Merriam-Webster's Word of 2019 is...

When I was in middle school, we used to be constantly corrected about using "they". The teachers wanted "he or she" or "one". I always found that so awkward.

I 100% support people with different gender identities but "they" was the worst possible choice to use as a pronoun.

I have a good friend who uses They pronouns. I'm happy about this. After all, it could have been "influencer," a word I despise.

They just sounds like someone with split personalities. Perhaps an entirely new word should have been created.
Well, like I said, "they" has been used as a singular pronoun since the 14th century. It wasn't until the 17th century that grammarians decided to use "he" to mean either gender.
