No Kids, Gnu Year! Ringing in 2018 at WDW! **Complete 8/31**

Great pics from the Riverboat! I don't think I've ever been on it either! (Unless I did when I was kid but then I have no recollection of it!)

Glad you had a great meal at Skippers Canteen!

Aww man it's always sad to leave but also even worse when you dont know when your next trip will be!

They said a ghost would follow us home, so we decided to stay busy and maybe lose him, because dogs supposedly bark at ghosts and I just don't want to deal with extra barking!

Smart. ::yes::

Back on land we saw the next group lined up and waiting:

We love Skipper's Canteen!! I'm having such a hard time not booking it for our next trip. We want to try new things, but this is a favorite.

I love it, too! And I especially love riding JC before going there, like you did, to get in the right mood. I can't seem to book a trip without booking an ADR here. On my solo trip, the server almost sold me on the steak, and then I went with something else, so I felt like I needed to book it for August to go back and try it. Your food there sounded delicious!!

We exited the Magic Kingdom for the final time on this trip and I cried. Like, I CRIED. People stared. I am always sad when I leave MK for the final time of a trip, but this time I didn't know when I'd be back, and it hit me all at once.

:sad1: So much harder to leave if you don't know when you'll be back!! :sad1:

In the next update...find out what would be our BEST MEAL EVER!!

Ooh, I'm intrigued!

I’m glad you survived the :crowded: in Epcot
Yea to empty parks early the next day
Love the selfies and your ears
Very cool detail you spotted with the read eyes
Very cute PP pics
One of these days we need to ride the Liberty Belle just for the gorgeous views
Yes Jungle Cruise/ Jingle Cruise is the best!
Glad you enjoyed Skippers Canteen I read mixed reviews

it was touch and go there for awhile...they need escape hatches all along the WS! It gets intense!
The liberty belle is a unique experience! It forces you to slow down, which is hard for me to remember to do sometimes.
Jungle Cruise makes me so happy :cloud9:
We have had one good experience and one great experience, so I definitely recommend Skipper's.

Glad you had a great meal at Skippers Canteen!

Aww man it's always sad to leave but also even worse when you dont know when your next trip will be!

It was a fun, different experience. I'd change one thing - that it wasn't cold and rainy, LOL
Writing about Skipper's today made me want cachapas and that soup!
Ugh, it was bad, I couldn't believe how serious the crying situation was there for a second :rotfl:I haven't decided where it ranks in terms of embarassing-ness when I compare it to our first family trip when I ugly cried all over Winnie the Pooh - that was rough

Smart. ::yes::

Ooh, I'm intrigued!

right? I felt like it was just the practical decision. I get mad enough when someone rings the doorbell and they bark, how am I supposed to be expected to deal with barking at ghosts? Unacceptable.

Hmm...I never thought about the steak there! I will always, always order the cachapas (please, gods of skipper's canteen, please please never remove them from the menu!), but I also want to branch out and try an actual entree.

It was the saddest. Thing. Ever.

It's a GOOD meal, I can't wait to talk about it!!

I hadn't either until the server bragged it up. Now it seems like it's worth a try. I always order the Tastes Like Chicken, because as a non-gluten-eater, it's not something I could usually eat at home. But I really want to try the steak and the Sankuru Sadie's Seafood Stew. And maybe the char siu pork. And I'd never thought much about it before, but now that I've read your review I want to try the hot and sour soup, too!! So much to eat...so little time...

That is a winning NYE in my book!

Can you believe I still haven't finished the show? :rotfl: After NYE, I watched most of season 4 (which I'd never watched before), and then stopped watching before the last 3 episodes. I mean it's taken me 14 years to finish it, what will I do next?

Thank you! This is why we are friends! I was very excited about this discovery, LOL!!

:thumbsup2

Eventually I couldn't stand it anymore and I braved the rain to take some pictures. I couldn't resist all the new angles of BTMRR, seeing Splash from afar, and getting a little glimpse of the castle. Not to mention seeing a few new friends along the way.

I love it! We've never gotten to ride the Liberty Belle. All our time in Dec was at night after it wasn't running, and it's been under refurbishment for awhile so we didn't get to it in May either.

I love this tree!

I love the Santa hat on the tarantula :rotfl:

I love when they put santa hats on tarntulas or dinosaurs (like Gertie) :rotfl:

We exited the Magic Kingdom for the final time on this trip and I cried. Like, I CRIED. People stared.

I feel like every time we leave it gets harder to go especially if we've had a really good trip  Sometimes if I'm not feeling well (like the blister thing in Sep or if I'm sick) I feel a bit relieved to be getting home, but the last 2 trips we did in May and the one in Dec I was so sad when we left! May is usually the only time we leave from Disney and not USO, and both times I cried when we got home. Leaving Epcot was so hard last trip because the weather had been super hot most the week, and was perfect that day! I could picture what a perfect night we'd have if we could've stayed. Now I'm depressed all over again thinking about leaving Disney before we get there :rotfl:

Ok, it's time to get the rest of this day knocked out! This is the evening of our BEST MEAL EVER and I am so excited to revisit this restaurant again on New Year's Eve THIS year!

Chapter Five Part Four

After crying in front of everyone while leaving the Magic Kingdom, we took the bus back to Kidani Village.

If anything could cheer me up, it was definitely that "Welcome Home" written over the door! Kidani really tries to push the cozy factor of the resort, and it works:

The warm glow of the lanterns certainly helps! Especially on a day as chilly and gloomy as this one.

We made the loooooooooooooooooooooong walk to our room (seriously, it was the worst) where we were just lazy and watched more Criminal Minds. I love the channel that plays marathons of it all day long!

Before leaving I changed clothes about three times and hated the way I looked in all of it. It was freezing so I was zipped up in a black fleece the whole time, so I guess it didn't really matter what I wore anyway.

We took an uber to our destination for the evening...The Grand Floridian.

We were on our way to Citricos!

DH admired the cars out front:

I realized DH had never been in the Grand Floridian before...I forgot that the last time he'd have had the opportunity, he'd taken X to urgent care while L and I had breakfast here. We caught our first glimpse of the holiday decorations:

and I caught a glimpse of Mary Poppins, so I had to run over and snap a picture

I love Mary Poppins, so why does she have the most boring topiary ever?

Ok, that's enough time outside, it was freaking cold! Let's go in and warm up already!

DH was appropriately impressed ::yes::

We had to go check out the gingerbread house of course:

Why is Santa so ANGRY on this front porch??

Is he just annoyed by the super cheerful snowman on the other side?

There was also a chocolate egg in the lobby, which didn't strike me as odd at the time, but now it does. I've never heard of a Christmas Egg before :confused3

Whatever, it was pretty anyway!

We stepped out back to see more decorations:

And then went to Mizner's Lounge to warm up with drinks. It took FOR-EV-ER to be served here. There was only one waitress and she was being trained - she worked at another bar on property and had just started at Mizner's. Her trainer was there for awhile but left. The bar wasn't all that crowded but she was having a hard time keeping up b/c she had two larger groups.

I think DH had the Manhattan??

and I had the chocolate martini, as evidenced by this terribly contrived photo, lol:

I get a better picture of the bread and butter with dinner, don't worry :rotfl:

The lounge was dark and cozy. Some of the people had been there for quite awhile and were a little noisy. We were glad when they left.

We finished our drinks and went to check in.

We were seated quickly and had a nice table by the window

I enjoy booking first available ADRs for dinner because it's quieter. We were among the first groups seated:

We were off to a good start, I couldn't wait to see the food!!

Next part coming up as fast as I can type it!

Chapter Five Part Five

Our server came with bread and salted butter (the best part of any meal, right??)

We tried our best not to stuff our faces embarrassingly fast, even though we were hungry!

We planned to order all three courses here with the wine pairing, and we both started with arancini:

This was delicious!! Perfectly crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The sauce was flavorful without being overwhelming, and was just enough flavor to add to the arancini itself.

For entrees, DH had the beef short ribs: Polenta, exotic mushrooms, winter greens, pickled cippolini, and gremolata.

and I had the oak grilled beef filet: potato puree, dragon carrots, cippolini jam, and bordelaise.

My filet was perfect, and DH's was even better. His dish was the winner by a slim margin.

After all that yummy food and two glasses of wine, we were feeling pretty full, but we could not pass up dessert.

I had the key lime tart (which is not on the allears menu and I have no photo of the menu for the description):

DH had the warm chocolate - banana torte: with Vanilla Ice Cream and Handcrafted Belgium Couverture Chocolate Crown

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

I think we skipped the dessert wine pairing...it was already way more than I normally drink in a short time, combined with the drink before dinner.

Both desserts were some of the best we've ever had at Walt Disney World.

In fact, we decided this was the best MEAL we've ever had at Walt Disney World. This trip had no shortage of great meals, some of our best ever, so for this one to be a step above was really saying something.

We can't wait to come back!

When we left we went to Basin and I made a few purchases, and we watched the band play:

The original plan was to go watch Happily Ever After at the Magic Kingdom after dinner, but when I checked the weather app and saw this:

The last thing I wanted to do was stand outside in the drizzle when it felt like 35 degrees outside.

We weren't quite ready to go back to Kidani yet though, so we hopped on the monorail

This is as close as we got to the Magic Kingdom...

We decided to stop at the Polynesian and check out Boutiki, and of course admire the lobby

DH was ready to go back to Kidani now, so I decided it was time to finally take a Minnie Van! I fired up the Lyft app and soon one was on the way to us. When we saw they were approaching we walked outside to brave the cold and noticed this cool flower arrangement:

Our driver pulled up

and we got in. I was so ready for this Minnie Van ride after it never quite worked for me on my October trip.

We enjoyed talking to our driver, who had worked for the parks in one capacity or another for several years. When we told him how far away our room at Kidani was from the lobby, he said he'd had a passenger a couple weeks before with the same issue, and he dropped us off in the Pumbaa parking garage so we could take the elevator up to our floor and reduce our walk by almost 2/3. He got a good tip!!

Then...we got back to the room and took off my jacket and I made a horrible, horrible realization. I left my Basin bag in the Minnie Van :sad:

DH leapt into action, made a few phone calls, and our extra amazing driver came BACK to us after dropping off his current passenger, even going back to the Pumbaa garage to make the walk shorter for us when DH ran down to get it. I was so grateful!

Basin was saved!!

That's it! The next update will be in a day or two...our last park day of the trip! (finally!!)

I should have guessed Citricos!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! We also had an awesome meal there when we went for the first time this winter, too. Sooo wonderful. I wish we'd booked an ADR to go back, but we wanted to check a few new places off our list, so we're trying Narcoossee's this time instead. I feel like Citricos will be the winner by a landslide though! :)

What an awesome Minnie van driver you had!! I'm so glad you didn't end up losing your precious Basin purchases. I'm very serious about Basin. ::yes::

Wow-how great! I love those Disney CMs who go above and beyond!

Enjoying your TR! You were brave to tackle the New Year's crowds! Seeing the wait times and crowd pictures, I could handle it but my DH could NOT. We typically go early Dec. which we both really like. Great decision to get to MK early on New Year's Day. It seems to work for us too going early to a park that had EMH the night before. Especially MK. I can relate to the tears - I don't have another trip on the calendar and it's killing me.....

Great pics at the GF! Your dinner sounds amazing! I'm glad you will get to go again this year :)

Ugh that would have been so tragic if you couldn't get your Basin bag back! What an awesome driver!

Ah, those meals at Skippers Canteen and Citricos look amazing! We had an ADR at Skippers for the last day of our last trip but I cancelled it because I was worried we would miss our flight. Can't wait to try it next time!

lol, i have shows like that. The OC is part of your life now, finishing it will feel like an accomplishment...but also disappointing b/c it's over
We have a lot of shows we get super into and then one day we stop watching and spend the rest of forever saying, "we should finish..." Ozark is the main one right now. We started it, it took me a few episodes to get into it, then I was really loving it...and now we haven't watched in months. Season Two starts soon, will we or won't we?? :rotfl2:

It's not a very thrilling ride but I'm glad we finally did it! It was the perfect day for it too, although pictures would have been prettier with a blue sky! It was relaxing though, and if it had been a hot, busy day, it would have been awesome. (unless it was hot and crowded ON the boat, then no way!)

All animals should have hats during Christmas ::yes:: It makes me ridiculously happy. A couple of my dogs tolerate sweaters (they get cold, and also, I think it makes them feel fancy. Howie growls when you try to take his off to wash) but not hats...not hats at all :sad2: The rhino on Jingle Cruise needs a hat! They gave the gorillas hats.

Oh no, don't be sad now!! I do that too. Leading up to the trip I do the whole, "One week from today we'll be in MK!" and then we get ready for the trip and it changes to, "One week from today our trip will be over "
I always say that airports make me get over the sadness and make me ready to be home. We get to MCO and the process of getting through security and finding the gate really take me out of the magic, lol.

I'm glad you had a good visit to Citricos too! I strongly considered Narcoossee's for NYE this year (in time for early fireworks), but I'm the only one who cares all that much for seafood and we'd all probably get the steak, LOL. It's so pretty inside there, though. I need to start a PTR after I finish this just to talk it out, haha! Citricos was just such a perfect experience.

Wow-how great! I love those Disney CMs who go above and beyond!

I was so grateful!!

Re-using Easter decorations? :rotfl:

:rotfl:

So glad you had a great meal at Citricos, we'll have to try it someday!

lol, maybe that's it!! you know how everyone likes to talk about Disney cutting corners :rotfl:

you should definitely try it! I know we just had the one meal there, but it's moved right to the top of the list for us. I hope the next visit is just as good, and it wasn't just the wine, or us being excited to have a nice meal without the kids tagging along, LOL.

Enjoying your TR! You were brave to tackle the New Year's crowds! Seeing the wait times and crowd pictures, I could handle it but my DH could NOT. Thank you! I never thought NYE would be something we'd even think about doing, but when my friend needed to sell her DVC reservation, how could I not? DH and I had been wanting to go by ourselves for a long time, and the timing (school/kid wise) worked perfectly. Even though we had a great time, I said NEVER AGAIN to going over the new year, and yet here we go again and with kids this time. This ties into not having a trip booked - I was so desperate that the first opportunity for all four of us to go was during NYE and I wanted to just get back so badly I didn't care :rotfl::rotfl: Here's hoping I don't regret that!

Great pics at the GF! Your dinner sounds amazing! I'm glad you will get to go again this year :)

Ugh that would have been so tragic if you couldn't get your Basin bag back! What an awesome driver!

It was such a good meal. The hard part about picking Disney meals for me is the desire to try new places every time, but also knowing that I can only eat certain things at certain restaurants and I can't just have it any old time I want, so it makes me want to book again. I have already done a lot of overthinking on this one, but it was just so awesome!

I was so upset! And SO mad at myself!! DH kept saying, "if we can't find it you can just order it online", but then it wouldn't be DISNEY basin! (which i know is crazy, but hey, i will own that craziness, lol). At first I was a little afraid I'd left it at the Poly and I knew I'd never get it back if that was the case. But then I remembered putting it in the floorboard. I couldn't believe they found it and that he was so willing to come back (and meet us in the garage instead of making us walk all the way to the lobby)

Ah, those meals at Skippers Canteen and Citricos look amazing! We had an ADR at Skippers for the last day of our last trip but I cancelled it because I was worried we would miss our flight. Can't wait to try it next time!

Oh, I understand that. I've done that before with meals - I hope you get to try it next time. I just love it!

Now I'm depressed all over again thinking about leaving Disney before we get there :rotfl:

Oh no, don't be sad now!! I do that too. Leading up to the trip I do the whole, "One week from today we'll be in MK!" and then we get ready for the trip and it changes to, "One week from today our trip will be over "

I do this, too! Our August trip has so much fun stuff planned that I'm already sad for when it's over. And it's even worse, because it'll basically mean the end of my summer, and heading right back to school when it's done.

That pink tree from the Grand Floridian is just gorgeous!!! I love Victorian elegance! I've never been to the GF either, but we are having breakfast at 1900 Park Fare in November so we will have the chance to see it.

AKL is so wonderful, isn't it? It's just beautiful and feels like being in a cozy resort. I love being there.

The GF is so gorgeous especially at Christmas time
So glad you enjoyed Citricos it is wonderful
We can’t wait to return in March
Basin is a must do DD loves the bath bombs
What excellent service with your Minnie Van driver

Exactly I'll finally be done, but then there will never be new episodes of The O.C. again. Which I know there hasn't been in like 10ish years but for me there still are :rotfl:Oh yeah, after we cut cable I left a lot like that, there's also shows I'm sick of but feel like I should watch the rest of. Like The Originals, which I stopped watching ages ago, but I heard there's a spin off so now I'm like should I finish it?

It's not a very thrilling ride but I'm glad we finally did it! It was the perfect day for it too, although pictures would have been prettier with a blue sky! It was relaxing though, and if it had been a hot, busy day, it would have been awesome. (unless it was hot and crowded ON the boat, then no way!)

I've never wanted to do it when it was too hot out, but in Dec it was closed so we never got the chance when it wasn't.

ll animals should have hats during Christmas ::yes:: It makes me ridiculously happy. A couple of my dogs tolerate sweaters (they get cold, and also, I think it makes them feel fancy. I agree :rotfl:

I always say that airports make me get over the sadness and make me ready to be home. We get to MCO and the process of getting through security and finding the gate really take me out of the magic, lol.

I do that too! I'm usually pretty good at not worrying about it on the trip because when our trips start it feels so long, but then on the last day I'm like nooooo. Yeah, the airport ruins everything :rotfl: At the end of the last trip I had started to feel like I was coming down with something on the last day, and I was okay while we were there because I wanted to try and enjoy the last day, but by the time we hit the airport I felt even worse, and then the flight was delayed and I was miserable until we got home.

So glad you came back to this!! I was excited when I saw it while I was scrolling :)

Those Epcot pictures gave me anxiety and it's 8 months after the fact. Woof. Nope. I was contemplating a birthday trip the week of my birthday but it'd have to be over NYE and I don't think I have the stamina to do that. Or the patience.

I need to reply to some quotes, but I'll have to do that later...We've finally made our way to our last park day! Let's get it started!

Chapter Six: Are we really in Florida?? Because I'm freezing.

Our last park day

I was equal parts excited and bummed out by this day. We had some great things planned, but OMG it was freezing! I wasn't sure how long we'd last in the park. But first things first...breakfast!

I knew DH would be very excited about our breakfast plans this morning. It was Boma! After a good experience there on my solo trip, I knew I had to take DH. Our reservation was early, before the shuttle to Jambo House started, so we had to make the walk over.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

It was so. cold. And damp, which made things worse.

We were so happy to enter the lobby and see this beautiful tree

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

Mostly b/c seeing the tree meant we were inside where there was heat!! I kind of wanted to just climb into the fireplace and snuggle down into the burning logs.

We checked in, admired the tree near the waiting area, and were seated within ten minutes or so.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

I'll just say it, breakfast buffets are wasted on me. The problem is, when I go to one, I usually find one thing I REALLY like, and then convince myself I need to go again. In Boma's case, my must have is the bread pudding. My plates:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

:rotfl::rotfl:

No, I did not manage to eat all that bread pudding (with BOTH sauces...do not forget to get both!), but I get really excited about it, ok? The other plate that I think I only ate the fruit from was an egg thing involving goat cheese (I'm not a picky eater at all, but I hate goat cheese. I always try things with it, just in case, but no. It's the one truly horrible food.), some other kind of casseroleish thing, and the house made nutella that they raved about. Sorry, regular nutella is better. This was weird and waxy with very little hazelnut flavor.

I don't have a picture of DH's plate, but he got better stuff. More variety and a true representation of why this is one of the best breakfasts on property.

We were going to Animal Kingdom. DH was anxious to see Pandora!

No blue skies or sunshine today, kids!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

The positive of all this was very low crowds for the moment

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

If you followed my other reports, you might recall that in October I found the best Disney wall ever, that hasn't yet taken off on social media: The Awkwardly Shaped Monkey Wall. It's right outside of the restrooms near the Starbucks (creature comforts?? is that what it's called?)

I promised a selfie there, so here's one (there's a reason I don't wear hats, my face is not made for hats):

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

Walkways were clear and there really were very few people in the park...except at that Starbucks. I thought I got a picture but can't find one, but the line was out the door. Everyone was looking for a drink to warm them up I guess!!

We had fleece (including my fleece long underwear, which was barely keeping me warm) and hats and gloves, so we skipped the coffee and went straight to Africa.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

and the safari!! (my favorite favorite favorite!!)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

See? No crowds!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

I was afraid the animals might not be out in the cold, but we were in the front row where the heat was blowing on us, so I wasn't too sure I cared or not. But lucky for us, the animals WERE out...a lot of them too, and they were active!

Get ready for safari animal pictures!!

Hello, Hippo!

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

The alligator was even moving around. How often does that happen?? He was climbing out of the water:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/89161658@N04/

Most of the time the general conversation on the safari truck around the gators goes something like:

"Is it dead?!?"
"No, it's probably sleeping or something. I think I read they just lay really still."
"Well, I think it's fake like Jungle Cruise, I mean it's just laying the-"
"It's foot moved! It's alive! It's breathing!!"

So you can imagine how excited everyone was to watch it actually crawl out of the water.

Up next, giraffes (my fave!) and painted dogs:
