Masks?

I feel like that is the same where we are in BC, people feel safe because the numbers are low. I have started wearing my mask when I go in to stores, honestly it isn't that big of a deal for me. I know for the entire day they can become bothersome but I am lucky that at my job in retail we are able to wear a face shield which is easier to wear for the day. My ears don't get sore and it is not quite as hot. It does get in the way of answering a phone etc but we just laugh trying to use the phone etc. Have to keep everyone safe around us as well as ourselves.

I also noticed at walmart on the weekend they were not cleaning carts anymore and had both entrances opened instead of one as an entrance and one as an exit. I have some wipes I keep with me to use but that was the first time I had seen a store not handing over a clean buggy etc. I don't go out shopping that often so maybe that store has been like that for a few weeks.

Hi Hon
I noticed my Sobeys is no longer spraying down the carts or offering any hand sanitizer this past week.
I was at Loblaws last week and they have increased things they are doing,,
people outside washing carts
table inside door with wipes ,hand sanitizer
paper towels
host asking people to use the supplies, and directing people.
I felt much safer at Loblaws.

DH and I had a debate on whether kids will have to wear a mask at school this fall (so far, elementary school students in QC are all going back to in-person teaching in August unless they are high-risk). I am betting they will have to when not seated at their desk. DH doesn't think it will happen. I know that school staff and teachers had access to free PPE in the schools that re-opened in May but was not mandatory.

My girls will whine a little if they have to but they will wear them anyway. They understand why it's important and that everyone has to do their part.

I am not sure what Ontario will do, they seem to be setting up cohorts, my assumption is that the children would be in limited groups and shouldn't need masks in those.

But then I think about all the kids, and masks, and I remember that article/list I read from a mom/teacher and I wonder how it will work!

Here are some of them: It's really funny if you read them, and also a bit too honest.

Please don’t snap Billy’s mask in his face.

Your mask is not a necklace, bracelet, or any other form of jewelry.

You should not be using your mask as a slingshot. Please put it back on your face.

Please do not chew on your mask.

Your mask should be on your face, not on the back of your head

I’m sorry your mask is wet, but that’s what happens when you lick the inside of it.

I’m sorry you sneezed. Here’s a tissue. Wipe out the snot as well as you can.

No, you may not blow your nose in your mask.

Why is your mask soaking wet? You just came back from the bathroom?

And you put it back on your face after you dropped it?

I’m sorry you broke the elastic on your mask by seeing how far the band would stretch. Now you’ll have to hold the mask on your face … or use this duct tape.

Please take the mask off your eyes and watch where you’re walking. I don’t care if you have X-ray vision.

Please take the mask off of your pencil and stop twirling it.

I know the mask fits over your pants like a knee pad, but please take it off of your leg and put it on your face.

What do you mean you tried to eat your lunch through your mask?

Please don’t share your mask or trade masks. I don’t care if you like Ingrid’s mask better than yours.

I’m sorry, but your mask is not school appropriate.

We’re not comparing our masks to other kids’ masks… everyone’s mask is unique and special.

No, you may not decorate your mask instead of doing your work. I don’t care if you have a Sharpie.

You’re not a pirate, please take your mask off your eye.

Try to get the gum off as much as you can.

Please don’t use your mask to pick your nose.

I’m sorry you tripped, but that’s what happens when you put your feet inside the elastic of your mask

I would be interested in some comments, direct literature, personal thoughts, and discussion about face shields.
This would be for adult use in elementary grades.

Thanks Mel

I work in a retail store and this is what I wear when I am on the floor with customers. I agree that it does not stop my germs as well as a mask could do if I was to cough or sneeze etc. If I need to cough or sneeze, I get myself away from the area where customers are or as far as I can away.

I do find these a lot more comfortable to wear for an 8 hours shift because there is fresh air to breathe in and I don't have to fuss with it once it is on. They do get in the way when I am answering the phone or if I am trying to bend over to pick something off the ground etc but not to bad. Once our store is closed we do have the option to take the visor off and wear a mask instead. I usually do this if I will be cleaning up so I can get it done easier.

personally I don't feel as comfortable around people who are only wearing a shield for some reason. There's just sooo much space between the face and the shield, even if the person turns to cough or sneeze it still gets "out". I think the shield protects the wearer more than others

this is all just MY thoughts, nothing more

Just received some polypropylene masks from Quebec industrial retailer called Sylprotec. Shipping was $ as purolator $16 but arrived in Ontario within 6 days. Purchased 10 reusable polypropylene masks (their brand made in Quebec) plus some disposable polypropylene masks and a box of 50 disposable masks (those made in China). The reusable masks held up well to a double wash in washing machine warm water. Just air drying now. Polypropylene supposed to 1) be cooler to wear than cotton and 2) offer better filtration and protection to the wearer than cotton. Definitely no where near N95 protection but a step above basic cotton. Maybe same as cotton mask with filter? Don't know the details but the cooler part was the draw for me. I have to wear one for 9 hrs plus business meeting later next week so I'll let you know how comfortable it is. Not ear loop style but double over the back of the head elastic straps. My area has now enacted mandatory masks in stores and indoor business locations so after using cotton masks for many weeks, wanted to try a cooler alternative to cotton. Maybe just psychosomatic and I'll 'think' its cooler so will be cooler. :-) If I think I'm cooler, that's something.

Wearing one of the polypropylene Sylprotec masks around the house tonight and easy on the ears but a tight fit. Better for womens' face and teenager. Wouldn't be comfortable for larger man's face because of the 2 double over the head elastric straps. Squishes my nose a bit but doesn't ride up into my eyes and slip like the Old Navy cotton masks when I look down. Probably more protective because the edges are tighter around my face. But not a great fit for larger man. Might be good choice for teenagers with med-smaller face going back to school in the fall. In A/C so can't tell if much cooler than cotton right now.

Currently standing in a very very long socially distanced line at NoFrills . Of the approximately 30 people in the line I see 3 masks. And I’m one of them .
Also Niagara Regional council deadlocked with the mask vote last night . Final vote in a few weeks .And honestly I don’t even think regional council has the jurisdiction to force a mask mandate . It has to be the cities themselves .

And of course the crooked Niagara Falls mayor is more concerned about tourism than health and is vehemently against the mandate. Give that some strong consideration while he and his cronies are sending you all emails about how safe Niagara Falls is .

When I speak with family in the U.S. some are not wearing a mask when they're out and most are in states with high rates of Covid unfortunately. The one positive here is that rates are low but I'd still like to see everyone wearing a mask in stores for the foreseeable future. I'm finally getting around to buying some reusable ones.

I agree that masks should be worn everywhere. I'd also prefer if schools stay closed since it's unlikely measures like masks will be able to be enforced enough.

Parents will have the choice to keep their students home. But they have to open. Online learning just didn’t work for a lot of kids. And the kids need to get back to being around their peers for their development and mental health.

anyone who is looking for some cute, cloth masks and has access to a giant tiger you're in luck! They currently have a great selection of both adults and kids styles for 5.00! They were flying off the shelves yesterday according to our neighbours. Here's a few images I snagged from their website. You can also order them online but I seem to recall they have a crazy high free shipping mark

So........ Here it is my situation................................
In the Region of Peel masks ARE mandatory.
Minister of Education Lecce says masks in school are NOT mandatory.
Maybe he will change his mind.
My doctor says even with wearing a mask in a inside area I'm at risk,,all people are.
Financially I have to go back.
The good is I am only 1/2 days.
I shall try my best to use a mask,,but my skin may not be ok with it. (3 skin disorders).
I can try a shield but it is not as good as a mask says my doctor,,but better than nothing.
Well as my Nana would say "God Bless Us All" come September!

Yeah, I was surprised that what bothered me most was my facial skin. Maybe it's the moisture buildup under the seams that start rubbing? What would happen if you put a fine layer of vasiline under the mask? Would it lessen whatever seal there was? Would it exacerbate your skin issues?

Hi Hon
Unfortunately
when the temperature rises and moisture increases my skin does not expel the heat and moisture,,thus causing skin to erupt into pustules and rash.
something like this.
example picture.

Itching, pain and infection then become an issue.
A couple of years ago I lost all the skin on my hands and parts of my legs and ended up with skin infection, cellulitis. Weeks of antibiotic intravenous and allergic reaction to an antibiotic occured.
A very dark time in my life and I have family and a amazing skin specialist to thank for pulling me out of it.
Believe me when I say pain can be bad but itch is MUCH worst.
I will figure this out though, and appreciate everyone's ideas.
A friend suggested covering the foam on the PPE shield with cotton material.

That sounds horrible. And my naive idea would definitely not work for you. Hopefully, you can find something that works for you.

Do you have a cotton sheet/pillowcase that doesn't irritate your skin. That fabric could be used as the inside of a face mask. There are a number of styles that touch the face minimally. One I'm thinking of has the pleats/gathers at the nose an creates a pocket to breath.

breathable mask

If you think this is worth a try you could send me some cotton sheet fabric and I can make you one with pretty fabric on the outside.

Thank-you for your kind offer.
I have taken the video you posted and sent it to my sister in law (she sews) and I will do as you suggest and give her one of my super soft pillow cases. Thanks for the suggestion Hon.
I appreciate you.
