Oasis of the Seas : Paying For Stuff With Cash

We are leaving Sunday on our first Royal Caribbean cruise on Oasis. We are not giving our 13 year old son charging privileges. Are there any things on board that they don't accept cash for? Do they have a way to add cash to the Sea Card thing for his use? Thanks!

I think the only thing they accept cash for directly is in the casino. You can purchase arcade credits and load it to his card.

For what you’re proposing, I think you want to set him up basically as pre-paid with a set limit? If so, that’s not something I’ve attempted, but perhaps others have.

Yes, prepaid would work. I wonder if there is a gift card or something we could use?

Go to Guest Services when you board and you can set a limit. I believe you can set a per day or total cruise limit. I think you can also leave cash against his account but that wouldn't matter if the rest of you will be on a credit card.

This has never been possible for us on royal. And I’ve never heard of it actually happening. From Royal experience, charging is on or off.

No cash is accepted (other than gambling) directly. You put it on the account and then charge to the room.

And FYI even when you stop charging altogether on a kid’s card...they can stilll load up on arcade credits. This isn’t something they are inclined to stop no matter how many problems it causes.

I was with someone who did but it was a while ago so I confirmed on Cruise Critic and apparently you can do it.

The reference to cash was when you sign up for your original sea pass card. You can certainly do that - not everyone has a credit/debit card.

From RCI:

Q: How do I pay for onboard purchases?

A: All of Royal Caribbean International ships operate on a "cashless" system, meaning your boarding card, (also known as your SeaPass card), will be used as a charge card to make all onboard purchases. Normally to activate this SeaPass® account, most guests provide a credit card, (American Express, Optima, MasterCard, Visa, Discover and Diner's Club), to have these purchases charged to at the end of their cruise. Additionally, the SeaPass system may be activated with traveler's checks, debit cards with a Visa or MasterCard logo, or cash.

A running tab of all your purchases will be kept under separate folio numbers for each guest and an itemized statement left in your stateroom the night before disembarkation. If you provided a credit card and there are no discrepancies, the amount will be charged to your account on the morning of disembarkation. If you have used traveler's checks or cash to activate the account, you will need to settle the account at the Guest Relations desk, (to either receive a reimbursement of the unused amount you originally left or to pay the balance of what you have charged over the amount of what you originally left).

Please note:
We require guests to place a deposit if they are paying for their SeaPass account with cash. There is a $500 daily limit on cash accounts for 7+ night sailings and $300 for 2/3/4/5 night sailings. Once the daily cash limit is reached, we will call the guest and inform the guest that the limit has been reached.

Just like on shore give a bartender a nice cash tip with the first drink, the next ones will be stronger and you get more attention. Bartenders were my only need for cash.

We have had issues with the sea pass card and ROYAL. First, you can not "not allow charging" on a minors card online or at checkin. You must do it in person at the guest service desk (which means you have to wait in line). Then, there is NO way to disable the charging ability for the arcade, except to explain to your kid, if they use their card in the arcade, they will get to volunteer to help the crew remove gum from all the services it is stuck to on the ship, with their bare hands. I also believe during our last trip, it was on or mostly off with the above exception.

We were on the August 5th sailing of Oasis. Because our son had the refreshment beverage package we could not completely disable spending. We ended up going to guest services and giving him a $1 limit, which allowed the bars to ring up his mocktails.
