New Roseanne show “The Connors” will air on ABC without Roseanne Barr

Seems like a losing proposition.
Can't believe they are wasting money making a show that probably won't do well in the already overcrowded TV show arena.
I read that since they had already renewed it, they had to pay everyone for 7 episodes, no matter what. Take away Rosanne Barr’s salary, and they are probably not spending any more money.

In this business, it's all about ratings and money!

:earsboy: Bill

Not when your station is about to be boycotted.

Bill Cosby's done. Don't know if the "Cosby Show" will ever return in re-runs.

It'll be a long time, if ever, that the original "Roseanne" show returns in re-runs.

ABC (owned by Disney) has a family-oriented focus. Roseanne's bigotry wasn't tolerated, so
she's gone.

I would point to Frasier via Cheers. Cheers, led arguably by Ted Danson, was only used for cameo appearances on Frasier (Kelsey Grammer - who was nowhere near being a lead character). But your point is valid that the odds are likely stacked against them.

"Cheers" was an ensemble cast. I wasn't aware of Ted Danson until "Cheers".

"Frasier" was the star of his show.

On "Cheers" Frasier had lead story lines with Diane and Lilith.

Seems like a losing proposition. Spin offs RARELY do that well (there have been exceptions) and a direct spinoff where the star of the show is just plain missing? The fans that enjoyed Roseanne because of her direct humor won't tune in.

They have an open slot that needs filling with less time than normal.
They have the set, the crew and the cast.
They likely have financial commits they could not get out of.
This is likely the cheapest, easiest way to fill the slot ... for next season.
I don't think they will be able to pull it off .... but if they do, ABC didn't have to totally start over.

Wonder why Sony isn’t cancelling releasing Peter Fonda’s movie after his disgusting, vile talk??? If Roseanne got cancelled, Fonda’s movie should of been cancelled for sure.

Maybe because Sony believes that the public should decide. Disney is likely more concerned about appearances too.

And we’re at the part of this threads lifespan where someone brings up a completely different situation which in turn makes the receiving talk so political that the topic gets locked. Just like the last incarnation of this thread

This is bound to fail simply because its obvious they will water it down. Make it uncontroversial, PC it up to death, and change the style.

At least that is my opinion on it.

She said something dumb. People should be allowed to apologize and move on from a bad situation. I wouldn't have canceled the show.

She didn't say something dumb, she said something racist. It wasn't the first time and it won't be the last so ABC decided enough was enough and cut ties. I'm not sure why they went for the reboot to begin with, given her history.

I've heard people say much more vicious things that are considered racist then what she said and nothing has happened to them. Either way, saying something racist IS dumb. That is the point. It was an insensitive comment that was out of line. I personally am not the kind of person who runs to scream someone needs to be fired when doing something stupid. Her history is that she is a hardcore comedian, just like Richard pryer and george carlin. Believe me, if they were alive today doing stand up, they would be destroyed by the PC crowd.

Either way this takes away from the point of the thread.

There shouldn't be a reboot, but I am happy the cast gets their money and gets to be in the spotlight

Who mentioned politics??? You need to re-read my quote. Talked about vile comments made by Peter Fonda, never once mentioned politics. But maybe you can answer why Peter Fonda’s movie hasn’t been cancelled???

Because you’re bringing something up that has zero relevance to the actual topic. This is a topic about the spinoff “The Connors”, not about the consequences of social media. By trying to deflect the topic of this thread which is well past the comments Roseanne made and is now about the nature of spinoffs by trying to make it political by mentioning someone who spoke ill of the president’s son. If I were to go onto the separate thread that announced Jennifer Lee and Pete Doctor being promoted to chief creative officers of Walt Disney animation and Pixar respectively and posted “but what about John Kricfalusi allegedly having child porn and dating teenagers” it would’ve been the exact same thing that you’re doing here. By bringing up, in regards to threads, a past generation of topic that is technically political because it does involve the consequences of the first amendment and the president’s son yes it is political in regards to what we’re talking about now. It’s over, the thread where we talked about that is locked, and you’re bringing up an outside conflict in a sense because you’re bitter about the results and see an outpost here you thought would be appropriate. This is not the thread to talk about Pete Fonda this is the thread to talk about “The Connors”. I’m not a moderator so I could very well be wrong here but I’m tired of seeing threads locked because of stuff like this

No. She apologized and they still kicked her to the street. Never liked her nor the show....but I don't like how they treated her. Totally unfair.

You can apologize for the first time. You might even get away with the second. When you have a pattern, over many years, of making inappropriate comments on many topics and you seem unable to regulate your mouth (or keyboard as the case may be), you start to run out of people willing to accept apologies. Especially when her comments reflect on them as an employer.

This wasn't an isolated incident and she had been warned about it by ABC before they agreed to hire her according to several cast members. There really is no room for her to complain. She knew they had a low tolerance for her extra curricular craziness, they warned her, she screwed up, they fired her. Most companies are going to follow that pattern. There is nothing unfair about it.
