Just to add to the confusion
Its my understanding that Disney would like all of its features to be fully CGI, they think its more marketable. But since they closed The Secret Lab and fired all the staff a year ago, they simply dont have the talent anymore. And all the good CGI animators have wonderful jobs at Pixar, Dreamworks, Blue Sky and a hundred other companies. No ones willing to toss it in for that hellhole reputation that Disney has right now.
The CGI/Traditional mix is simply a way around that problem using the Glenn Keane example from Treasure Planet. The few remaining talented character animators work in the method they already understand and their work is shoehorned into CGI. The word is already out that if you want to stay at DFA you better learn computers.
All the wacky projects Mr. Hill mentioned (very few will if any will actually be made) is the suits response to Lilo. Theyve attributed that films success to its offbeat premise and are trying to duplicate it. They are completely missing the point as usual. Lilo is a good movie because its made with care, imagination and heart not because it had a wacky premise that is easily marketed in one sentence.
