Now I'm curious... Does anyone here have experience with Kaiser? Everyone here at work has this deep deep love for it... I was going to use a Dis-inappropriate phrase here :rotfl: But really I'm just curious, we have 4 plans here and individual costs are $38, $62, $82, or $119 per pay period. Everyone has the option to earn $500 off of their deductible if they do a health checkup, and if their spouse is on their plan and does a checkup another $500 (got that wrong in my last post). Then if you do the HDHP you get $500 in your HSA, and another $500 if it is a family plan. Our OOP max is pretty low on the HDHP plan, currently it's a no brainer for us but I was playing with numbers last year for a theoretical childbirth down the road...

But Kaiser just makes me curious because I have all these people around that think it's the best thing since sliced bread, then ILs are on it and have had horrible coverage/experiences. And the times I've been along with ILs or DHs grandparents I haven't been impressed...
We had kaiser for last 6 years. Just got on Cigna with dh’s new job. I hated kaiser. Just awful experiences all around for us. We had to go through treating my dd’s Lyme with kaiser and they covered exactly $0 of about $30k of treatment :furious:
My ds10 needed OT for social-emotional issues. Kaiser will cover OT for any other diagnosis pertaining to sensory disorders but not that one.

I could go on and on regarding what they don’t cover. All we’ve done with kaiser is pay out of pocket. I despise kaiser.

Well, I don't hang with the college crowd, lol! I prefer the beach in the off/shoulder seasons as the sunbathers are mostly gone. I've never seen strobe lights but I do know they do stuff like concerts on the Inlet end to attract the younger crowd, plus June is a right of passage for graduates in Maryland, so I never would go in June. The Inlet end is where the ferris wheel and games and other rides are. You might find me riding the trolley down there once every 3 or 4 years, but it's not my thing. I do stroll on the Boardwalk, buy some Thrasher's fries, Dolle's salt water taffy (only this one),

I went at the end of June. I was also near one of those amusement park things. I got a large one of those fries with cheese that was fun lol

I know we had some Dis’ers giving awesome advice for back strains. I decided my yard needed to trimmed before we go away so I was out there for about 1-1 1/2 hour on Sun doing despite my arms telling me I should give in but I persevered and completed the task. Yesterday and today I can barely walk and if I do, I look like an old lady. I tried ice all afternoon and evening along with Motrin and Aleve. And decided to try a warm bath yesterday and that made it feel worse. And today is miserable. I need it cleared up by Thurs morning since we fly to Universal that afternoon. Any suggestions? It’s mainly my lower back area.
FOR ME I can't use heat at all. I ice every hour for 20 minutes, laying flat on a yoga mat with my legs bent resting atop a large plastic storage box with a pillow on top for comfort. I wallk slowly for as long as I can for excercise. I don't bend over AT ALL. Unless is is spilling or staining it stays on the floor till dh gets home. I take 600 mg Advil am and pm and my drug of choice is an evening martini. Be sure to drink lots of water to keep your body parts hydrated. If you have one, see your chiropractor or massage therapist. Sitting is the worst thing for me.

Take care, and prayers for your trip on thursday.

I'm so thankful DH and I both have good insurance. He's on a high deductible plan with an HRA now because (knock on wood) I can rarely get him to go to a doctor for anything and he doesn't take any prescriptions. His deductible is $2500. I told him he's switching to the standard PPO insurance plan when he turns 40 though after his dad's heart attack at 52 with no warning signs. I'd rather pay more each month and have peace of mind than have the medical bills his parents had after his dad was on a high deductible plan and could no longer work.
It’s the accidents that will get you. We always have insurance thru DHs employer because despite the fact that I work in a hospital, my employer insurance sucks (plus it’s way more for PT employees). We had a PPO that was great, $500 deductible, all good. I fell and broke my knee, had surgery, second surgery, 6 months of PT. We paid a couple thousand which was not great but not terrible. FF a year, I have a 3rd surgery scheduled for April 2. DHs employer walks in 3/31 and tells everyone he sold the company and as of 4/1, new insurance which now has a 4K deductible. So suddenly we’re paying $5k
unexpectedly. New employer changes insurance every year, this year suddenly the PPO and HD plan have premiums virtually the same. I’ll take the PPO any day.

I really wanted to switch to Kaiser this year. The idea of going down the hall to take care of everything at once is very appealing to me. The only thing we couldn't get past was mental health services. A lot of it seemed to be group therapy type stuff, and I feel like that's not something you can pigeonhole. So our usual therapists wouldn't be covered, and if you didn't like the Kaiser therapists you were out of luck.

If I could figure out a workaround for that, I'd switch next year and try it out.

My mom has inhalers that cost $450 every 3 months. Plus her other meds. Between the meds and her property taxes she’s met MSR for her CIP in about 6 weeks.
As for the diabetes, yes much of it is lifestyle, but not all. My dad was never fat, maybe a few pounds overweight, with BMI still less than 25, but always active golfing and gym 3 times a week. He developed diabetes in his 60’s, progressed to insulin quickly (there’s another ridiculously expensive med) but controlled it well with an A1C less than 6. No family history, not overweight, still active, just unlucky I guess.

I opened the GS checking with $3500 on a Chase SW Biz, no problem. Applied for a Money market today, funded $5k with CIP. Not approved yet, but hopefully. You do have to make sure they are in your area, by zip code (who knew there’s a GSB in Chicago) and the application online is completed by phone when they call you to confirm and read you some T&C’s.

Thanks! I need to double check, but I'm pretty sure they're in my area. When I googled them earlier, a couple ATM locations actually came up on Google Maps!

DH lived in SoCal for the 2 years we were engaged so I did a lot of flying back and forth and other than La Jolla and the GC at DL, it wasn't my favorite place. I do feel I've given it multiple opportunities, though :)

I feel you. DH lived in VA Beach and we traveled back and forth to see each other for 6 years. I hate it down there lol.

We've been on a HDP for 2 years now. I will say it does what its supposed to in that it makes you think before running to the doctor. Ido think that it works in the negative at times as there are preventative visits/meds that people probably should take but don't because they can't afford paying for them full price on the HDP. I thought about moving back to the PPO in a few years when we get older and may need more meds but my suspicion is that my employer won't offer the PPO much longer. I think they are trying to shove us all to varying levels of HDP's.

Does your plan not give you free preventative visits? DH's plan does say there's no charge for a preventative visit. There isn't for me either on a PPO plan. I thought with Obamacare, preventative visits had to be free.

Yup, I do worry about the accident part of it. But he does have the HRA part of it and contributes to that. Unfortunately, his dad had just upped to a really high deductible plan right before his heart attack because he was healthy and didn't have any history of high blood pressure, heart disease, or high cholesterol. So new deductible to meet, and an even higher one.

In high school my boyfriend lived in Chesterfield and I lived in Chesapeake so BTDT, just in reverse (iirc you're around Richmond).

I've heard this multiple times regarding Kaiser. We currently have United Healthcare and while I haven't had the problems you listed above, they certainly wouldn't be my choice if I got to pick.

I saw this on another blog and thought it would be fun to do here. Name one place you've travelled to that you wouldn't return. For me it would be the Bahamas. Been there, done that. Not impressed. There are much better islands in the Carribean to visit such as Turks and Caicos, Aruba and Grand Cayman.

Rio. I just didn’t feel safe.

Yes, we do each get a free preventative visit each year. What I meant is if you've had that visit and lets say you start to feel dizzy periodically. With a PPO, if it went on long enough, you'd probably go in and get it checked and if the doctor had some recommendations go along with the treatment. With a HDP, knowing that your going to have to pay for the office visit and then any treatment at full cost (less whatever price your insurance has agreed to with the provider) people may not go. There are people who might benefit from more frequent preventative care. Now I work with a few hypochondriac's who have an -ologist for every ailment and they don't seem to mind paying for their visits :confused3 I certainly am mentally thanking them for driving up our company premiums as I listen to their tale of their latest testing.

Can I say Disney's All Star Resorts?? LOL! :lmao:

Interesting responses there on the blog question! So far seems like Bahamas, specifically Nassau is the leader lol.
@Lain, why did you say Beijing? I hear good things about Shanghai.

Lol why do you say that. The person I saw was a male probably about my age 22-27. He didn’t appear frightening, but I’m socially awkward and would not have gone up to him and said something lol
This guy was such a dweeb and bragging how he spent 20k on staples no fee VGCs!

Bahamas, LA, Vegas and New Orleans (I’m sure I’ll be placed in shun corner for NOLA). But I’d do many places around LA and if Vegas was a quick weekend with friends for a show I’d go back. I just found all the above places kind of dirty and seedy in parts.

Now I’ve been to Ireland 3x and lived there for 6 months and dream of going back all the time!!!

I have had Kaiser Mid-Atlantic for almost 25 years and absolutely love it! Everything is electronic which I absolutely love! When I pregnant with DS, the entire pregnancy (prenatal, delivery and post-natal) cost me $200 (the hospital co-pay) + whatever the hospital charged for the TV. I had to go to a patient care faculty in AZ for strep and they reimbursed me the out-of-network costs. $7 for prescriptions, $10 co-pay. I never spend more than $100-200 a year. Most years it is less than $50.

I have had nothing but extremely positive experiences. The doctors and specialists have all been great. I am very overdue for some female stuff and they remind me constantly.

I will say that DH, DS and I are very healthy and have ever required surgery or hospital stays (besides DS’s birth) so maybe that would be different.

Don't you dare speak ill about Las Vegas:yay::yay::yay:. Just kidding, I get it. People hate Dubai for the same reasons, everything is over the top and "fake". I have no desire to go to Dubai though.

i know nothing about Kaiser but they are gonna be making news in the next few days... some kind of major strike with the union... its not a small one, supposively gonna be one of the biggest strikes since 1997.
I’m guessing that might be their hospital division. Kaiser owns a number of hospitals in California. I have a friend that worked in one, and he said they didn’t have an ICU because California law says ICU nurses must be 1:1 (or maybe 1:2) with patients and Kaiser refused to staff that high a nurse to patient ratio so they eliminated ICUs in their hospital. They transferred out any patient needing a higher level of care. Not sure if it’s still that way.

@Alexle2007 alternate heat and ice immediately after each other. Take ibuprofen or naproxen around the clock for the anti-inflammatory benefits. Find a good chiropractor works wonders and the best stretch for me is the piraformis one!
