeowners are being shut down and would be tourists are being sent home.

Even when Hawaii opens up, the 14 day travel quarantine will still be in effect for the foreseeable future. The government is currently looking into everything from putting all tourists into a few hotels which they'd have to pay for, to ankle bracelet monitoring. In any event, Hawaii will not be getting back to business as usual for a LONG time.

Not a surprise but confirms that our trip is canceled. So bummed. But this is our reality now.

Aulani is taking reservations beginning June 1st. Do you think the 14 day quarantine will be lifted by then?

I can't see it happening. Seems to me the state of Hawaii is being extremely cautious, and will not be opening up their borders unless they can have assurances that no one from outside coming in carries the virus. The only way that is going to happen is if there is a cure, the US has no more cases, or we begin massively testing everyone to identify who has it. Doubt any of those options are going to happen by June 1st. Expanded testing at least has a real shot of happening before the summer ends though.

Even if Hawaii businesses open on June 1, there is almost no chance the 14 day quarantine for travellers will be lifted at that time. If that's the case, you'd have to fill out health forms at the airport, have the DOH confirm your reservation, and then stay in your hotel room for 14 days.
