Is Mary Poppins Returns going to get an Oscar Nomination for best picture?

Remakes rarely measure up to the original.
Agree, but this is not a remake, this is a totally new movie including some new characters and all new songs.

The remarks I read from the guy who saw the whole movie was very impressed. He's no Disney fanboy but he is very much someone who loves Disney's classic films.

Our movie reviewer at work hasn't said yet if he liked it or not....he has seen it....it just said the trailer probably wasn't the best clip of the movie to release to promote it.

Hard to answer when we haven’t seen it yet. I hope it’s good, whether or not it wins any awards. For me (and many here I’m guessing), the fond connection to my childhood adds sentimental value.

I like both of the leads, and love that Dick Van Dyke is in it. Too bad they couldn’t find a role for Julie Andrews as well. (Maybe she declined or was unavailable for some reason?)

She had an operation years ago on her vocal cords. Before the operation, the Dr., a specialist guaranteed her she's still be able to sing. After the operation, she said she could no longer sing any of her high notes & she sued the Dr. (IIRC.)

It may be that this role, or having anything to do with the movie, or being reminded of a time when she could sing beautifully, is still too painful to her. :(

Or maybe she just plain didn’t want to. We have no way of knowing what she is thinking or she was offered a part.

According to Et, so take as you see fit, Andrews did not appear out of respect to Emily blunt. It’s her show...

Interesting. Of course Ms. Andrews had no obligation, but she must know her fans would’ve loved it. I do recall her surgery and issues with her voice, which is a real shame.

I’m looking forward to it. Was just reading more and wasn’t aware of all the stars in the cast, including Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Angela Lansbury, etc.

Also heard that Karen Dotrice, who played the young Jane in the original, has a cameo appearance. (Matthew Garber, who played Michael, sadly passed away at age 21.)

Screen Actor Guild nominations came out today, and Mary Poppins Returns didn't get nominated for best picture. Emily Blunt did get nominated for best actress though. Guess whether an Oscar is in it's future is still to be determined

It seems, pretty much anyone who sings in a movie gets nominated nowadays. It's not like the old days when actors & actresses were under studio contracts and the studio trained them to be what John Travolta calls a "triple threat," someone who can sing, dance & act. Like in Singing In The Rain.

Emily is double nominated:

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:
Emily Blunt, “Mary Poppins Returns”

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:
Emily Blunt, “A Quiet Place”

I suspect that her double nominations may cancel her out for winning Best Actress. Probably more people will vote for her to get supporting actress, if she wins at all. :scratchin

Interestingly, ALL actresses in the Supporting category have won an Oscar or other award already:

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role:
Amy Adams, “Vice”
Emily Blunt, “A Quiet Place”
Margot Robbie, “Mary Queen of Scots”
Emma Stone, “The Favourite”
Rachel Weisz, “The Favourite”
