We always stay at the Atheneum which is 1 mile away but has a free shuttle.

There's not a lot really close to the arena yet, since the associated development projects are scheduled to lag behind the arena opening. Your best bet is something downtown, IMO, near Woodward for an easy walk, public transit, or Uber.

The Westin Book Cadillac is our go-to when we're in Detroit for an event. The rooms are large and comfortable, they have an indoor pool, and the steakhouse in the lobby is really good. It is just a bit under a mile from LCA, straight up Woodward for most of the way so the whole walk is on busy, well-traveled, well-lit streets. I haven't stayed there since the Q-Line rail opened, but that also runs right up Woodward so if you didn't feel like walking the whole way you could take the train.

The hotel in the Whitney Building would be a bit closer still, right on Woodward to make catching the Q Line even easier, and it looks fabulous but is a bit pricier so we haven't stayed there yet. I think that one is Aloft brand?

Thanks!

The Aloft would be perfect but much too pricey for me.

Good to know that Woodward is well lit and busy. I was looking at the Holiday Inn Express which is just a little bit past the Westin Book Cadillac on Washington Blvd.
It looks like I'd be walking straight down Wash Blvd from the Aloft, less than 0.5 mile. Do you know if that area is also well lit?

The Holiday Inn is practically across the street from the Book Cadillac. You'll be just fine in that area. All of downtown is pretty nice and pedestrian-friendly, and especially on a game/event night there will be people walking everywhere. Washington is a wide boulevard with a landscaped median that has artwork and lighting in the trees. We used to park on the street there for Tiger games and just take the ticket for overstaying the 2 hour limit until the city jacked up the price of parking fines (used to be $10 - cheaper than paying for most lots! - but now it is $45).

Or if you'd rather, you could go up Michigan to Woodward to Campus Martius and the restaurants there. That's also a well-traveled path that would take you past the side-by-side coney joints that have been featured on several Travel Channel and Food Network shows about Detroit, and give you the option of taking the train out to the stadium itself. You'd also have a better selection of restaurants going that way if you're planning to have dinner out before your event.

Have you checked Hotels.com? I always start there when I'm looking for a hotel in an area that I'm not familiar with. You can search for hotels near the arena and it will show you a list, including the distance. I use this as a starting point and then go to each hotel's website to do further research. You can also go to google maps and look at the street view to see what the walk between each hotel and the arena looks like (i.e. how many streets you need to cross, what types of restaurants or other businesses are on the way, etc.).

I've stayed at that Holiday Inn Express. It's nice.

Remember what I told you, the Atheneum has on demand shuttle that will take you door to door and pick you up on demand. We've used them many times.

The MGM Grand is probably in walking distance of the new stadium, but....it's not an area I'd probably walk in at night. And I say that as someone who used to work, literally, right in between the new stadium and MGM. Find a place with a shuttle or deal with a cab/Uber/Lyft/whatever.

That might be walking distance in theory but isn't a a pedestrian friendly area like the Woodward corridor or Greektown area. The expressways and on/off ramps all over the place create a sort of cul-de-sac of heavy car traffic, sidewalks that stop and start, and none of the sort of dense shops-and-restaurants development that make an area walkable. Plus most of the casino's "neighbors" are closed-campus office complexes with tons of parking, all of which clears out pretty quickly at the end of the work day. I used to spend most of my weekends at a club next to DTE's complex there and I agree - it isn't an area I'd want to walk in at night, just because of the lack of pedestrian flow.

Was down there last night twice, around 4pm and again at 8:30pm. There was a game at Comerica and LCA. There are so many pedestrians out and about that it is often difficult to drive about mid-town and downtown. Pedestrians are walking without regard to the crossing lights and often you sit through your light waiting for them. That said, it's not an easy walk from MGM or Motor City but is an easy walk from Greektown. Now that Beacon Park is open, there are more people out and about around MGM but it's still walking along the service drive etc. to get to LCA. Any of the downtown hotels around the Ren Center or Washington Blvd would be fine. You can take the People Mover from the riverfront to Grand Circus and get off there and walk north about 3 blocks on Woodward to LCA. The Q Line is very popular now and I'm not sure if you're trying to ride at a time close to a major event that you would get right on. Anything downtown is going to be no longer than a 20-30 minute walk, max, and should be perfectly safe if around the times that events are going on. There is always a ton of police presence along Woodward.
There are tons of great places to eat. Let us know if you need recommendations.
