New Luxury Disneyland Hotel put on hold

I think the address change was just an excuse to not give the tax break. The new council doesn't seem to want to do it. I don't blame them. Tax breaks like this can be good and bad. I think Disney will eventually build the hotel even if they don't get the money. However, they don't seem to be filling their current hotels all the time. I don't know what else they would do with that area, except put the tenants back in. Personally, after staying at the Disneyland Hotel for the first time last month, I will be very disappointed to see the new hotel built. I love how the set up is now. It will really have a negative effect on the way DLH looks and feels.

The council has been getting into feuds with Disney more and more as of late. While I understand not wanting to give a major corporation all the breaks possible but Anaheim is what it is today because of Disney. Its the biggest money maker they have.

They will have to do something. Leaving several large buildings vacant would not be a good thing.

The city had several bids by other hoteliers to build a luxury property within the city. They will just likely go after them to find out who is still interested. They don't need Disney to be the one to build the hotel.

No they don't need Disney to build the hotel but Disney is their biggest money maker. Like I said in the other thread neither side likes each other right now which could be bad for both Anaheim and Disney.

The Walt Disney Company has gotten a series of sweetheart deals over the years. One of the most beneficial ones involves the Mickey and Friends parking structure. From the LA Times:

"Anaheim agreed in 1996 to issue $510 million in bonds to finance various infrastructure improvements, the expansion of the Anaheim Convention Center and the construction of the $108.2-million Mickey & Friends parking structure, which Disney needed for California Adventure and other projects. When the 40-year bonds, which include roughly $1.1 billion in interest, are paid off, Anaheim will transfer ownership of the garage to Disney. Meanwhile, the company pockets the parking revenue."

Imagine what would happen if a regular business went to their local government and insisted on getting a free parking structure and keeping 100% of the fees people pay to park there. They would get laughed at.

I can't say I feel sorry for Disney losing this tax incentive. They've gotten more than enough for "free" over the years.

This is very surprising, I don’t know a thing about the politics, but I’m surprised Disney didn’t have this all figured out before tenants were requested to leave. This shall be interesting to watch. . . .

Conversely, the City of Anaheim got a sweetheart deal when Walt Disney decided to set up shop there.

Very sad as you said that you would give them the tax break if they build the hotel and now change your mind before groundbreaking.

Jobs and new hotel space wasted from Anaheim...Disney’s your money maker, you’ll make this money back 10 fold

The tax break was intended to drive development off-property throughout Anaheim. Disney moved to take advantage of tax incentive, whether they qualify or not is now a matter for the courts.

The Anaheim City Council went through a major change in 2016, after this tax incentive was passed, it was expanded to 7 members and the representation became district-based instead of "at large" based. There is a long standing belief that the money to city invests in tourism is disproportionate to the money generated by the tourism, as other priorities are neglected. There have been some comparisons to large college football programs, where the revenue generated does not benefit the rest of the university and may actually cost the rest some resources. Just giving a general overview of the mode, not necessary my belief.

Disney isn’t a regular business and most regular businesses don’t bring in the money like Disney does for a city. While Disney surely shouldn’t get every break they want it seems the two side are not on good terms right now which may not be good.

This was Anaheim pulling the plug after the tenants were out. Had Anaheim said something sooner maybe they would’ve extended the tenants.

Yep and that change in the council changed the relationship between them and Disney.

Just a suggestion to look into funding of major sports stadiums, large department stores, Amazon HQ East, casino deals, etc. The giving away of the public till is widespread and common. The justification appears to be the income from personal income tax of the new hires justifies the loss of property tax for a specific time frame. Florida Marlins in Miami comes to mind as an egregious example of tax incentives that allows a private business to keep parking and seat revenue as part of the deal to build.

A second thought, the moving of the hotel was caused by the loss of the Eastern Gateway project? Any ideas if the attempt to extend over the access road had anything to do with relocating the hotel? I don't remember the original map of development along Harbor...

The Milwaukee Bucks arena and Foxconn project in WI are other examples of giving government money to fund projects. I think the difference here is Disneyland helped build Anaheim into what it is today whereas something like a sports team hasn’t necessarily.

Anaheim was always going to benefit a lot from LA growth though so Disney alone didn't create them in the same way Disney made Orlando known worldwide. What I think it comes down to is the local politicians want a target and Disney is well known as has a huge impact. They know Disney can't leave so they see less incentive to give them these breaks now. If Disney stops putting money into the park, ultimately they will be the ones to lose more than Anaheim will.

I agree to an extent. I think is Disney does stop investing in DL both sides lose. Right now this is just a battle between two sides who are upset with each other. This current fight began with the Eastern Gateway and is spiraling. The Mayor of Anaheim Tom Tait is not running again in November due to term limits so it will be interesting to see where the new mayor lies.
