How often do you get to ZERO inbox?

What else do you get done in a typical shift? 8 hours is only 480 minutes. I recieve on average about 30 a day and reading them, researching the situation and planning an action takes several minutes each and that doesn't include actually answering them and/or implementing the necessary action. It takes a good chunk of my day and anything non-urgent gets worked in when I am able.

Well, I answer the phone. I dispatch crews. I call in live shots. I listen to the police and fire scanners. I handle requests from the ABC or other Television stations wanting our video. I handle any incidental requests that come up, like Nexis searches trying to find contact information for people, yesterday we had two people who don't normally go out need access to company cars, so I checked cars out to them and gave them the keys. I also search for archive video. I handle the monthly FCC report, we have to list five stories in six different categories that we have done that show we are broadcasting in the public interest in the past month. I have to escort guests for shows into the studio. Yup I keep busy. And the first five hours of my shift, I am the only one on the desk. The last three I have someone else there. She is alone for half an hour after I leave, then a second person comes in, and three hours after that there are 3 people on the desk.

That's what I suspected. Where do you find the approx. 2.5 hours needed to handle 300 e-mails (presuming 30 seconds per message)?

I always read my emails within an couple hours of them coming in, but my inbox is technically never at 0.

Just keep clicking. To be honest, some are duplicate so they get deleted without being opened. The ones that need to be moved into our files might take 30 seconds. Most can be evaluated in 5 or 10 seconds. We get a lot of "SO AND SO REACTS TO SOMETHING SOMEONE DID" emails. DELETE. We also get a lot of pitches for experts when anything happens want to do SKYPE interviews. We're looking for LOCAL experts if we need an expert, DELETE. My favorites are blanket emails for stores and restaurants introducing new services or menu items, and they are stores and restaurants that don't have any locations in our state let alone in our area. DELETE.
