LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hot on the heels of the box office success of "The Lion King 3D," Disney and Pixar are reviving four of their classic animated films in 3D versions for movie theaters.

Banking on the success of "The Lion King 3D," which is set to cross the $80 million U.S. box office threshold on Tuesday, the movie studio said it would release a 3D version of 1991 fairytale "Beauty and the Beast" in January 2012 for a limited run in movie theaters.

It will be followed by Pixar's sea-adventure"Finding Nemo" in September 2012, "Monsters, Inc." in January 2013 and the classic 1989 Disney romance "The Little Mermaid" in September 2013.

"Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we're fortunate to have a treasure trove of both," saidAlan Bergman, president, The Walt Disney Studios.

"We're thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D - and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen," Bergman said in a statement.

Since 1994,"The Lion King" has earned some $883 million at the worldwide box office, including recent sales from the 3D version of the beloved tale of the African animal kingdom.

Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid" have so far earned $380 million and $228 million worldwide respectively.

Pixar's 2001 hit "Monsters, Inc." made $526 million worldwide and the 2003 Oscar-winning film "Finding Nemo" made more than $867 million.

Ill go see B&B and TLM maybe MI may Nemo burn in the fiery depths if Hades!

Wow no Aladdin that film never gets love!

I'm really excited to see Beauty and the Beast, now! I wished that they had done it in theatres before it's diamond edition release, and I'm glad they're going to put the 3D version on the big screen :goodvibes

They did, just not in 3D. We saw it in the theaters last year. They did two releases -- an IMAX and a Fathom Events, I believe... we went to the Fathom showing.

The theater had maybe 20-30 people in it, and the IMAX release didn't do very well at all, from what I recall. I think they're hoping the 3D makeover will lead to a different result.

I wonder if Monsters Inc will be a double-header like TS2 & TS3? I thought Monsters U was set to be released in 2013 but I cant remember when :confused3 Any Ideas?

On a tangent, this gives me hopes for a Star Wars Land after all. Disney's clearly been hanging around Lucas pretty heavily, to the point of milking their stable of films with repeated releases, each with a technical tweak. :rotfl2:

That's so weird- I was looking for it, but never saw anything about it. I guess my town just didn't get it, and I must have missed anything about it online.

So, when I was a kid, Disney used to put out the old movies every 7 years or so.

Now they will just 3-D them.

Things really don't change much.

will the release of the movies coincide with a release of the dvd's of the movie like the lion king? i'm assuming now being that beauty and the beast was only released on dvd a year ago.

Not a big fan of Beauty and the Beast, but I'd really like to see Nemo in theaters again.

Gawd if we are going to suffer Nemo again can they at least change the end. I'd really like to see Bruce eat that fish.

I can't wait for the Little Mermaid! I saw the Lion King in 3-D and it was an awesome experience. I am also looking forward to the Pixar movies!

That's a long time to wait for The Little Mermaid...but I know I will go see it as soon as it comes out!

I just said OOOOOHHH, and DH said that is never a good sound when I make it. I cannot wait for BATB in 3D, I will go alone if I need to. That is going to be an incredible movie, and I can't wait to go see it. Now I am SUPER EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Count me in !!!!!!!!!!!!!
