Following the thread if money was no object - Last night I was watching Island Hunters on HGTV. The episodes were about finding an island in the Florida Keys and Belize. Got me thinking could I live on a private island where you needed a boat to get to the main island. Could I do it? I don't think so - I would miss people and the thought of having to bring EVERYTHING over to the island.....not for me

What about you?

One of my son's classmates was on that show - his family bought an island (in Belize, I think?). Seems like a huge hassle in terms of building something on it, having to get everything shipped over on boats, etc. The dad was really big into fishing, so they wanted somewhere they could fish by a huge reef that was all theirs. I kept telling my son he needed to get himself an invite for vacation, but it never happened. :p

Oh wow.........They end up buying two islands one with a complete resort on it and one that they wanted to keep undeveloped. The couple spent $10 million dollars for the 2 islands. Mind blowing!!

Different episode, I think. They paid like $1 million, IIRC, not $10

Me and my mom drove from to the Key West this past March and we saw those homes on islands. Crazy! I could never do that, I'm not prepared enough to always have half and half creamer in the house. It would be a disaster. :rotfl2:

My best friend is rich. They have their main home which is 7,000 sq feet and looks like something out of Architectural Digest and a home in Florida and one in Colorado. Most of her time is spent dealing with issues related to the three homes. If a dishwasher breaks she can't just call the local repair guy. She has to call a specialist who lives in another city. Earlier this year, the roof leaked in her main house and it ruined the first-floor hardwood floors. It took months to find the right floors and to get the new floors laid and finished to look like the old ones she had to hire the same company that did the floors for the city symphony hall since they were the only ones who knew how to work on her floors. During that time they had to live in a hotel for weeks. If they want to change the lightbulbs in certain parts of the house, they have to hire a cherry picker. It sounds exhausting and makes me grateful for my easy to deal with generic home.

As for the island, I don't like living more than 10 minutes from a good grocery store and a Super Target.

^ Agreed, not having a grocery store close by would be a deal breaker for me. We are less than 1/2 mile from a Publix that i visit at least 5 times a week.. never buying more than $75 or so in groceries at one time..

I knew people who had to boat into their cottage in Ontario. Visited them there once. It seemed like a PIA. No thanks.
I would rather have a cottage on the regular shoreline.

I live in a semi rural area and have a hard enough time with the 20-30 minutes it takes me to get anywhere as it is! As for the island, I wouldn't mind owning one - Maybe for a vacation home to get away every now and then :)

I suspect when you have all the money in the world, you simply pay someone to take care of any Giant PIAs..

Exactly! You guys are still thinking too small. Anything you need, you have the maid & butler deal with it. :snooty:

One of the Rockefeller billionaires donated the island of St. John to the U.S. as a permanent wildlife preserve (& vacation spot.) Having that kind of money to do stuff like that would be wonderful.

There's an island very near me that'd be a great purchase, and it already has plenty of grocery stores and restaurants on it. It's called Manhattan. (Well, you said money would be no object!)

Sorry, our island isn't for sale. :snooty: We do have a nice bridge we can sell you. It's considered a landmark. So, it's an exceptional bargain. . . :teeth:
