When I was in middle school, we used to be constantly corrected about using "they". The teachers wanted "he or she" or "one". I always found that so awkward.
Well, like I said, "they" has been used as a singular pronoun since the 14th century. It wasn't until the 17th century that grammarians decided to use "he" to mean either gender.They just sounds like someone with split personalities. Perhaps an entirely new word should have been created.
